Full-screen switching intermittently causes blank screen...
« on: December 23, 2013, 01:55:54 pm »
Hopefully someone can help me here.
I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti hooked up HDMI to an LG 32" TV. When launching emulators full screen, about 75% of the time my screen will go blank. I turn the tv off and back on, and the game is running. Sometimes does the same thing exiting the emulator. It does it regardless of running from a front end or not, regardless of resolution settings, and I've reproduced it simply by changing the scaling settings on the video card. (all the settings had the same effect.) The weird thing though, like I said, is that it doesn't do it every time, just most of the time. Also, it never did it until I recently upgraded to Windows 7. Any ideas?

Do you have another HDMI capable display to test with?  If so, that would be the first course of action.

TV's often have firmware issues, but most are field upgradeable with a USB stick.  Check with the manufacturer to see if it has the latest firmware and upgrade if not.

Outside of that, it may be a graphics driver issue, so check that as well.  If that doesn't yield any results, try a different HDMI cable.

Google "Windows 7 HDMI handshake issues"...known problem with Windows 7, multiple monitors, and/or HD TV's. Hyperpin on Win 7 has long delays returning to selection wheel and when first starting the FE, some folks in the community have nailed it down to handshake problems when displaying to HDMI (usually when sent to a TV). Do you have VGA (PC) input on the TV (do you even have VGA out on that card?)? If so, switch over to VGA, I bet it doesn't happen again.

Not sure of the solution, but a newer or older driver will probably solve it (hopefully a driver version will fall out of your Google search).

Let us know.

The first page I checked out shows some similarities and is a good read.  This individual is also using an LG TV and relates his experiences.

I have recently put in an HTPC setup with Win7, touchscreen and projector, and thankfully have not seen this particular issue.  I'm still leaning toward TV firmware implementations after reading that.  At least with a brandname like LG, there's a chance they can do something about it.
