Low profile led for utrak?
« on: October 12, 2015, 06:25:41 pm »
I have very little room under my utrak for led lighting...maybe 1/4".

I think the rgb unit might fit but this project has already burned the bottoms out of both my pockets.
For now was just wanting a cheap single color led that could fit under my utrak.
The single color blue led bulb I bought with it wont fit.(pic below)

Just wondered if anyone knew of a surface mounted flat option like an IL illumination pad but bright enough to light the utrak pearl?

I bought one of these, I can attest to how well it works.

And if that's not flat enough for you, you really need to route out more space in your machine.

I think it would fit without the dimmer. Wonder if he could make one without...

If it doesn't work out, you could solder 2 or 3 LEDs and resistors like the left half -- R1 and BB.

It uses 3 Button Blaster LEDs with resistors from GGG (BB and R1), 14 LED 12V buttons from Paradise(LB), and an 11 ohm current limiting resistor (R2).

------------5V------------------------>
|     |    |           |     |     |    |
BB  BB  BB       LB   LB  LB  LB (Total of 14)
|     |    |           |     |     |    |
R1  R1  R1        -------------------->
|     |    |                    |
|     |    |                   R2
|     |    |                    |
-----------Ground--------

The left side is the trackball circuit, the right side is the buttons.

Green lines on the attached picture represent the R1 resistors--bend leads to route around LEDs. 5V and Ground wires can be attached to different holes on their respective rails to make mounting easier, if needed. I also fastened a piece of plastic on the underside to insulate the solder connections from shorting out.

Something like this would fit perfect

I should probably really just get the rgb led unit but would hate to have to buy a $60 controller just to light it.
Anyone just hard wire one for a single color before? Would i need a resistor?
Any other cheaper controller?

I just ordered a USB powered LED light for just this purpose. For Reading Wrinting it says!

Thats a clever solution. Did you install it yet? Does it light it up well? Any pics?

Im leaning towards white leds so this would suffice for now.

Our U-Trak illumination kit uses 2 x Cree ultrabright LEDs per color. It has inbuilt resistors and can be powered permanently from 5 volts, to light one or more channels, or plugs into our controllers. It only extends 3mm below the trackball unit.
It draws 120 milliamps per color so has on-board MOSFET drivers for the LEDs

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for this time around. If not, it looks great as it is!

SURPRISE it arrived today. SURPRISE I remembered this thread. The light was ok, then I pulled the diffuser off and now it's great.

Picture doesn't do the colour justice.
