Assuming a 6 button CP, what colors - combination would you partake in?

all black, all blue, or the SF colors, 2red 2blue 2white

but it really depends on your theme.

Rgb led buttons, that way you set different colours for different systems/games.

I think it depends on  the theme of the cabinet.I matched mine to the colors of the ninja turtles on my 4 player cabinet.

If you are going to use leds, I really like the look of those clear buttons with black centers...very classy

Either all the same color, or all the same color except for button one. (That helps those without natural intuition find the fire button).

I tried the Neo Geo colors for the bottom row of my 7 button layout but it did not look good so I agree all buttons per player the same color depending on the artwork.

If you go neo geo colors, don't re-use one of the colors for the other row.
Gotta be black, white, or grey for the second row.

Hmmm....I think I"ll stick with 2 color themes only.  Somehow, the mixing of colors seem too messy.

I went with pewter, brass, copper and aged gold for my 4 players  :) , but the buttons for each player were all the same color.

Black and purple also look really nice together.

For my bartop I went all black for the controls - white player start buttons with black label - blue for admin and red for coin.

I think you are right on that. I will give top row all black another try as I already use white for the admin buttons...

Match the theme of the cabinet.  I've seen awesome cabs with all orange buttons, and awesome cabs with all black.

There is no set rule, I think the best looking cabs theme match everything, right down to the buttons.  Anything else looks like color vomit.

On my vertical 4-way, I use clear buttons with RGB LEDs whose colors light up depending on the game.

Like the others stated, you really have to tie it in with the theme, or have it pop so much that it just works in some way. That said, black goes with almost everything. I personally have yet to do anything other than black or red.

I'm a big fan of all one color per player. My first CP used multiple colors, and it only really confuses people.

I'm using all white to compliment my theme although grooveygamegear has white ones that can be lit in any colour. You could have them light up to match the original button colours to the game being played it to show what buttons are active for a particular game

I plan to use smoke colored translucent buttons with RGB leds that light up the colors of the original control panels. I have an 8 button layout so I can also recreate most of the layouts of most control panels as well. I expect it will be really nice once i get it going.

Did this once, good for explaining which button to press by color:

Not really an issue while you're in the middle of a game.  You either know what to press by then, or you don't, and by the time you remove your fingers to look, you've already died.

That and the rainbow scheme just looks horrible IMO.  Unless you were going with a My Little Pony theme.  it might work then.  Maybe.

...I've yet to see a rainbow layout that looked good.

edit:  Now if you had RGB LEDs lighting the buttons, and they were constantly transitioning, simulating a rainbow during an attract mode setup, it probably works.

Clients pick their own theme. But a big chunk of my builds are built with no client in mind, like the color themed ones of my Half-Size builds.

So shove it!

I buy batches of random colored buttons, paint them to suit my needs, and top coat them with several thin coats of poly.  I hear Future floor polish works just as well but might blue/cloud when wet.

I took apart a goldleaf button from ultimarc and realized it would be cool to buy two sets of different color buttons and then swap out centers for contrasting colors (I.e. black and orange). I thought this was an original idea until I saw that someone else had already done it. I'll probably go this route on my next cab.
