Getting 5v power to Opti-Pac?
« on: September 09, 2002, 08:24:05 pm »
Just got my shiny new Opti-Pac (to go along with my shiny new Oscar Pro spinner), and I need to figure out how to get the 5v of power needed to it.
  • I don't have an I-Pac, so I can't get the power from there.
  • I'm using the PS/2 port for my trackball, so that's out.
  • Ultimarc.com says that it's possible to draw 5v from the joystick port but I'm not sure how

So what would be the best way to get a 5v lead up to this thing.  I could splice up a red/black from a PC power supply, but I'd kinda rather not if I could avoid it.  Maybe just buy a 5v DC adapter from Radio Shack and splice that up?

Thoughts?

If you have a spare power Y-splitter, you can do it like this:

This is a fairly straightforward way of getting either 5V or 12V (5V in your case) from your PC's power supply.

Take the 5V of the Pc Power supply. Its the RED cable...If you want 12V, then its the Yellow Cable, I'm assuming you already know what the BLACK cables are.

Yeah, I already thought about splicing off of a PC power supply.  I was just wondering if there's a better way of doing it.  Is there?

you don't need to splice it fromt he Power supply. Buy a Y adapter and use that, then plug it in to the power supply.

Hm...not bad.  I'll have to look into that a little more.
