All Killer, No Filler Gamelists Part 8 - CLASSICS
« on: March 19, 2016, 11:36:29 pm »
Directory of "All Killer, No Filler Gamelists"

JUST BECAUSE A GAME IS IN THIS LIST DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WORKING 100% CORRECTLY IN MAME.
LOTS OF GREAT GAMES ARE PERFECTLY PLAYABLE, BUT HAVE SMALL SOUND OR GRAPHICS ISSUES CAUSING THEM TO BE LISTED AS NOT PERFECTLY EMULATED IN MAME.
DO NOT USE A NO-NAG VERSION OF MAME AND THEN COMPLAIN TO MAME DEVS AFTER YOU'VE REMOVED THE GIANT RED BOX THEY PUT THERE TO INFORM YOU THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE GAME.  IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO ASK ABOUT AN ISSUE, ALWAYS TEST WITH THE UNADULTERATED OFFICIAL MAME BUILD FIRST.

OK, Calling this one done for now.  No CHD's required, but some sound samples and artwork files are.

Sound Samples which can be found here: http://samples.mameworld.info/ are needed for the following games:
Astro Blaster
Buck Rogers
Carnival
Space Panic
Vanguard
Zaxxon
There are samples available for some of the other games on the list, but I couldn't tell where they were missing any sounds on MAME v.170.
You may or may not need others depending on what release of MAME you are using.
These go in the samples folder in your MAME folder.

Artwork files are needed for Asteroids Deluxe and Space Invaders background and overlay.
They can be found here: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?p=1#here and here: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/mame_artwork_ingame.php?p=14#here
These go in the artwork folder in your MAME folder.

ORIGINAL POST:

For the final installment....unless we make another category for things that didn't fit in any category  ;)
It's CLASSICS .... less some things that were already put in other categories.
This category will pretty much be games from the early 80's.

Again, not trying to make a complete list of all games, just ones worth playing

A lot (most) of you guys know the early 80's classics better than I do,
so what goes, what's missing, etc?

JOYSTICK CONTROLS ONLY!

What about Tron, Qix, Tempest, and Star Wars?  I second the votes for Millipede and Gyruss.  Two of my favorites.

All of those games, and a few others in the posts above, require specialized controls - spinner, trackball, analog triggerstick, etc.

ELEVATOR ACTION RETURNS
RAMPAGE WORLD TOUR

I don't think these are classics, they're sequels to classics, and decent games, but also both very much post-classic level tech and visuals so probably should be in different lists?

Maybe you actually need a category for things like this, as well as a category for 'obscure gems' which could cover a lot of games that some people might enjoy, without filling up the categories where people expect to find other games.

Pac Land is in PLATFORM
Track & Field & Hypersports are in SPORTS

There's going to be a lot of overlap here.
If someone wants a list of classics, all they need to do is look at the gamelist for a 60 in 1 board.

Maybe we should just chuck a bunch of these into platformers and change the name of the list to "CLASSICS NOT IN OTHER LISTS"

I know technically this is a "spin-off" of Donkey Kong, but I have DK Pauline Edition in mine along with the DK games.  Worth adding?  I'm not sure if the latest MAME officially supports it or not.  I figured it has DKII so it's only a matter of time.  I have a workaround in place with dkongo.zip.

Thoughts?

Re the Pac-Land is a platformer comment - Shouldn't games be allowed to be in more than one category?

If you compare a ROM collection to a music collection, you might categories by 80s, 90s, 00s, rock, pop etc. Albums can be 90s & rock at the same time, rather than being pigeonholed.

If you do stick to strict rules, wouldn't galaxian, galaga etc. be shoot em ups, or DK a platformer?

I guess it's all subjective, but still a great resource - These lists have really helped me to filter down the ROMs I'll be having on my machine once it is done.

Did we put Haley's Comet in SHMUPS?  If not I'd consider it here
If not Super Cobra, then Scramble for sure
Bosconian?
Sinistar if we didn't put it somewhere else and if there's not a revolt based on control requirements

Would be kind of cool to see all of the finalized lists consolidated into 1 pinned post.

Having said that, forgive if these appear on other lists, as I haven't searched them.

Tron
seconding recommendation on Tutankham.
Rastan - came out in 87..not sure on the cutoff for "80s classic" is, as there are titles up to 85 in the list. also might be in platformer
Lunar Lander
I,Robot
Major Havok
Star Trek
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back

If you're going to dump sequels in the list a la , RWT etc, Millipede has to be in here.

For the sake of simplicity, the lists are limited to plain old microswitch joystick controls.
If someone has a spinner, there is a list of spinner games in the wiki.
If someone has a trackball.....

There is a link to the directory at the top of the first post of every individual list thread.

Sorry I haven't got around to cleaning up the platform and classics lists yet.

Ah...

Given that criteria, should prob remove centipede from the list as it's trackball.

I would suggest Food Fight as well, but again, not micro switch joys.

lol..perhaps a "specialized control" list should be considered :)

Personal favourites of mine are the 2 early Technos games
'Scrambled Egg'
and
'Dommy'

classic 8-bit screen by screen gameplay, if they're not in any other category at least..

also my favourite Mr. Do game is 'Mr Do's Wild Ride'
and I've spent a fair bit of time playing 'Dr. Micro'

First post has been updated with recommended games that don't require special controls or weren't already on another list.

I will separate them into horizontal and vertical when I look up the rom names for them.
(using progettoemma, so the orientation info pops up with the rom name)

Pretty pumped about this list being finished. I'm using these lists on my mame cab with Attract Mode. I'm designing custom layouts for each list. I really appreciate you releasing these.

Got the rom names looked up and separated into horizontal & vertical lists.

Right now for the sake of getting the overall "No Filler" romset done, I'm leaning away from adding more games that are already present on the other lists.  If someone wants to do the work of making a list of games from other lists that should also be on this one, then I'll reconsider.  Trying to keep this list to golden age games (early 80's or older), except for the few sequels that don't have a place in any other list.

I thought I remembered Centipede and Millipede having a joystick option.  If not, they'll get cut.
If someone has a trackball, they would probably use a list of trackball games from the wiki or elsewhere.

When you separate them like that you realize why vertical 4-ways are so popular but no one builds a horizontal one.

Alright, taking horizontal and vertical one at a time here.

Question for you guys.....
SPACE HARRIER has analog joystick input, but plays pretty well with a standard joytick.
Give it a go on a standard stick, then weigh in on whether it should stay or go.

(On my extended to-do list for the driving cab sub-forum is a tutorial on tweaking the settings in MAME to make analog control games play better with standard digital controls.
These options are underutilized IMO because people don't fully understand them.)

EDIT:  I'm using v1.70 to test (it was fairly new when I started this).
Buck Rogers has no sound.  Should I ditch it for lack of sound or leave it since it will probably be fixed at some point?
Astro Blaster is missing the firing sound.  Can anything be done about that? (missing samples, etc?)

One last thing.  Like Haze said, Elevator Action Returns and Rampage World Tour don't really belong here.
I feel like Elevator Action Returns could go to Run & Gun or Platform.
What other list could Rampage World Tour go to ?

JOYSTICK CONTROLS ONLY!

Flame on!

Technically, if that's the rule, you'd strike Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe and Phoenix off the list - they didn't have a joystick.  Sure, they map well to a joystick, but you did say to flame on.  :)

I'd say Q*BERT and Congo Bongo should get the same "specialized controls but" disclaimer that Robotron has - mapping them to the diagonal combinations of an 8-way stick kinda mostly works, but isn't completely perfect.

We're in the final stretch.

I've scratched off a few of these games for not having any sound.
Did the sound work in previous versions of MAME?
Seems hard to believe Buck Rogers & Zaxxon haven't ever been emulated with sound.

Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory is a Deco Cassette.
A timer counts down from 113 every time it is launched.
Any way to bypass that without getting into save states?
If not, I'm going to ditch it.

EDIT: ...and was there a reason I had Pac-Man 25th anniversary in there?  I remember a Pac-Man "arrangement" collection that had lego mazes and such, but the one in the list looks to be the standard games  (Pac-Man, Ms Pac, & Galaga)

They do indeed have no sound. The sound files have to be downloaded separately, you can get them at http://samples.mameworld.info/. The .zips go into the mame\samples folder.

That did the trick.  Thanks!

Calling this list done for now.
I added the speedup hacks of pacman & ms pacman because I enjoy them (well ms pacman anyway).
Also added Rally X to the horizontal list.

I'll post a list and bat file for the entire collection in the directory thread later today.
I'm interested to see how few GB it is compared to the entire MAME romset.

I love the list idea but there has to be a place for tempest and black widow. If I was younger and never been to an arcade and used your list I would never get to be exposed to them. I dont see smash tv and crazy climber also; please make an add on  list for note worthy games so young people who use this list get the exposure to these great retro :applaud: games

I feel bad that they never got to experience the magic of seeing these games as cabs in a dark smokey arcade with blondi or quiet riot blasting in the background.
They treated me like an animal and that's what I became.

Lists are always going to be subjective.

From a personal point of view these game lists must be missing a good 100-200 games I'd consider some of the best in MAME.

Also what people consider a 'classic' is subjective too, most older members probably wouldn't consider Smash TV a classic because it's basically an updated version of an actual classic (Robotron) however both require dual stick controls which excludes them from these lists which are for standard joystick + button setup games.

Crazy Climber and Black Widow are also both dual-stick games, not standard controls.

Tempest requires a spinner
