Donkey Kong Country ferret cage?
« on: January 06, 2014, 05:54:02 pm »
I decided to get a ferret again. I just received my ferret nation cage. I'm trying to figure out a theme for it. I'm thinking of possibly doing a Donkey Kong Country theme. Good idea? I figured I'd ask on the byoac forums since this theme idea is arcade related.

Little Feet Ferret Bedding for the tray and ramp covers
http://www.littlefeetferretbedding.org/boutique/cat_339600-FLEECE-FABRIC-CHOICES.html

Friends 4 Fuzzies for the bedding (rope, hammocks, etc)
http://www.friends4fuzzies.com/colorexamples.htm

Ferret.com has a banana hammock made by Marshall
http://www.ferret.com/item/marshall-ferret-banana-hammock/650426/

Possibly the green/limegreen bedding, camel ramp covers, and green tray covers?

Think I could pull this off nicely? Or should I just go with a modern theme that will blend in nicely with my apartment.

Nasty.

Only when people do not know how to care for them. They can be litter box trained and do tricks. If you feed them raw meat like they are supposed to eat (dog food crap makes them sick) and clean their litter box every day, they won't smell. You are only supposed to wash them once a month too. People feed them crap food and they stink a little, then they wash them and it strips their natural oils away so their body produces more oil. Then they smell worse so people wash them the next day and their body produces even more oils making them smell. They are not cage animals either. Being in a cage all day, every day will make them depressed and they will get sick. Cage is only for at work and sleeping. It's just miscare and abuse. Old ferret was a great pet, but went with my ex girlfriend. Actually found him abandoned in the snow, left to die.

I dunno, i had one too, and they do have a distinct odor.

Pet owners get immune to it, but i promise you, you have someone walk through your door they will smell ferret.

A dog owner will tell you their house doesn't smell like dog, i just say ok.

I had an albino ferrett, pinky.  Great pet always stealing stuff.

Remember the ferrets from Beastmaster? Cheeky little devils. And what about those vampire dudes with the digestive wing dealios. Crazy!

I came here asking for opinions on a cage theme idea I have, not to discuss wether or not you like a certain pet.

I never thought  about doing a theme for a cage... Usually if I see something I like and the ferrit might like I buy it. Not sure how you would be able to theme a cage but that might be kinda cool.

Lots of good ideas on the links you provided, the pirate ship bed and other items at www.ferret.com fit the theme perfect.

You should make a topper and call it "(insert your ferrets name) Country" .

Had a ferret when I was around 15, and I would say he was one of the smartest pets I ever owned   :applaud:. Keep us posted...

Well man you kinda brought a ferret cage vision to an Arcade forum, so you should of know the fellas were gonna have more to say that just comment on theme.

We are all just having some fun and commenting.

Now if you were gonna put a screen on that thing and some flip out controls on it, i'm sure you'd get more feedback on the theme.

However, since it's multi-leveled, i think a donkey kong theme would be cool or even a Spy vs. Spy, i know weasels aren't exactly the same but might be something to think about.

Just don't angle the ferrets and you'll be fine.

You remember that ferret on the leash from The Big Lebowski?

Nice marmot!

Walter Sobchak said it was illegal to keep ferrets as pets in the state of California - I'm not sure if he's law enforement tho.  He did have a gun in that movie.  Guys with guns are usually cops right?

Smelly, weird pets that constantly escape and spread disease and are probably illegal or banned anywhere you'd actually want to live.

 :applaud:

Ah well, no stone throwing here.  I've got a bird and used to have a half-bobcat I was told was illegal and uninsurable by our vet after I had owned her 10 years.  I obviously lost a lot of sleep over it.

The only US states where it is illegal to own a ferret is:
  • California because they think that abandoned ferrets could establish a wild population and ruin the ecosystem.
  • Hawaii because they are the only rabies free state. However, they offer quarantine for other pets, so that doesn't make any sense.
  • Washington D.C. only allows dogs, cats, rabbits, domesticated rodents, fish, turtles, non-poisonous snakes, caged birds and racing pigeons. Since a ferret is NOT A RODENT, and it fit's in no other categories, it is not allowed. However, they will allow any other animal on a per case basis with a permit.
  • Not a state, but New York City because they are "potentially dangerous wild animals who posed risks in densely populated areas", but ferrets are domesticated. If that statement made any since, then dogs should definitely be illegal!

And I can't stress enough how their smell can be almost completely eliminated with proper diet (raw meat), bathing only once a month, and cleaning of their litter boxes every day. People don't care properly for these guys and not only is it really sad, but it gives them a bad reputation.

Some people have a dog or cat, and you get hit with odor. It can irate my eyes. But look around and you will find hair everywhere and full litter boxes. Go over another persons house and you won't even know they have a dog or cat because they vacuum the floors and furniture, wash their pets linens, and dry off their pet immediately if they are wet. Ferrets require care too, just not the same exact care. Most people assume its the same care as a rat or hamster, and it is not.

Replace "Clean litter box" with "Flush toilet" and you got exactly how I control my smell.  ;D

Update with some items from friends4fuzzies. I placed another other order with them, and am inquiring about ramp and floor/shelve covers. Might order a raspberry pi or beagle bone for a marquee and sounds. I have a feeling ferrets will come soon! :P

Any cheap lcd or tft display for a marquee? Or should I use a normal marquee and keep the device for jungle sounds only?
