Charlie Brooker's How Videogames Changed The World
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:25:53 pm »
I just watched Charlie Brooker's new show How Videogames Changed the World and would highly recommend it for anyone interested in video game history or just video games in general.

It originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK but you can watch it on YouTube here:
Games: Asteroids Deluxe | Atomiswave | Centipede | Championship Sprint | Defender | Donkey Kong | Dig Dug | Frogger | Ikari Warriors | Missile Command | Pac-Man | Pole Position | Robotron | Spy Hunter | Tempest | Super Mario Strikers

Thanks for the link!

Who the heck is Charlie Booker?  Is he big in the UK or something?

Only vaguely familiar with him myself but I like his hosting style, his commentary is quite entertaining.

It was really good up until Number 1,  I just couldn't believe it.   I won't spoil it by saying what wins, but come back and let me know what you thought.

Charlie Brooker used to write for a UK publication some of you fellow Brits may remember called PC Zone, which is where he honed his gaming chops, though he's better known perhaps for having (co)scripted comedies such as Brass Eye and Nathan Barley (which are both excellent). He also had (has?) a column in the Guardian.

I'm a massive fan. You should check his various "Screen Wipe" shows which run down mainly UK television and pick apart TV as a media format. He also wrote "A Touch of Cloth" which lampoons crime dramas in the style of Naked Gun or something.

I found it interesting and informative.  Has a definite Brit slant which I found showed up in the PC area.  Sinclair was a definite factor in programming.   In Canada I would have said Sinclair?   What is that?  Trs-80 and Commodore Pet here.

I enjoyed it, but I've tired of the VH1 style of documentary where you're hit with a quick series of sound bites from various people.
The people they had commenting were great, but due to the style I had to keep reminding myself that they were smart people from the industry and not d-list celebrities commenting on things they don't know about.  The countdown format also fell into the VH1 style of tv making.

Agreed - I guess it sells though doesn't it. People expect that form this sort of programming. At least it's being shown on a major channel though. That said, I'd love to see a good in depth documentary on the Discovery channel.

It's available to watch on 4OD, so Channel 4 probably had it taken down.

If you live in the UK, try this:

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/charlie-brooker-videogames-changed-the-world/4od

Our overseas friends may not be able to though...

I agree that the final choice seems odd, but it appears to be an attempt to address/summarize the title of the show, "Charlie Brooker's How Videogames Changed The World".

If the show title was "Videogames That Changed The World", then I'd agree that the final choice was totally messed up instead of just a huge stretch.
