Can anybody give me a quick guide to changing the Windows 98 bootscreen i.e. filename, picture resolution+depth etc.??

the files you to play with are LOGO,.SYS, LOGOS.SYS, LOGOW.SYS. You can edit them using paint and prety much stay the same size (W/H).

The easy way look for a program called 1st250.zip I have used it on lots of win98 machines and it works great.
