[Finished] - Another Pretendo build
« on: July 13, 2015, 09:24:03 am »
I've been working on this for a couple of weeks now and I'm just now getting around to posting a build thread.  This is a kit from HaRuMaN, I had it done in Baltic birch.  The kit is very well made and went together easily, hardest part was the 4 days it took to paint it.

I opted to use Rust-Oleum's Painter's Touch 2x spray paint, which isn't supposed to need primer.  I started off by sanding the whole cabinet with 220.  Laid down 2 coats on all the interior surfaces.  Once that was dry, I glued the cabinet together using Tightbond 2.  Then 2 light coats of paint on the cabinet and waited 24 for it to dry before sanding it again with 220.  2 more coats of paint where sprayed on, followed by sanding with 600 and 1000 grit.  Another round of 1000 grit sanding followed by 1 final coat.

I haven't committed to any artwork yet, I'm leaning towards the Mario Bros theme though.  I need to locate an artist to help me on that front.

That's Krylon spray paint?   :o  Wow

Sorry, I call it all "Krylon", the specific paint I used is Rust-Oleum's Painter's touch 2x.  http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Painter-s-Touch-2X-12-oz-Gloss-Real-Orange-General-Purpose-Spray-Paint-6-Pack-249095/202058684

FYI, I used 4.5 cans for this project.

Modified initial post to list the correct paint used

I cut a bezel, hinged the control panel, installed buttons and the speaker.  I plan to use a piece of Lexan over the CP and thinking of adding a small button top left for "ESC" to exit NES, Gensis emulators.  I'm powering this thing with a Raspberry PI 2 B.  More on that later...

The hinges are surface mount Euro style.  It turned out that they have enough spring force to keep the panel from moving when closed.

I'm sure they're available elsewhere(probably cheaper too), but I got them at Home Depot:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Liberty-5-8-in-x-3-in-Non-Mortise-Concealed-Spring-Hinge-H01068C-UC-C5/100176398

I used #4 x 3/8" long wood screws to attach them

This cabinet is being built to run 4-way MAME roms, NES and Sega Genisis.  I'm powering it with a Raspberry Pi 2 B running the RetroPi frontend.  I'm using the GPIO driver from Adafruit to allow the joystick and buttons to plug directly into the RPI.  This driver does keyboard encoding, which I found much easier to work with than Joystick encoding.

I have a $3 power strip wired directly to the input plug on the cabinet.  There's a 12v wall wart to power the amplifier and marquee led, a 5v wall wart to power the RPI and the monitor is plugged into 110v directly.

It's an HP 1825 18.1" monitor, which I think weighs more than the rest of the cabinet (14lbs monitor).

I'll take some interior pictures tonight, but there's not much to see, it's a huge empty space :P

Thanks!  It's all about prep.  The Pi build has been pretty easy, the controls where the only hurdle and it was a pretty small hurdle at that.  The RetroPi front end is pretty good, but it's no HyperSpin

Getting there...

I still need to install the marquee lighting and finish the control panel.  Once it's done I'll break out the real camera and take some good photos.  These iPhone shots don't do the colors justice.

looks really good!

Might I suggest "blacking out" the sides of the cab behind the bezel?

That's a good suggestion.  I may move the monitor back a bit too.  I haven't play tested it yet with the bezel installed, but I think the monitor might be too close to the bezel

Another update on this one, close to finished now.

Control Panel overlay applied and buttons installed.  The hinges for the cpo are in the top of the picture.

I took a piece of foam board and kerf cut 1" sections to curve it a bit for the marquee light housing.  I'm using a small strip of 12v leds for the light source.  The leds are 3528's and are plenty bright.  I'll post a picture of the marquee lit up once I get it all back together

I love it!

Only thing I'd give you feedback on is painting the inside of the speaker grill. It looks a little strange with the inside of the side panels the same colour as the outside (in a perfect world they'd be a gloss black). But I'm extremely picky.

It's awesome man!  I can't wait to do an RPi project. So clean inside. :)
