  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Sega MegaDrive Bartop
« on: July 15, 2015, 03:49:15 am »
After my completed cocktail table. I have decided to build a bartop. I have a few bits left from the other build so it should be cheaper this time around.

I saw the Sega Genesis bartop on here and absolutely loved it.

We know it as the MegaDrive here in the UK, so I am going to build based on that.

Big thanks to grippie - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=profile;u=38433 for the inspiration.

Started on the artwork for it.

I am going to use a Raspberry pI for this build. Again something i havent used before.

I want to add 2 usb ports for Sega controllers to allow two players.

I also want to get an old megadrive and use as many parts from it as possible. Volume, on button etc.
Might even add the slot for a cartridge, even though it wont be used.

LOVE almost everything about the artwork... the only thing that looks a bit "off" to me is the fact that you're using illustrations of a MegaDrive on the side art.  I think the beauty of the rest of the artwork is that it turns the entire bartop into one big abstract MegaDrive.  You've already got the beautiful top-down shot of the console on the control panel... I think you're trying to fill in too many blanks for the viewer by putting two more MegaDrives on the sides of the machine (but that's just me, others may completely disagree).

Regardless, gorgeous work and I'm excited to see how this turns out!

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

Mock up looks great, but ya, you need to lose those system images on it. If people can't get what it is by the "SEGA" and "MegaDrive" on it, they need to get the hell out .....  :laugh2:

Since you decided to model the cp after the mega drive, why not continue that theme to the sides, it looks as though there would be "grill" lines wrapping on to the left side? I'm not a huge fan of the graph squares on the sides, maybe just a solid colour? Just my opinion though :)

Just a thought, looks great either way!

Yeah, I reread my reply and it seems kind of dickish but I didnt mean it that way, so I'll elaborate.

I like the clean uncluttered lines of grippies art. I personally dislike side art with a bunch of words, I think you're better off just having SEGA on the sides or no text at all. Remember that the side art is the thing you look at the least that has art on it.

Here's my dreamcast bartop:

no words at all on the sides

I think if you add basic shapes for the buttons and dpad , it's a winner!

All your art looks great, I'd prefer this piece in mono-chromatic though.  The text in white, blue and red just jump right out at me
