BYO Rotary Joystick
« on: September 29, 2004, 04:18:02 am »
This should be posted on the news page as well, but for anyone who didn't see it, (or wants to respond to me but not through email) I will post it here.

I created a nice guide on how to build a rotary add-on for joysticks. See it here:
http://www.trimoor.com/rotary_joystick/index.htm

Feel free to post comments, complaints, suggestions, or death threats.

that is great!! ive toyed with the idea but couldnt quite imagine how i was going to go about it. i didnt realise there was that type of mouse around. was going to use an optical...one question though- why is there a block of wood in there? i'm guessing that's not an original joystick part  ;)

good one!!

(tiny critisism- i think the o-ring you refer to is usually called a grommet)

Excellent :)

I wonder if I could do it on my J-Stik...

I also wonder where to get such a mouse, although the rotary sensor may be similar to the non-optic type of device used in some scroll wheels (some revisions of Intellimouse).

im confused on how the twisting does anything.  Can you explain the mechanics of how it works?

It works by MAGIC, can't you see that?

Basically the nail piece prevents the rotary sensor from spinning with the handle.
When you turn the handle on the joystick, it turns the rotary sensor.

The microsoft mouse piece on the end of the tube is both the optic wheel and the encoder all in one little container.

Cool mouse for hacking!

But since the nail doesn't move when you move the joystick.  Doesnt' it rotate some when you move a direction?

I dont' think you would notice it in a 12way game.  But like in tron.  If you are in the spider scene... If you are pointing in a direction, and you move the joystick around, does it still point in the same direction?  It seems like it would move a little.

GREAT HACK!  Best rotary / joystick Ive seen!

Thats the part i misunderstood.  I was thinking the nail was some sort of grounding device or some such.  I get it.

Don't forget this BYO rotary joystick.

mr.Curmudgeon modifies a T-stick plus.   At the end of the thread, I use his method (with slight modification) to modify my P360.

I bought a bunch of used sticks off ebay, so I had to mix and match parts. I didn't have enough actuators, so I had to make one out of wood.

You're right. I couldn't think of the right name.

It does, but I'm pretty sure the Happ version does as well. I don't se how it could be made otherwise.

I got mine from a good will store, but you never know when one will turn up again.

This is a great hack!!! Congrats....why couldn't you have developed this sooner??   ;D  I can't tell you how many countless hours I spent racking my brain on this myself.

This is definitely very crafty. I wanted to go the store bought, low-modification route myself, since me and power tools don't work well together. But I wonder if this mod would work on the T-stik? It has some very unique issues that arise with the 4-to-8-way switching, but hmmmm.....maybe.

I do have one mechanical mouse left. It's ps/2 and can be adapted to serial.
Not sure if I'd sell it, but then again, if the right offer came along......

wow.. this is just too cool :)  does anybody think that maybe an electronics supplier like mouser might have a substitute for that rotary encoder?  I doubt they were only made by Microsoft.. but who knows...   I'm gonna search around for something. I'll let you guys know...
