3D Printable Atari Volcano buttons
« on: February 17, 2023, 09:56:34 pm »
Using OpenSCAD, so you can pick any CP thickness, any button height/width, lit with 3mm led, and uses standard microswitches: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5856985
Can select compatibility with standard button wrench or a simpler basic design.
Time to re-do all my control panels!

Slicer tells me this is about $0.30 worth of PLA for one - add cost of microswitch and LED, could make at least 15 of these for the price of a repo, and not have to worry about how to fit it to your CP  ;D

Most of the libraries around me print for free, so you save that $0.30 as well.

So I paid $40 for the pair haha

They don't ship directly to Canada, so hard to say what the total cost would be for me.

I just printed some cones at 0.08mm layer height and they look fantastic.  4 for ~$0.15

Can the printed button be sanded and painted to look like metal?  3D prints always have that rough look to me.

Yes, sanding and painting are options.  I don't think the latest prints I did at 0.08mm layer height would benefit much, unless you would want a more metallic sheen.  You're right that 3D prints typically look rough.  I understand that resin printers are much better but have no direct experience with those.  I've attached a pic here of my latest cone prints - not the usual rough look.  Could apply some metallic paint perhaps.  The push-button part is a little bit rough - I'm going to experiment with that, 100% infill, 0.08mm layers, etc, see how good I can get them.

The texture seems like an easy fix.   Put the button in a lathe or drill press and hold some sandpaper to it.   Fantastic job.

I think I'm good with the look tbh, but to each their own.  Had considered applying a metallic glossy paint or something, but... happy with it the way it is, with no sanding, painting,....  Would really need a bright light and close examination before suspecting anything but mass produced.

Wow.  It really looks great.  No touch up needed and if someone was looking for blemishes they would still have a hard time finding any.

That does look good. I am like Javery - I paid a good deal for my Tempest cabinet. I would've been happier with those.

sweet cab - love tempest, it's the primary reason I got a spinner.

You've inspired me - in order to attach the cone to a drill, per:

The texture seems like an easy fix.   Put the button in a lathe or drill press and hold some sandpaper to it.   Fantastic job.

I've modelled a  shank attachment - screw on the cone and you're good to go:

(default is a quarter inch hex, but is customizable - thingiverse updated)

If the lazies don't win, I'll see about getting the cones to have that metallic appearance.

3D printing is the best friend of cabinet builders.
You can even print your items with resin, the results are fantastic! :)

Easier to add 'ironing' in Cura and let the printer do the smoothing for you 🙂

I downloaded this sleeve and printed it.

I have an Assault cab that some jackhole mutilated.

He cut a larger hole for P1 start and put a regular P1 start button in there.

I have the volcano shell that I need and a friend has the button. I am going to pick that up today.

I will send a pic when I put it all together.

It will at least let me use the correct button until I can buy some metal and fabricate a new CP for the cab.

Thanks.

Let me know if you need tweaks to the design to support a real volcano button and metal panel, as it was designed for the 3D printed parts with a thicker wood panel in mind

I could probably print these in resin for people who need them. Really need to justify the expense of the printer to my wife.
