I'm looking for a square button
« on: January 23, 2015, 08:42:02 pm »
I'm looking for a square button that is easy to disassemble in the hopes of putting a transperacy label to illuminate it.  Is there such a beast?  Or do I have to use a sharpie and hope it doesn't wear off, or paint it or apply vinyl?

This is what I'm talking about here.

Those are illuminated buttons.  They're available in a wide variety of sizes and colors, and you usually can pull the diffuser out from the main plunger/lens assembly and could put a graphic insert inside.

Happ sells a line of them, and the premium line is from Sanwa Denshi in Japan.  You can also buy them direct from China, of course.

Divemaster has the small regular-profile and small or large low-profile square Happ buttons.

Your pic looks like the large low-profile button here rather than the small low-profile button here.

I went for one.  If it can do what I want, I'll get more.

I'll be sure to give an update when it arrives from the slow boat.

I applied vinyl from slammedniss to the plunger of my Seimitsu ps14kn's. It was cheap, easy to apply, and they look great. I'd go with the vinyl route.

I used those square buttons for the view buttons on my first driving cab.  Also used the rectangular version for coin buttons.
The top part of the button is clear and snaps onto the base with a removable flat insert in between.
Easy peasy to stick a piece of paper in there or apply a decal to the insert.
The insert being removable also makes it easy to trim the label to size.
For the square exit button on my nephew's cab, I masked off an X then spray painted.

Knowing what I know today, I'd use Avery 18665 full sheet clear labels for everything.

Only thing of note that I can think of is that the colored rectangular ones I bought sometimes had white inserts and sometimes had color matched inserts.

EDIT: These were done using the avery labels.  Note the use of color on the xbox button.  The rest were left clear except for the letter.

I have a couple of these around that have been sitting in my parts bin from a grab bag I bought off of Bob Roberts when I did my first cabinet almost 15 years ago.

I don't have a pic of the lamp holder that the switch attaches to but you get the idea. I bet many of them work like this. The little cap pops off of the plunger after you remove it from the housing.

Man...the bezel looks huge on these.

The one in the original pic you posted has a removable collar that does make for a thick bezel.
You can mount the button without it, but the catch is that you have to cut out a square hole instead of your standard 1-1/8" round hole.
It has to be fairly precise, as there isn't much overhang IIRC.

I got my buttons.  Its cold here, so I'm gonna let them acclimate before I start to pry them apart.  Anyway, I ordered a rectangle shortly after the square so they sent them together.

They will work for one of the projects I want to do, but probably not the other.

OMG these twist buttons are so sweet!

Which glue would a person use to attach something to the button?  Say I wanted smaller button?  Testor's?  Gorilla?  2 part epoxy?  Who made those buttons with the thin disc of plexi illuminated?  Anyone remember that thread?

You want a smaller button attached to the big button?  Or you want to convert the big button into a smaller button?

They make smaller buttons like that for video lottery terminals, but they're harder to find.

Ya
I want a smaller square.  I'll watch for those lottery buttons.  I'm just trying to stay away from mouser without a part number.

When you put it that way, you make it sound like a ridiculous idea.  I'm just gonna keep looking for a smaller button, thanks.
