Just purchased my widescreen kit last night.
This will be my first build ever. Gonna do a RetroPie build since i'm already comfortable working with Raspberry Pi.
I just joined the forum and if someone could have Malenko PM me, that would be great. I'd love to commission him to do the art for my kit.

Thanks for the purchase!  I have pointed Malenko in your direction.

I'd say the midway cocktail is done. I learned enough with the last one, it's good. And I have some prototype 3/4" clips that need testing, too

OK, so I just ordered the Degentron, T-molding, Marquee, Bezel, retaining clips, etc. I have a couple of questions before this all arrives and I start on a new project.

First off, I see that you're saying a 17" is recommended, but that a 19" would work.. have any specific model of 19" that will go in this? I want to maximize viewing.

Second, what are the dimensions of the marquee and bezel, and where can I find someone to do a custom one for me. This one is actually gonna be for a friend of mine from work and will be going into his mancave/bar. I'm thinking Hyperspin this time around instead of AtomicFE like I used in my sons.

Typically a Dell 19" 4:3.  As long as the width of the monitor is less than or equal to 17.7", you should be fine.

Malenko here can help you out.  I'll let him know you're looking for art.  The marquee is 17.75" x 4.5", top & bottom half inch should be black bars, leaving 3.5" view-able.  The bezel is 17.75" x 14.25".

Is the widescreen marquee basically is 22" x 4.5" (3.5" view-able) and 22" x 14.25" for bezel?  I am finally putting the widescreen I purchased from you together.

Thanks

Hello everyone. Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Finally ready to buy one of Haruman's ultimate widescreen kits to build with my son, but have a few questions:

1) Thinking a 6 button each 2 player setup will be fine. Am I missing something by not going with the extra two buttons? I know some games will benefit from it, but do I really need for games that I may not play?

2) Why do people add admin buttons? Thinking after I set this puppy up right, they won't be used enough to warrant them being added. If anything, I could add usb to the case and connect a keyboard and mouse for any "administrative" tasks. Or I could use "shift" function that Ipac has.

3) Maybe this is a question specifically for Haruman: I see the area where the speakers go, but it looks like your choice is to connect both speakers inside the the marquee with all sound going through the holes. I plan on a specific color scheme and would like to paint my speaker grills and have them exposed. Anyway I could have the speaker holes recessed, so the grills are seen, but flush with the body? I've seen a few cabs with this look and I quite like it.

That's it for now I believe. I'm sure there will be more, but I'm hoping I can get answers from other places.

Thanks in advance...

No, you do not have to install admin buttons if you don't want to. On my very first build years ago, I installed them because the iPac back then wasn't capable of the shift function that it is capable of now. With my son's cabinet, I left the admin buttons out and use the shift function. The iPac will program on the fly now, so setting buttons to do different things is really easy. My son's is a cocktail type cabinet and his is setup like this:

Left side button is PAUSE>shift 2nd player start
Fire button 1 shift=TAB
Fire button 3 shift=F3 (reset)
Fire button 4 shift=Vol down
Fire button 6 shift=Vol up
Right side button is ENTER>shift ESC

These are the most common admin buttons you would use and they all come together in a neat little package, works perfect with the AtomicFE frontends default settings. I was originally going to install admin buttons as well on the side of the cabinet.. that was before I found out the new generation iPac's use the shift function.

Now on the one I bought from HaRuMaN however (The Degenatron)... I WILL be installing admin buttons in the front because the holes are already there. On the Widescreen Bartop, if you look at the image, you will also have those buttons pre drilled.. of course you don't HAVE TO use them as admin buttons, you could use them as extra buttons or even fill it in with some LED's or something.

Another question as I'm about to partake on this journey it seems many people have been taking recently - that of building my first Mame cabinet using Haruman's Ultimate Widescreen kit...

What are the benefits of running a PS3 or XBOX 360 as the main system instead of custom built PC? Obvious thoughts are having the ability to play those system games as I believe emulation for these systems is still undeveloped. Am I missing anything? For those that have went this route, are you able to run Hyperspin; as well as emulators for other systems? Please explain pro and cons of going console in cabinet route.
Thanks in advance.

I have an Xbox 360 in mine, I swap discs for various fighting games and shmups.  Mine isn't modded, but you could theoretically put a modded one in there to avoid swapping discs.  I'm not sure of what else is out there for a modded 360.

Hi Haruman,

Is that just a glossy silver? Where did you get the buttons, sticks and t-molding for this?  Thanks

So it's a chrome T-molding if that's what you are asking.

I got the T-molding at T-molding.com:

http://www.t-molding.com/3-4in-chrome-t-molding.html

The sticks and buttons were all the customer, I'll have to see if I can find what he used.

Left a review of "The Degenatron" on your website for ya HaRuMaN. And to repeat (more or less) what I had said for others on this forum to read:

Very easy to put together, but there are some considerations to be had before you just "GO FOR IT". First of all, you'll probably want to pre-mount the speakers/amp before gluing everything together. Otherwise, that's a pretty tight space to try working with. Also, note the bottom button ADMIN CP layout depth. If using something like HAPP buttons, you are probably going to have them banging into each other and will more than likely need to use spacers. PLAN AHEAD for this!! My personal recommendation and what I will be doing when I build another one, is to buy one WITHOUT the 3 extra holes drilled at the bottom and just use the "SHIFT" function of an iPac 2 and just program your admin buttons into the regular buttons. This will enable you to put the CP on using HAPP type buttons and joystick without bumping into anything up front. I was able to squeeze a 19.1" monitor in this cabinet with no problem at all. I used an ASUS VW199T-P. It is also noted that this kit it totally worth getting the extra T-molding and plexi glass bezel/marquee to go with it. I went a step further with the bezel plexi and tinted the glass using a 20% darkening tint (Wal-Mart®™). Using black duct tape around the monitor's bezel, then installing the tinted Plexiglas bezel gives this cabinet a sweet looking appearance and hides the monitor buttons, lights and branding.

Fair review.

On the front buttons, I use Ultimarc GoldLeaf buttons. They fit the Happ hole, they look like Happs from the top, but under the CP is where they shine.

First off, add me to the group that loves these kits.

The front panel buttons caused an issue for me as well.  I eventually realized that I had some shallow buttons from a used CP and it changed the situation quite a bit.  Using a shift key is a nice solution as well.

Guys, how did you secure the control panel?  I went with one of the velcro suggestions from somewhere in this thread and I would like to improve it.  Also curious to see some of the solutions for getting a power cable into the unit.  I ended up just drilling a hole in the bottom.

I drilled 2 holes in the back. One for power, and the second one for a USB port.

As small as the cabinet is, with a little tweaking to the design, you could actually fit a PC and a second console in it. I'm pretty tempted to attempt this next time around. I'm thinking I can do something else with those admin button cut out as well... like for instance, stick the USB port there instead.

What would also be nice to see, are included hinges with starter holes pre drilled, and perhaps a magnetic latch for the door.

And yeah, I also went with velcro on the CP. I debated drilling holes and screwing it down, maybe some hinges, even nailing it into the batons... said to hell with it and went velcro instead. That doesn't make it very secure IMO, but it will do for now.

So, I've been slowly compiling design changes, and have been testing out some new hardware to make these kits better...  :)

Some changes are in the works!
