Hi guys.

I would like to show you what I've been up to lately. For the last six months I've been designing a handheld arcade unit made from solid wood. It's titled R-Kaid-R(Arcader), and it's a small and precious all-in-one game jewel. The RaspberryPi-based unit has shiny custom-made push buttons, a detachable joystick shaft and it runs on chargeable batteries. You might notice the shaft locking function when not in use... I'm quite proud over that one  :)

The specs will give you ~8 hrs of gaming per charge and the hardware will emulate and support up to fifth-generation game systems, using SD cartriges for storage.
Protected by a tailored shoulder bag made from leather, R-Kaid-R is the arcade machine for the road.  8)

I made three variations, three material concepts.

Video here:

Hope you'll like it! Some might, and some might not  >:D

Really nice work here.  I love the attention to detail and theme including nice leather carry bag.  My favorite is the dark version, there's still that wood grain but with contrasting colors.

Don't worry about me. I'm just gonna go in the corner and shoot myself now.

People with your ability to make things like this from your hands just sickens me. Seriously, your attention to detail in crazy. Great job.

A-ha! I found a flaw! Guys? Guys! We can all feel better about ourselves now!

You need to hire a professional video guy to film your videos. He'll tell you that you need a hand model (dude, your fingernails are dirty - probably from building these masterpieces, though) for the close-up shots... ...and seriously - these are so much "high art" that they really deserve the professional treatment all the way from production to presentation.

And on a (more) serious note, if THAT was the strongest argument I'd ever have against your product, SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! (Although, I don't have the money you're asking for one of those beautiful, beautiful machines.)

Quick question - are you (or have you considered) offering "Numbered Versions"? You're asking a lot of money for these - why not sell them as an "Authentic 1 of 10, 2 of 10", etc.?

My favorite is also the black ash and stainless one.

Being able to both design and make such a good-looking retro-style system is really impressive.

I'm at a loss for words, these are works of art.

My fingersnails are not dirty! They're just a bit "artisan"... very authentic if you'd ask me  8) 8) 8) Seriosly, thanks for the tip. Might use a proper hand model next time  ;)

I'm starting on a new arcade machine concept in a few weeks, very excited  ;D ;D ;D But til then, here are some updated pictures of new R-Kaid-R units

Walnut/copper edition - Centipede action

Walnut/copper edition folded

Black ash/stainless steel edition with boot logo

A special black rainbow edition

And here's a rather strange custom job I did a while ago. Swedish Kurbits edition, hand painted ash

Here's two pals!

I also just finished a new protective hard case in painted oak.

Quite handy!

See you guys in a few weeks! New build log coming up...

I've been looking and I think I'm just not seeing it anywhere, but what kind of hardware is this running?  It's gorgeous and the workmanship appears top notch, I'm just curious about the guts.

Thanks. Well, it's just a cheap Raspberry Pi inside. Emulation that is, so no jamma boards I'm afraid. Hooked on 4x big li-ion cells, gives me over 8 hrs of gaming though.

Loving the high quality finish to this portable arcade - very beautiful to look at.

Am I right in thinking that the Pi is booting from the SD card, and so I could write my own config on that card (being careful not to break the config that deals with the mame controls?)
That way I could add some software based scanlines?
