Best Game I've Never Played?
« on: April 10, 2004, 07:54:35 pm »
What is the best game, that odds are good, I've never played. A rare find that many do not know about, but is your little treasure? Your favorite game that others often miss? Mine would be twin tigers, a fun game that reminds me of my youth. Whats yours?

One game that I find to be pretty cool is Asterix.  In most ways it's your every day side-scrolling beat em up, but it's pretty funny.

For something that's out of the box, and something completly different... you should try Cameltry.  I have no idea what it has to do with camels, but it's a good game none the less.  I'd suggest a spinner for it though.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Some of MY favorites that I have rarely seen are "Neo Drift Out" ( a fun driving game), "Waku Waku" (a strange fighting game), and anything in the "Pang!" series (even those I have seen these games plenty, people forget them).

Have you played these games? "Rival Schools" is another fighting game that I find enjoyable, but I do not think it is that rare.

Cameltry.

It's a maze game where you control a ball inside the maze by rotating the entire maze around the ball with your spinner.

Good thread! Seen some nice suggestions.

A game that I found pretty simple yet addictive is Puzz Loop. Shoot colored balls to form at least 3 in a row. Bejeweled is also a bit similar to this.

BTW, for me Metal Slug and Smash TV were games I had never heard of (before I started using Mame) either. But then I'm more of a pre 90's player.

I've been taking a liking to Krull lately.  Dual joystick game like Robotron and Splat!.  Different missions per level, reminds me a little of Tron in some weird way.  It's not a game I would own, but fun to play on occasion.

I second that.  It's a cool game.

I like a game called Shadow Land.  It's the kind of arcade game I could picture sitting under a dim, yellow lamp in the smoky back corner of a China-town restaurant.  You probably haven't played it.

The Glob.

It's a 2d arcade game where you're trying to collect various fruits (or whatever) by avoiding enemies by using your glob powers to stick to the ceiling when they come close to you.

I stumbled on it once, thought it was cheezy, laughed at it, then ended up playing it for like 3 hours.

Go figure?

I'd have to say B. Rap Boys!  It's the sequal to DJ Boy and it's never been emulated (unfortunately :() due to a complex sound system.  This game is hilarious though and really fun to play.

I know I could find out if I looked, but has DJ Boy been emulated anywhere?  I remember that game so well and Wolfman Jack came to a car show in my hometown at the same time that game was in the local arcade so all of the kids thought it was especially cool.

Cameltry is a really great game.  I'd recommend it as well.

though, for the "best game" i'd have to say Super Puzzle Fighter.  I had never even heard of this game before i built my cabinet, but now it gets more play than most of my other games combined.  Uo Poko is another one that most Americans have never heard of, but that's addictingly fun.

its an odd game but i find it fun. it has elements of some old school games like donkey kong, pac-man and dig-dug. after about the 4th level you get to beat up micheal jackson.

Asteroids.

There really was no other game made that had the simple appeal of blowing stuff up like asteroids.  It was the first video game I ever put a quarter in.

After I built mame cabs, the only one I play really is Asteroids.

How can we set up an easier way to let everybody rate games as they play them (or when they finish) and upload them to the internet. Then, the frontends can download the data as another items do sort by.

Also, the frontends should let you (and your friends) rate your own games so you can then sort by that (I guess you can use the # of times played feature, but that's a bit different).

Logic Pro 1 and 2. Even though it's in Japanese it's a very additive game. Sort of along the lines of Mario Picross if anyone remembers that Gameboy game or an upgraded Mindsweeper. I'll explain it if you want to give it a shot.

A grid is set up with a picture underneath. Along the rows there are a set of numbers which tell you the continually of the picture. Example 345 this means somewhere within the row there are 3 spots within that row that you must figure out . A total number of 12 "pixels" should be applied but only with gaps between. In other words:

XXXXXX   XXXXX    X     XX

            ^3         ^4    ^5  Pixels(in above XXXX diagram)

Every time you get in wrong you lose time. A few powerups help you clear more area. Eventually a picture will form and you can work yourself around the grid better because it sort of like a crossword puzzle. I love these games and spend hours on them. Turn the timer down in the options or DIP switch area for better gameplay (less frantic). Interesting enough these are 2 of the 5 games I can finish with one quarter. The other 3 being (B lack Tiger, Ghoul's n Ghost's, and Ghost's n Goblin's)

Cybattler
http://www.classicgaming.com/rotw/cybattler/  my review I did in 2001, and the rom link doesn't work so don't worry about a rom link, cause it don't work!

Guwange, Donpachi, Dodonpachi, G.Darius, any Darius game for that matter, Giga Wing 2, Mars Matrix, Black Tiger - arcade

Metal Storm, River City Ransom, Sprint - NES   (YOU MUST PLAY METAL STORM)

Powerball, Beyond Oasis, Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hard Corps, Musha - Genesis

lots of gameboy advance games you need to play, including Metroid Zero Mission and Casltevania Aria of Sorrow.  The new River City Ransom EX also kicks ass.

so many games, so few time!

Major Havoc. The humor kills me.

Also that train game from the 80s where you move the track around on the screen.

"rescue"  is pretty wild.   Dual controls - simular to robotron.

Rally Bike - nice top view racer... with some cool suprises

Assault - best tank game ever

ninja princess - nice game with cool changes at higher levels

 two tigers
 mad planets

A game i've been playin lately is Pipedream.  it's a great fast thinking puzzle game.

For something that's out of the box, and something completly different... you should try Cameltry.  I have no idea what it has to do with camels, but it's a good game none the less.  I'd suggest a spinner for it though.

that is the only game ever that gives me motion sickness.  it just screws with my head ???

My friends and I stumbled across that game one night. Man it got pretty crazy after that. lol, we had a lot of fun.

Hmm,  was watching 'The Last Starfighter'  tonight on HBO.

I noticed a line in the movie where Centari said that he 'designed and built the game'

Which made me think...  Centari = Centuri  ?  Heh   Maybe a even combination of centuri and atari?  heh

So I fired up mame and looked under Centuri's games for kicks.  I noticed a game that I had never played:

 "Aztarac"

  An interesting Vector game.

I tried to work it... but couldnt get the controls.   Did a few searches, and found some california extreme control panel pics.   It used a tron style joystick - but looks to use an optical interface.  Basically,  and analog stick that didnt seem to use a centering mechanism.  The other control was a spinner... and a few buttons.

Even after finding out what controls the game used... it was tricky to make the mame32 varient assign the correct values.   I had to keep trying the same things over and over untill it liked me : )   Finally, I got to play : )

Use an analog stick or analog gamepad control to move your ship (you may have to reverse some of the axis as well).   You use the mouse/spinner to aim your laser turret.

You must protect 4 bases from enemy crashes.   Once you clear enough enemies.. you can move into the center of the bases to warp to another level.

The game is trippy - esp the title screen.  Looks pretty cool... but I couldnt play it too well, as I was trying to use a mouse as the spinner... and the game moves way to fast for that! : )

Ohh, and one other interestic thing... its front plexi that sits over the monitor - was a half dome (convex - pointed twords you).   That must have made the thing look even more trippy.

I'll have to check it out again to be sure (I was young), but I had some great times when I rented Home Alone for the NES. You picked up traps and laid them as you ran around the house as the 2 burglars chased you. Think of it as a G-rated Tecmo's Deception

What is the best game, that odds are good, I've never played. A rare find that many do not know about, but is your little treasure? Your favorite game that others often miss? Mine would be twin tigers, a fun game that reminds me of my youth. Whats yours?

No doubt about it, Reactor.  Never had seen it in an arcade and it is just an amazing game.

I've been taking a liking to Krull lately.  Dual joystick game like Robotron and Splat!.  Different missions per level, reminds me a little of Tron in some weird way.  It's not a game I would own, but fun to play on occasion.

I'd have to 2nd this one.  The arcade I grew up near had this game and I would play it all the time.  If I remember correctly the 2 joysticks were bat handles.  I think the sound effects are great too.

For me, its all the newer games.

I was a video kid croney.  I played almost all of the classics in the arcade.  So none of them hit the "Best game I've Never Played".

BUT...  I stopped playing after college.  And I always heard that the arcade scene died out... I assumed that ment games too.

So my votes are all of the amazing and fun vertical shooters.

19xx
Tomato one (captain tomato?)
ALL the psikyos!

These are all the ones that really shine when playing with a real joystick and buttons also.

Oh yeah... and ALL the amazing PRoN games out there!  I guess my local arcade growing up wheren't filled (or more like owned) by pervs like me :)

And for others

Puzzle Loop  <-- GREAT GAME
Gals Panic     <-- Great additions to quix.  Plus a little show and tell

Growl!

It's a game where you're a like an animal rights activist cowboy who goes around ripping poachers apart--like literally ripping them apart.

Play through to the end to find out who was behind the "evils of animal poaching."

I play Cavelon quite a bit. It's very difficult though, yet very simplistic..... just collect all the door parts to escape to the next level. I haven't got past level 3 yet!

I played this game on my ZX Spectrum back in the 80s and I wasn't aware that it was a straight coin-op conversion. But I have to say that the Speccy version was very, very good as the the coin-op itself only differs by having better graphics.

Another good game is Go Go Mile Smile which is more of a maze/snake game thingy. :)

What controls is Uo Poko supposed to use? Just the one button?

For YEARS I thought Uo Poko only used the Start Buttons and down on the joystick. Then I bought a real board and discovered that service mode recognized all joystick directions and all 3 buttons, but the game was still just "down".

That was until about 6 months ago when I was playing Uo Poko (real board, not Mame), and a friend of mine did something I had never seen before, he rolled the joystick around from down to up and was able to adjust the chain back upwards.

I had been playing for years and I had no idea you could do that.

Also, from what I have seen, all recent Japanese jamma boards recognize all the standard Jamma inputs in test mode, even if the game doesn't use them all, Magical Tetris does this, as does Mr. Driller 2 and the aforementioned Uo Poko).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Obscure Old Arcade Games. . .
« Reply #82 on: February 09, 2008, 02:26:10 pm »
i used to spend hours on lunar lander......yet im still not sure why

First time I ever went into an arcade, there was a Lunar Lander machine.  I remember it being really difficult and frustrating to play.  Other obscure games I played there included:  Tailgunner, Radarscope and Blasto.

I remember that I liked Blasto, somewhat inexplicably.  I was hugely impressed by the sit-down Tailgunner machine, though I never really figured out how to play it properly.  (In fact, I'm still not sure.)

One of my favorite almost-unknown games is Zektor.  Apparently it's quite rare, very few of them were produced.  I've never seen a real one, but I think it's a lot of fun.

I was introduced to Lady Bug and Cosmic Avenger through my ColecoVision.  Cosmic Avenger was a huge favorite of mine on the CV.  I only saw an actual Cosmic Avenger machine once, briefly, and didn't get a chance to play it.  It's probably just as well. . .   I've learned it was a lot harder than the CV version.

Addendum. . .  I almost forgot to mention Quasar.  Our local convenience store had a Quasar machine for several weeks, and I liked it pretty well.  I was frustrated that it took so long to bring that game to MAME, it's fairly obscure.

Snow Bros. - Nick & Tom
great arcade game
well if you play it under the right conditions.
the origonal was well designed with addictive  game play and menacing bosses but had a weak chipset that slowed the game down and made movement "chunky"
the sequel fixed the clunky movement but added as well 3 other unbalanced characters and a hilariously bad storyline.
The best version is actually a port of the first one for the genesis. It has the superior design of the first one and the improved controls of the second.
really the only thing lacking in the gen version is the controller.
Put the gen version in a mame arcade and you have snowball tossing perfection!

Oh, I forgot to mention Space Dungeon.

I had an Atari 800XL computer and I downloaded a lot of cracked games from BBS systems.  On my 1200 baud modem.  One that I got was Space Dungeon.  Now, I'm pretty sure Space Dungeon was never released for Atari computers.  What happened is that it came out on cartridge for the Atari 5200, which was basically just an Atari 400 computer with the keyboard taken off and those crummy analog joysticks added.  So, somebody had dumped the Space Dungeon ROM to disk and hacked it to work (much better, I'm sure) with digital joysticks on the Atari 400/800/XL computers.  And it was fantastically fun!  The crazy thing is, I didn't learn until years later that it was a port from an arcade game.  I'd never heard of Space Dungeon, never seen one.

Jr. Pac-man was a similar story.  It was never released for Atari computers, but it came out for the Atari 5200.  I'm sure it must have been brutally frustrating to play with the 5200 controllers, but the hacked version was terrific on my 800XL.  It might have been the best of all the Pacman series, though though difficulty level was pretty high and might have turned people off from it.  Anyhow, I never saw an actual Jr. Pac-man arcade game.

SpeedCoin

this is the lowest tech, 8bit graphics with one of the best most addicting gameplay schemes in my opinion. just a blast to play.

i'm also a huge fan of shuuz, and galz panic. very nostalgic fun

I was at a retro gaming party over the summer and a friend of mine introduced me to the Puyo Puyo series.  I've been playing it ever since!

This thread RULES!  I've been too busy playing all of these great suggestions to chime in -- but for the record, "BULL FIGHT" -- Sega/Bally Midway it's the shnizzle!!!  You're a MATADOR.  You have a cape and a sword -- what more do you NEED??

My bud from Atlanta was going through "obscure" titles, and found this one -- got me hooked in no time and we've been competing across state borders forever.  Seriously, play a couple times -- you're hooked!
