Why did I buy a 23" 1920x1080 monitor ?
« on: November 20, 2013, 07:15:30 pm »

I think it was something to do with getting the max resolution I could. But I don't know.

Any ideas?

Because you wanted the closest available to the original PC display standard that programs are written for of 96 PPI. Figure using the standard 96 PPI (aka DPI) for windows based PCs a 1920 x 1080 monitor would need to be 20 x11.25 inches 1920/96 = 20 and 1080/96 = 11.25) and by using the Pythagorean theorem (a squared + b squared = c squared) that would mean a c dimension of approx 23 inches -- so the most accurate reproduction of the 1920x1080 resolution on a PC would be gained by going with a 23" diagonal monitor !

I think this is a good idea. Especially as it allows for rotation.

Now, who keeps a list of current suitable 4:3 screens ?

It has been my interpretation that the displays most conducive to this application have ratios of 4:3, 5:4 or 16:10.  Unless you can find a direct replacement for newer monitors.

So you could put it in one of my widescreen bartops... ;)

I can only attest to monitors I've purchased, but keep an eye out on eBay for these models:
Samsung SyncMaster 214T
Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP

+1 for the Dell 2001FP.  178 viewing angle all around, rotateable, and has DVI, VGA, Svid, and composite inputs.   :applaud:

widescreen Taito Type X fighting games

Fighting games on Steam

If you aren't interested in those, then the only perk is multiple monitor games in MAME.  :dunno

Widescreens can rotate.  It just takes a wide-ass cabinet.  :P

They are cheap.

This rings a bell.

I probably thought why pay more for less pixels, when I can just hide the extra on the sides behind the bezel graphics.

If I HAD to use a widescreen monitor, I'd hide the extra sides behind a cardboard/MDF bezel.

Here is a Samsung 213T on ebay for $140 shipped (if anyone is looking)...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=321254555885&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en

It's not mine, just passing it along since I had been considering it but went with a dell 2001 instead.

I bought myself a dell  2001fp when I first built my cabinet. But it went faulty after a few months.

The problem is those monitors are now really old and I didnt want to risk another.
Bought a 2007fp brand new instead for circa £200 on ebay. - 4 years ago. They rrpd way over that 300 plus if you could find one
