Bouncing Babies (Old DOS Game)
« on: August 09, 2020, 07:23:55 pm »
Can download here (game is freeware)
https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/file/bouncing-babies/bbabies/

Can anyone help me try to find out how to change the controls from the default 123 into any Alphabet letter character A-Z)?
Also the Spacebar to ENTER and the ESC to ESCAPE 2 times (Right now, when you press ESC, another screen comes up and press ESC again to exit to DOS)

This is probably easy for someone who is great in programming (like Howard).

Hoping someone can help.

Thanks

PS: Don't Laugh, I like the game (simple but addictive). It brings back a lot of memory from the 80's and I put it on my Cabinet (but need the controls changed).

Thanks (crossing fingers someone could help).

found this guide on how to remap keys in DOSBOX.

https://classicreload.com/help/remapping-keys-in-dosbox.html

it might help since i'm betting you are not going to try and run this on freedos.

---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- that would require some kind of TSR then.  I don't think I can help with that one... before my time.... barely.

I LOVED this game.
very
I even had a handheld of it.  --  But god remapping a DOS game's keys would be...... probably not worth the effort to be honest. :-/

howard's right, you'd need some kind of a driver or TSR -- multitasking / dos did not really mix -- so a loader/trainer that launched another process would be very very difficult to pull off.

I found where the 123  keys are. Now I can cgange it to anything I need.

Now to Find the SPACEBAR and change it to Return and ESC to Exit to DOS (skipping the second ESC). Crossing fingers.

Arcade Game in Mame is called Wall Street

:update

Found out the SPACEBAR I'm gonna change it to 1 as START Player "1" instead of Enter (Changing the Message in the Start Screen that's easy to change.
Instead of saying "Space Bar to Start" cahge it to Player 1 to Start (something like that.

Only one left..... that ESC just need to press it once (skip the second) and back to DOS (FE).

Arcade Game in Mame is called Wall Street
In addition to Wall Street, there's the spinner game Plump Pop, 1987, Taito.
- Video doesn't show using button 1 to jump to boost the bounce.   :dunno

There's also the vertical scroller dual-joystick game Angel Kids, 1988, Sega.

Yeah, Wall Street was the one I was thinking of.  Definitely played bouncing babies, though.

Sounds like you got a way forward, but wouldn't an option be reprogramming an iPac to set buttons to 1, 2, 3?

14 years ago "Nasty Spinner" was born... Holy Moly, time flies.  :banghead:

Any, The game is installed in my cabinet, I can't keep reprogramming the IPAC for any game that requires a certain layout. Don't know how long the IPAC will last if I do that.

It is easier to Hack/Change the control of a game once you find it. I have done this this to several PURE DOS games and some were easy.

Right now, this Bouncing Babies is keeping me busy with the ESC. I have ESC in my panel but I just wanted to cahnge the game so I don't have to push ESC twice.

Once to EXIT the game, then another message come up and waits for you to push ESC again. I wanna JMP that section if I find it.

Maybe Some GREAT programmers like Howard or Haze probably can do this with their eyes closed, but for me, I need more than 2 or should i say 4 eyes :) and all have to be open.

In DOS I'd be doing exactly what you are doing.  The only (easy) way is to find the keycodes in the program and hex edit them to what you want.  Unfortunately hacking is still hacking regardless of the skill level.  Patience and persistence is the only thing that gets it done.

Heh I actually built one of those spinners.  It was so long ago I forgot you did it.

I miss those days.  I made some awful spinner with a threaded rod that had a drawer handle on it and it spun in front of an optical mouse sensor.  Honestly worked as well as my actual Arkanoid spinner.
