Why exactly is that one for the scrap pile?  Am I missing something?

It looks like a cab in ok shape that needs some T-molding and a little touching up.  If anything it may need some woodwork to sure up the cabinet if anything is loose... then you have a really nice looking retro-style cabinet.

Plus it comes with a working monitor and is at a penny right now.  Ok, the monitor has burn in, but in the least perhaps it could be used for parts.  Or if the burn in isn't that bad, maybe some smoked plexi could hide it pretty well.

I'm sorry, I just don't see how that is scrap, unless I am totally missing something

it looks like a Frogger but it been converted to a different game at one point. The screen is Horizontally mounted and frogger was a Vertical game. But the cab looks restorable.

It's a good example of why NOT to use MDF on your cab though.
Look at almost ANY Space Invaders Deluxe cab you see, and compare condition to that Frogger cab.
That's why I chose plywood for my cab.

I wish it were closer, I have a working Frogger PCB, CP, marquee, bezel and sideart waiting for a cab like that to install it in.

Why?  So in 22 years your Mame cabinet will still be in good shape?? ha!

You are missing that ChadTower makes a habit of posting how he can take semi-decent working cabs like, Centipede, Double Dragon, and now this Frogger, slap a SlikStik control panel on it, and sell it to some poor sot for $3,000 becuase it now plays 6,000 gamez.

Ahhhh, I never took the time to see/remember the name of who that actually was.  Now it all makes sense.

I guess I'm just used to building things to last.

A friend of mine has a beautiful buffet in his dining room that was built by his grandfather.
My nephew has the toy chest that his GREAT-GREAT grandfather built for his GREAT grandfather.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to tear my cabinet apart--even with a sledgehammer.
Is it overkill? Probably.
But it will NOT come apart by itself.

Actually IIRC Frogger is a particle board cabinet, not an MDF one.  Particle board breaks a whole heck of a lot easier on edges than MDF does.  Yes, plywood would be best, but also I've found on classic cabinets (like Midways) that the plywood ends up delaminating the fine outer surface around the edges very easliy--all with no impact to the cabinet.

To each their own.. but I'll build my cabinets out of oak laminated MDF so I have real stainable oak hardwood outside (no cheap fake woodgrain) and solid cores.  Plywood is acceptable if you want ~25% less weight. The only thing I'll ever use particle board for is the bottom board or shelving.

Oh and back to the OP... I see nothing unrepairable with only a small amount of materials here.  A little putty/bondo, new tmolding, a new coin door, control panel and monitor bezel and you've got a great looking machine again.

There have been much much worse things listed on ebay as "mint" or "like new"... trust me.

Oh man, I was starting to get a bit pissed there before I saw the confusion clear up.  Heh.

Basically, if you look at the bottom of that cab, it looks like the MDF is coming apart.  If the MDF is that bad, the guy is claiming its a Frogger cab with no visible evidence... I'm betting the monitor isn't described properly and that the seams on the cab itself are probably crappy too.  IMO, only the monitor for that thing is worth anything at all and I don't believe his description based on the visual evidence and auction title.

That's why I say it's junk.

Of course, my MDF cab may not last 22 years but I plan on having more by then

Well . . .  Frogger cabinets had a very distinctive shape, which that cab matches, the seller says the monitor came from a Perfect Billiards conversion, and he's only asking 0.01 for it.  Not something I'd buy, but I think it's a fair auction.

This *IS HIGHLY LIKELY* a frogger cab.

As the other poster said, Frogger is a distinctive cabinet. Dont let the monitor orientation fool you.

There were only a handful of Sega/Gremlin cabs that matched this profile:
- Frogger
- Astroblaster
- Carnival
- Space Fire Bird
- Pulsar
- Digger
- Invincio
- HeadOn
- HeadOn2
- DeepScan
- Depthcharge
- Blockade
- Moon Cresta
- Probably a couple other lesser known games as well.

Of which, Frogger, Astroblaster, Space Firebird, Moon Cresta and Blockade had woodgrained sides, the rest were plain white.

Since of that list only Frogger was made in any large numbers and likely to still be around,  there's pretty good money on it being a Frogger.  Also there may be keys inside as to it being a frogger like a certain power board or wiring or something, or perhaps the Sega/Gremlin sticker stating what it was.

Again, the cabinet is FAR from being garbage.  It could be easily fixed to make a nice Frogger (or other Sega game) or converted into Mame for those that like to do that.

It could be Frogger but it could just as easily also be Astro Blaster, Time Pilot and any number of other Sega/Gremlin games that used that exact same cab.

As well, there are alot of generic cabinets out there that look EXACLTY like this, except the top corner is a little more rounded (or is it less rounded?) and the fake wood is darker. I have one of these. I could easily turn it into a Frogger and pass it off as original. The only giveaway would be those two things I just mentioned.

A little bit of wood putty, sanding, paint, and screws that cabient would be a good working cabinet again.

Okay, it's good to learn.  I am learning.

What do you do with the flaking corners and edge pieces, then?  That's my biggest issue with the cab itself.  I've been under the impression that's not repairable.

Wood putty.  You take wood putty, fill in those areas, like you do bondo on a car.  Use a straight edge to smooth it out.  Once hard and dry sand it.

I'd buy that cabinet... and use it as an outhouse!!! :P  No, seriously though since this cab has no artwork on it I'd rather build one from scratch then go through the trouble of patching up and trying to make this one sturdy again.... but that's just my opinion and hey this guy is only asking a penny for the thing.  So if you have someone who is ambitious enough this might be a treasure to them.

Mr Dude, that's how those cabinet are, the wood grain look.  Frogger only had a unique marquee, bezel, and control panel art.  so this is definately worth restoring if you can find the rest of the parts :)

Alot of them DID have sideart.

This Time Pilot cabinet is a good example.

The ones I've seen without sideart are the ones that somebody converted to "insert name of stupid game here", and then ripped the sideart OFF of the cabinet, so that people wouldn't be disappointed when they came all the way across the room to play a GOOD game based on the sideart.

I've bought from him before actually, I got my soul edge cab from there.

He knows his stuff, and I'm sure it WAS a frogger cabinet. But I'm also surprised he didn't just strip it and chuck the cab.

Yep, I've seen pics of Frogger's with sideart, but they're unusual.
