Scale Gameboy arcade
« on: October 24, 2013, 04:29:07 pm »
We had a break, but now we're back...........The bartop isn't even finished yet and we've started the next project

it will be free standing, have a green/black hyperspin theme, and two nes controllers so we can play nes!

we're thinking of having a remove-able cartridge as well......

watch this space.

The hardest part of this build will be to find a 17", 160x144 grayscale monitor.  ;)

Yvan is right. What is you plan for the monitor? Even if you go with a nice LCD is it going to have a gray scale tint to it? It would be cool to keep it scale but it would kill playing NES and other games with it.

In all seriousness I think the major problem will finding a GB emulator that will run at full screen res and not look goofy.  Good idea.  Looking forward to seeing this one completed.

I think this is super cool.
Perhaps GameBoy emulation might not look that good, but I'm sure its still worth playing.
I think this would look amazing in someones games room.
I'm looking forward to watching this come together.
F'n cool!

Bonus design points if the speaker is place on the bottom right.  Are you going to add that weird chin in that same spot?  What is its depth going to be?

Planned a build like this with my lady friend. If I build it it would have a real GBC in it and woudl hack it to output to VGA, so no emulator. This way the giant game carts I make for it would really work!

Damn these giant gameboy builds makes me want to go back to my workshop in the USA  :hissy:

I went to a gamestop or gameworks what ever was next to hollywood video that had a neat setup.  It was a 4' by 3' (whatever scale is) that hung from the corner like a hospital TV.  It was promoting the Nintendo Game Cube and Gameboy player along with the wavebird.

Holy cow, it's going to take quadruple-D batteries for that thing!

Bonus points if you really put a scaled batteries compartment on the back with removable panel and all details.  ;D

AMAZING, great concept idea. Would you be able to perhaps source a large sheet of tinted plexi for the screen bezel?

And to take it to the next level you could paint it with that plati-coat paint to give it the classic 90's texture

We use a local glass merchant. we make a template from paper...... the machine scans it, then CNCs (yes CNC) the glass sheet. I was amazed!

But i'm getting ahead of myself now...... i don't want to spoil everything for you just yet  ;)

OH GOD THIS IS AWESOME!

Please, please put a real gameboy in it! Then do the VGA mod to the gameboy so you can port it to the bigger screen. Then make working giant games that you can put in the top. OH GOD PLEASE!!!

You can take apart the old games PCBs and make a giant case for it and a giant PCB connector!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second the idea of going with a SNES + Super GameBoy and giant game cartridges.

Extra bonus points if you make giant game cartridges with labels and everything for these four classic games:
  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Land
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus

You might want to have those carts made by CNC to have a giant "Nintendo" engraved at the top like the real carts.

Also, I am wondering how you made the concave areas around the gamepad and buttons.  :dizzy:

P.S.: are you going to round up the edges of the select and start buttons slots? Will you add a 1/4" stereo audio jack on the bottom panel once you're at that point in the build?

The mob has spoken at this point. I think you're almost morally obligated to appease this idea or get out of town as fast as you can.

We are in discussion about this project now..... it's kinda moving away from what we intended it to be...(and that's fine)...we caught it early......so its not too late to make some giant headphones to go with it lol.

We enjoy building and documenting the build process of the cabs, and love the feedback we get from the community......that's what it's all about. so watch this space!.......

Am i right in thinking you guys would like to see a 8 x scale Gameboy running official Gameboy internals......with removable carts?

the monitor has two video inputs....so in theory we could switch between Gameboy hardware and emulation (for snes, nes etc)

Some skilled Router work is all you need for the Nintendo logo. I wish I was in California so I could start building my own, but living vicariously through this thread is all I got right now man!!! I needs ma fix!!!  :hissy:

Can't find it, but does this guy use a computer in it? In which case he doesn't have real working game cartridges.

But with such an amazing job you've done blowing up in scale like this, i'd almost say the work you've done thus far would be slapped in the face if you didn't sacrifice a gameboy to run it.

Hyperbole much?  ;D

The problem is taking the Game Boy video output and converting it to VGA or DVI. It can be done, but it's much more complicated than simply using a SNES with a Super Game Boy.

The good news is, someone else already did all the hard work:

As for the carts, you absolutely need to have a scaled PCB with "pins" on the giant carts, with wires inside the cart to go to a real cart housed inside. At that scale, I'm guessing a hand-made edge connector for the giant Game Boy will work fine and be relatively easy to do.  ;D

edit: I just read the "Intercepting the Gameboy LCD" page and it's quite easy to do if you have something fast enough to capture the data. Converting that data into a VGA or DVI signal is another story but I think there's boards out there to do exactly that.

The last problem will probably be about scaling the image properly so that it doesn't look like washed-out crap. You do want clean, sharp, big square pixels on that giant display, right?  ;)

The Game Boy is/was 160x144 pixels, so you have a choice between the following resolutions if you want perfect scaling:
  • 160x144
  • 320x288
  • 480x432
  • 640x576
  • 800x720
  • 960x864
  • 1120x1008
  • 1280x1152

It's a perfect match on the horizontal scale for normal VGA/SVGA/etc resolutions but it's another story for the vertical scale. For perfect scaling you will need to use a resolution that's one-scale behind the native resolution of the display (ex: 1120x1008 on a 1280x1024 display). That means a border around the Game Boy image but the pixels on the real console didn't go completely to the edge either, so it's still "perfect" when you think about it. What display are you going to use? Since you have already cut the LCD area I'm guessing you already have one ready to use and the scale of your giant Game Boy is probably based on that display, so what size is it, what is the resolution and which inputs does it have?

edit 2: added templates of the native LCD resolutions vs the maximum perfect scaling of 160x144 that can fit inside each.
edit 3: removed the black/grey images since I posted new ones with Zelda screenshot a few posts below.

This is exactly what I was trying to describe!

Giant gameboy carts, that actually work!!!

The thing with the super gameboy is a good idea but doesn't it have some lame border around the game you are playing? I faintly remember that annoying the hell out of me......

I totally forgot about those, but wasn't there a way to play zoomed-in to remove the border?

Anyway, since all the hard work of decoding the LCD lines has already been done, I don't see the SNES + Super Game Boy idea as a valid option anymore, especially if the result of reading the LCD data from a real Game Boy can give giant sharp square pixels with no anti-aliasing whatsoever.  >:D

Black screens with grey borders doesn't do it justice, here's real results without anti-aliasing for the Game Boy zoomed display. A 1280x1024 LCD is clearly needed to have the biggest, perfectly-scaled image.

Then again, the Game Boy-style LCD overlay/bezel could simply mask the giant black border around the Game Boy image.  ???

You need to click on the 4th image to display it at its native size.

The mod seems to be pretty involved, you may have much difficulty accomplishing this hack. Integrating it into an FPGA might be a bit tricky if you have never messed with one before.

Does anyone know it playing a non-color gameboy game on a gameboy advance looks legit? I ask this because there is a GBA to tv adapter already

Actually this might even work better if the original GB games look good on it.

http://www.k1gba.com/gba-console-team-hardware-system-multiplayer-out-p-37.html

It is a fake gameboy advance sp, but it has dedicated video out to a television!

Hope all of this helps somehow.

Smart money's on a 6 D-Cell Maglight with a red filter. maybe laid on its side with a mirror directing the light to the hole. Cause i mean, it's bright enough for scale, but with 6 D-Cells, its just a bit too long to put directly up to the hole...

The Maglight's too wimpy.

Use one of these with a red filter.   >:D

Bezel Diameter - 1.37 inches
Output White Light - 500 lumens    :dizzy:

You'll need to use an external power supply and about 3" of 5/8" dowel to make a replacement battery plug.  :lol

I like the idea of the button for the power led.  I was just wondering if it would be conducive to actually cut a hole out of plexi or put install it so that it sits above the plexi serving as both the power led and power button.  Just a thought.

Get the GBA SP I mentioned before and it already has TV out

I think that would work best for our your projcet if you can't tackle the VGA mod on an original. Or if you have the money I am sure you can find someone on a forum somewhere that has one or is willing to mod one for you.

The red button is a great idea. It should give the same look and feel of the LED on an actual Gameboy. I would stick with it under the glass. If your going to make this b*tch as realistic as possible build a real working power switch.  I'd assume your planning on painting the backside of the plexiglass grey for that same top glass effect?

it will be free standing, have a green/black hyperspin theme, and two nes controllers so we can play nes!

Well, I you want them to use a real gameboy.  That wasn't the intent in the beginning.

More updates;

Ok i'm really starting to stress about the vga out now.......the GBa tv out thing......can that be convert to VGA? does the GAa even play GB classic games???? also i'm sure we'd lose points if we used a GBa and not GB Classic!

If anybody knows anybody that can really help me with the VGA output (or where i can buy one!)....please post away!

Yes, the whole GameBoy line is back compatible up to the GameBoy SP, the first folder model.  The SP will play GameBoy, GameBoy Color, and GameBoy Advance games.

You can use any RCA to VGA converter to handle that. I used one on my recent Half-Size build and it was perfect.

NOOOOOO!!

Has to have giant gameboy games that actually work. Even if you can't do the VGA mod easily, at least it will be easy to use a GBA SP w\tv out. Won't be actual gameboy but still......

Since this one is being tackled, when I return I may have to make a giant GBA....oh la la

how did you pull off the curved edge? I can't really tell by the pictures? Kind of looks like a 3" dowel ripped in half and recessed to accept 1/2" MDF.

You know, i was just thinking, you're gonna need something like an air compressor to be able to properly blow on those cartridges when they games fail to play.

You can't have an authentic GameBoy experience unless your build includes the magnifier, external speakers, and joystick expansion.  I want to see a full replica man!

You guys are crazy! MORE is BETTER.  Who ever said they want LESS steak on their plate, or LESS carbon fibre in there McLaren MP4-12c, or LESS lingerie models in their threesome, or only one package of Pez candies when they buy a dispenser, (thats heresy)?!

Even bad things, More Sharks, More blood thirsty zombies, More Geddy Lee?  (ok, maybe Rush is the ONE exception. (Rush sucks)).

I say: turn this b*tch up to 14 from the 11 it's hovering over right now.

That gives me an idea for a future build: "The Homer"

But seriously, back on topic, please don't waste time with accessories until the "Gameboy Massive" is complete.  (There, there's the name, calling it now)

It does look awesome.  If you really want it to look authentic you need to use an LCD with horrible viewing angles too, haha.

Made the power switch...................

Dude, for all the amazing progress you've made so far, you're going to settle for something like that? Are you nuts?

Then we redesigned it;

That's much better. You even have the lock for the future giant Game Boy carts too.

Awesome is too poor a word to describe how amazingly awesome it looks like.

Have you found a giant red LED yet? I remember seeing something on Sparkfun, Adafruit or somewhere similar.

If you are going to be using a PC, an emulator and giant crafted cartridges, you could use NFC tags to tell the emulator what game to load............ somehow

Can anyone state-side help our man get a VGA mod done to a Gameboy? I know there are a couple of you EE guys out there.

If not Jahilton, just get one of the GBA SPs I linked that already have TV out and be done with it. It would be in color though........hmmmmm.....

After searching a bit, I found the following solutions:

Given the scope of your project, I think it would be best to contact someone who has done the VGA adapter on an FPGA.

Get an SNES with Gameboy player. Connect the SNES to a cheap CGA->RGB converter. Output to your monitor via VGA.
SNES' can output RGB without modifications, you just need to hack up the AV cable and connect them to the right pins on the CGA->VGA video input.

Just Do a direct VGA mod to the gameboy it wont be overly hard...
You can not have come this far and put an emulator in it.

I would love to do it for you but i am located in Australia, and don't have a gameboy to experiment on they are long gone.
You have a pinout so the hard part is done... send it to a convertor just measure the voltages from your gameboy and lower or raise it to the sepcs of the convertor, knowing these things i would say it would be lower. (Best thing about electronics is its all maths :) there is a formula for everything )

Find the exact res that gameboy is producing then find a convertor that can do it, if none exist then go find a chip that can do it, build a PCB on EAGLE-CAD print it out on a laser printer then iron it on, drop it in some acid and away you go, however a convertor may need a grounding plate.

When in doubt about things like this it is best to leverage off other-people and this is not an electrical forum.
You have some awesome skills and there would be many people that excel in this space close to you that are on electrical forums. do a short description of what you want to do and pictures of the project, will be an awesome step to learn another skill set.

Maybe start here http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3
Awesome project

It's the little things;

Agreed. There's nothing bigger.

Which is why I say to hell with these suggestions of using anything but a real gameboy to power this. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard. Your build hasn't come this far to stop short on such a key important part of realism.

Mind you, I also say modify the LCD so there's no backlight, and it gives the same green feel naturally with a painted LED Defuser for that realistic green look. But hey, I'm an extremist.

Indeed, all the hard work has already been done by other people, so I also vote for putting a real Game Boy in there. I offer to help with the giant cartridges interface too.

Painted LED diffuser? I'm not sure what you're talking about. LCD is liquid crystal display, the only LEDs are for the backlight and if the display is old enough it's not even LEDs doing the backlighting.

I say he needs to disable the backlight and put a light green filter sheet on top of the whole display. Getting the perfect shade of green will be the biggest challenge.

We've thought of a number of things, Vac form, CNC etc etc

we have access to a few tools between us, but we haven't really thought too much about yet if i'm honest. we still have to upscale the male/female cart sockets first.

anybody know where i can get Gameboy "spare parts" ... namely, game cart socket....and a blank game cartridge slot?

Nice work on the detailing. I want to see a giant pair of hands reaching down from the roof to play this monster. When it's done you need to make a mock tv commercial with it.

The moment the first sheet of wood for this build was purchased was the same moment it's coolness surpassed the one in those links.  No comparison.

Doing the raised letters on the carts shouldn't be too hard.

1. Using a stencil of the word "Nintendo" draw and then cut out the letters.
2. Make the giant concave area around the cut outs.
3. Add a thin layer of wood under the concave section,
4. Place the cut out letters back into the holes of the concave section.

Vola, raised letters on a concave area.  No carving or CnC needed.

Sure, no argument from me.  I was merely referring to the name of an existing project.

The sheer attention to detail in this project is inspirational to say the least.  :notworthy:

Thanks really sweet of you man.....however we're gonna try our best to go Gameboy hardware......even if that means it takes a little longer (or we have to run emulators in the interim)

Kudos for the offer tho fella thanks!

The Gameboy VGA struggle

As some of the Gameboy project followers are aware. One of our main concerns was how to output the Gameboy’s screen to a VGA monitor. This has given us a major headache, as we simply having no idea (at all) how to do this.
We searched the internet hi and low and found nothing but “dead-end” projects. We finally stumbled across this gem of a site;

http://www.fpgaarcade.com/

The owner of the site (AKA Mike), is in the progress of developing and manufacturing a FPGA board designed specifically for the gaming/Arcade community. The “Replay” board...............Click here to read the full article

Don't worry Mr bee, the project is still alive..... just we're running out of space at premier HQ and recovering from the xmas/new year period.

we are also in talks with maybe starting two commissioned projects, which of course take priority. we also have a the bartop to complete.

We don't want to rush the Gameboy and want to do it right.

updates for our current projects will be poster here (or in the relevant project thread), or you can visit our site and subscribe to our social media pages.

I'll keep you guys in the loop don't worry.

The Gameboy Hacks have started

As mentioned before. Mike over at www.fpgaarcade.com is helping us make our Gameboy project a reality.
He sent use a picture today that got our attention!
here’s what he had to say;

I’ve attached the victim to a Replay board and captured the video signal.
The picture below is a bit fuzzy, but I had to add small resistors to protect the FPGA from the 5V signals.
The next step is probably to remove the gameboy crystal and send a clock over from the Replay PLL. This will allow me to lock the VGA and the gameboy video together to avoid any tearing.

Hi Guys,

Just to let you know, we haven't abandoned this project.

You wouldn't believe the number of emails and msgs we get on this thing from all over the world.....Lots of eyes are watching this build, so we want to get it right.

The main reason we haven't progressed much on this build is because of the video output issue.

This project is now our only project at the moment.... Hopefully 2015 will be a good year :)

..................... oh and i think a door just opened for us ;)

I've been waiting for an update.  :applaud:  this is above and beyond one of my favorite projects EVER. Gizmodo/Chive worthy.

Finish it, then bask in the Gamer Glory and fame.

I've glanced at this project from time to time. Is there any reason you can't use a SNES with the Game Boy Adapter? If it's because you really have to have a Game Boy in there, I fully understand, but the SNES and adapter is pretty close (",)

Personal opinion: anything other then an actual Gameboy in this is a miss.  If it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing.  Just saying.  ;)

Also, just remembered that the SNES adapter emulates a GameBoy bezel as well, so that would look crap. It would look like your Gameboy is emulating a GameBoy  :D

Subscribed.

Take your time, but finish it quickly!  :hissy: jks

I've read a lot of build threads on this site and this is simply the most ambitious while also delivering. Well done guys and keep up the great work.

Soooooooooo..........................

Things just got a little more serious!

Yesterday i posted a link to a video referencing to the "hdmyboy" website.

The hdmyboy fits in between the front section and the rear section of the Gameboy. It intercepts the buttons and video signals and outputs via HDMI.

When i visited their website i learned that they had a kickstarter project in the pipeline and have a number of prototypes available for sale.

Its a joint project between brothers Zane and Josh.

Zane and Josh live in the Netherlands. We John (me) and Peter (Wol) are based in Manchester England.

I decided to email them via their website and show them our website and Gameboy project so far. I did this at 1.10am!

I got a replay back about 20mins later........ I have posted the email exchange below;

Hi John & Wol,
That looks beautiful!
Josh and I will be flying to Manchester for a family event today and flying out tuesday am.
Where are you based and will you be around? We will be in Radcliffe in the morning and staying in Rochdale. We will have a car.
I don't think we will be to bring a test prototype, but we will try.
Mail me,
Zane

I know it's real short notice.....but yes you could could pop round and have a look at one of our arcades and the current progress of the Gameboy.

we are based here... <info removed>

We'll be in after 6.30pm

keep me updated.

Hey John,

See you at 8,

So yeah........ they turned up at 8ish and left around 10ish......

I have lots to tell you all............ but for now.......it just got REAL!

Big thanks to Zane and Josh for popping round at such short noice. It was great to hear the journey you had made with your project.

it's amazing that considering how big both this community and the communities Zane and Josh are involed in, we were totally unaware of each others projects......

Pictures were taken, hands were shaken and we all had smiles on our faces.

Watch this space!
