Here is my first spinner mouse hack attemp...
This is based on the HARD DRIVE hack.
The Bearing is from an IDE Hard Drive (WD I think)

The Arkanoid top is not included....I just put it in for viewing pleasure.

This is a PS2 connection but you can use the ps2 to serial converter. Also, you easily dis-assemble this to incorporate your own mouse hack. It does not SPIN for 3 minutes  ;)
(if you know what I mean).

Anyway here are some pics....

OK.. here is a small write up..

What you need.
Hard Drive Spinner (spindle) and disk.
"L" Bracket metal (Dollar Store)
Those Motherboard Silver screw mounts.
Mouse
Epoxsy (Glue, Crazy Glue etc...)

This is the pics...Notice the HD DISK, I cut it to make that shape.

Then I took MB mount  glue the mouse wheel and underneath the SPINNDEL I screw in the MB Mount.
And drilled 4 holes along the sides.

Then for the the upper part, I made it 3 or more  size adjustable. All you need is more silver MB mounts.

Use none or 1  if mounting to METAL, 1 or 2 for 1/2, 2 or 3 or more for 3/4 MDF.

for the top piece, you need something to screw that piece in the MB Mount so you screw the TOP on that. I had to look around for this.
Now whats left is just to glue the "L" and then the mouse part to this "L". The bottom part is really not adjustable.

Here is another pic with the TORNADO TOP installed...

First one without any Silver MB Mount.
Second one with one silver MB mount.
Third 2 Silver MB mount.

You really should re-post this write up over in the main forum. This is a really clever little gadget. I'm sure there are a lot of folks here who would like to have the functionality of a spinner but don't want to drop 90 bucks on a real one. Heck I've already got a Tornado, but I might might make one of these anyway just because it looks like a fun project.

;D  EXCELLENT !!! Thanks for the write-up.. That REALLY helps me...  Just on quick questions, is there a hard drive that works better than another.  I took one MAXTOR 500 mg apart and found it wouldn't work right... please point me to the golden drive... HAHA ! thanks.

Also, and idea what that top piece that the Tornado Top is attached to is called.... thanks again.

I am doing a full write up.
I have found a way to make that shaft, so no need looking around for something that will work. We can now make it.

I'm putting it in the Project Announcements...

Very ingenious!  Now, if you could make one the pushes down to activate a microswitch, I'd order a truckload  ;D!  Oscar Controls wants $99.99 for his version!

No offense, but the pictures you take are extremely out of focus.  Check your camera for a "close up" setting.  My auto-focus Olympus has a flower icon that indicates when you are focussing on something less than 2 feet away.  I toggle it on and off when necessary.

Thanks again for the great idea!

I am building more of this and now I'm building a "Quick Bunny Spinner Top" for it. Check the pics in the Project announcement. Put those SERIAL PORT to use, don't waste them  ;D
