Ultimarc U-Trak...Windows recognizes, but no response
« on: September 24, 2014, 09:05:24 pm »
Hello!

I'm getting closer to finishing up construction on my first arcade cabinet.  I'm close to the final assembly phase (just marquee lights and front panels really to finish installing).  However, I put together the control panel and wired it last weekend.  Everything seems to work, although I am having some difficulty with the trackball.

I'm running Windows 7 on the cab, and using an Ultimarc U-trak with a USB connection.  I hadn't found much info so far regarding actually setting the trackball up, but with a USB connection, my understanding was that it would be pretty much like a plug & play mouse.  The good news is that I can plug it in to the USB drive and Windows does recognize it and install the drivers.  However, my expectation was that it would react like a second mouse.  Thus far, I haven't been able to get any movement of the cursor from the trackball.  I've also tried checking MAME but have not found anything that would really be set up special.

Does anyone have an idea what I may be missing?

make sure the plugs from the utrak aren't plugged in backwards on the usb adapter.  Windows is seeing the encoder, but if the trackball isn't connected to the encoder properly you won't get any x and y axis information and hence no movement.  The two plugs have 5v on one side and ground on the other, with the axes in the middle, so if they are backwards, they won't work.

Thanks, I had a feeling I had hooked something up wrong.  I have the Y-Axis working now, but not the X-Axis.  I think what makes it easily confusing to a novice like me is that I have 7 wires from the trackball and 9 pins from the board  :dizzy:
