2 player to 4 player convertible arcade?
« on: January 24, 2013, 03:08:37 am »
Has it been done before?

Something like a full size standup with player 1 and 2 in the normal positions and attachable "wings" on either side with hidden connectors?

I live in a small apartment with just my fiance and being able to have a machine that is just two player when we don't have anyone over, and 4 player when we invite friends would be great.

Plus it would be much easier to handle when moving instead of having to remove a full panel.

Maybe with 3 or 4 of those metal couplers on each side painted or powder coated to match the black sides of the CP?

Just throwing ideas out there, I know a 4 player machine with a removable panel would probably be the easiest route, but considering space is a premium, having a skinny CP when needed and a wide CP when friends are over seems ideal...

The current plan is to build my machine with a 27" Sony Trinitron monitor and XBox for the guts.  Most of my friends loved the old XBox and being able to throw down on some 4 player Fuzion Frenzy would be great.

Just a thought, instead of creating foldable/detachable complex solutions, how about adding two USB ports and getting two cheap gamepads? It will be way cheaper and you can keep the arcade look more clean.

It's the route I am going.  I have the gamepad 'select' button mapped to the MAME coin button (the pad also has a 'start') so it works like a charm. The pad I have is also PS3 compatible, I'm sure there will be XBox joypads as well.

Hot swappables can work (I have most 2player control panels, and one 4 player).

but the 4 player doesn't have much room  (the two on the sides often not sure which direction is up... especially kids).

After having it... if I was going to do it again, I would agree with usb ports on the side.  Then you could also have 6 player when needed :)
