Games for wife to play?
« on: May 27, 2004, 01:12:58 pm »
Beyond the classics like Centipede or Ms. Pac-man, what can I introduce the wife too to keep her interested in the mame cab?

I've shown her tetris of course, and puzzle bobble.  She found and loves timber (Why I can't guess, but hey if she loves it....) and she played burgertime II all the way to the end I think.

what other games do the wives/girlfriends like?

Edit:  anyone play Zuma Deluxe on a cab? (I guess with trackball?)  Wife loves that game!

thanks,

My wife loves a game called Toki.  We used to play it all the time in the arcades around here.

Basically it's a platform game with a monkey spitting(shooting) his way through to save the princess.  It's kinda difficult though but we've spent a ton of time playing it.  Check it out if she likes platformers like Super Mario or Spyro. (Other of my Wife's Favorites.) ;D

Puzzle Bobble is a definate favorite of my Wife's too.  She also likes Capcom Bowling (if you have a track ball) and she loves Pretty Soldier Sailor moon (cause she looks like Sailor Jupiter).

Hmm.. I guess Gals Panic is out of the question. ^_^

Any puzzle/level/shooter game is always a good way to start.

This is a great thread for me becuase I'm just starting to build my cabinet and i need to get my wife to like it quickly or she'll endlessly complain about it!!!!
Back in tha day, Dig-Dug was very popular with the ladies because of the cute characters and the non-violent (well except for filling animals full of air and bursting them  ;) theme, Also Paperboy was non-violent, but not sure how to use on MAME since you don't have the handlebar controller. My other thoughts are Popeye, Galaga, Asteroids, Mr. Do, Space Invaders.
MAME me!

Around here its frogger, ms-pacman, gauntlet (although don't take the treasure all the time or they'll get surly ;) and Super mario land.  Usually any two player game that I'm willing to coach her on is fun too since we can both play at the same time which she likes.

As far as playing the cab, forget it, not a single game. She was not around the Arcades when she was younger. She was a nerd just SCHOOL SCHOOL SCHOOL, what a nerd  ;D

At my own personal arcade parties I have found the following games to be most popular with girls.

Out Run
Tetris
Uo Poko
Kangaroo
Frogger
Ms. Pac-Man

You might also want to note that I had dedicated Out Run and Kangaroo machines in the gameroom at the time, thus those titles made the list, while they likely would not have made the list on an all purpose mame machine.

I have also found that little girls (under 12 or so), really like Time Pilot and Jack the Giantkiller (or they might have just liked them because they were cocktails, I don't know, but girl children in general seem to ignore the uprights and gravitate towards the cocktails.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Her favorite game is my Mad Planets.  She got pretty upset with me when I mentioned that I was going to sell that cab, but I was just joking around with her.  Other than the "standard" girl games like Ms. Pac, Centipede, and Frogger, she also really likes Tapper and Bubbles.  Bubbles is pretty fun, but you have to have a joystick with some resistance to it to play it correctly; Wico's are the best, but you can also play it pretty decent with a P360.  Forget about playing it with a Super or other light joystick, it just doesn't play right.

For my wife:

Galaga (until we played doubles and I played for 30 min. on one quarter, doubling my personal best high score in one setting.  She hasn't touched it since.)

Money Idol Exchanger

Flicky (obvious "chick" appeal to that one.  Ha!  I'm so funny!)  :D

Super Mario Bros.

Dig Dug

As far as classic games, my girlfriend really likes Venture and Ladybug.

In modern games, she likes the Mortal Kombat series.
She's nasty with Baraka and Cyrax.
Don't assume just because she's a girl that she won't enjoy kicking your ass in a good fighting game.  Get her a move list and let her practice on you.  You know what they say about a woman's memory.  They're amazingly good at memorizing fatalities.

Oh, and she likes the PuzzleBobble/Bust-a-Move games too.

Sometimes, I can talk her into Smash TV because we can play simultaneously and it's a lot more fun that way.

my missus likes: PANG

Although she prefers a bottle of wind and watching Friends......

MORE CAB PLAYING TIME FOR ME!!!!! nothing worse than trying to shift a woman off the cab to play for yourself...... they seem reluctant to get into it at first - but once hooked...... YOUR cab becomes OUR cab.....be afraid!

Umm, I guess it depends on age, eh? I know women in their late 20's like Street Fighter II (they play with Chun Li).

As for the original poster's question about ZUMA Deluxe, it's funny but I thought the same thing. It would be great to play in a MAME cab. But it doesn't work with a Spinner (which would be the ideal controller for that game).

BTW you DID know that Zuma is a rip-off of an early 90's arcade game right? I can't for the life of me remember the name of it, but it played just like Zuma, with a spinner.

NO MORE!!

The only game my wife will play on her own is Centipede.  Her favorite two-player game is Marvel Superheroes but she gets in a serious snit if she's not allowed to play as The Hulk.

Great thread ;) Im just getting started with my cab, and it will be nice if the wife can enjoy some games as well. I know that she likes Bubble bobble, especially if we both play, and she enjoys Trog as well.

Again, better when we are both playing together.

My wife thought that MAME was a stupid idea  :o

Then I introduced her to Bubble Bobble and now she's right into it.

For some odd reason, she is constantly playing Super Mini Gem Fighter (a cute version of street fighter)  ::)

Guess it's not so stupid now........
The internet, hey... so they have that on computer's now???

Seem to be noticing a definite pattern here!   ;)

My missus likes to play :

- Galaga (she preferred the fast shoot variant that was in Mame up until recently...now I have to enable the cheat for her, which means her scores aren't saved....time to look at adding it back in the source!)
- Frogger
- Puzzle Bobble (all of them, but mainly 4)
- Trackball games (World Class Bowling, Shuffleshot & Shuuz)
- Beatmania (I set it up so half the controls are my side, half are on hers....makes it way easier to only have to remember 3 buttons, and can be a hell of a lot of fun!)

The wifey definately likes to play Puzzle Bobble. We mainly play it head to head (and I whomp on her every time). We've also enjoyed playing Marble Madness head to head.
Other games that she'll play by herself:
Q-bert
Ms Pacman
Puyo Puyo (if you ever had a Sega Genesis, it's the same thing as Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine)

I wish they hadn't removed that version either.

Easier options - it was removed in 0.79u1.  Just install an older MAME that had it and make a shortcut to it and add the shortcut into your front end.

Aside from the classics, my lady likes:

all the puzzle bobbles, buster bros (pang), quiz and dragons, marble madness, tetris, puzzle de pon, stuff like that.

There is another one that I can't remember the name of...it's a Neo Geo game that used a trackball and you got shocked if the puck touched the sides of the walls in the maze...
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a woman!

Do you mean "The Irritating Maze"?  Talk about a game that lives up to its moniker!  Actually looks pretty fun, but I'm lousy at it.
