Side art not holding/sticking
« on: November 13, 2012, 11:56:52 am »
So as the title says I'm having an issue where my side art isn't "sticking".  Let me add more info:

Cab was primed twice and painted twice (flat Black Matte).  This was done about 4 months ago.  The surface was cleaned and let dry.  I applied the side art following the video's the guy posted in the wood working forum.  No bubbles were present and initially it was stuck.  Since they it started coming up.

I reached out to the Side Art printer and he was wondering about my paint which I am wondering about too.

Does anyone have any other things I can look at?  Did I mess something up?  Is it my paint that's causing it not to stick?

I agree that the paint would be the first suspect I'd look at.  Did you sand the paint and wipe clean before applying the sticker?

What paint/primer?  Where the sticker is lifting, is the paint coming up with it (stuck to the sticker)?  Is the paint AND primer stuck to the back of the sticker?  Could be original surface prep/bad primer.  Had it happen a couple of times...especially on MDF.   :banghead:

100% it's your paint. Stickers don't like matte finish (should have been gloss or satin). You have to watch what type of gloss you use also. Best to use an oil based enamel, so avoid water based if you can. Also, avoid bathroom oriented paints that have teflon and other chemicals added for cleaning and mold reduction. These additives can adversly effect the paints surface energy.  Depending on the quality of the art, you might get away with peeling it off very carefully, painting, and then reappling with one of those 3M spray adhesives.

Copy that, thanks for the responses!  It was a water based Matte so yeah, go me lol.

I really would prefer not to repaint, so I think when I'm going to try is using Liquid Nails and applying it like I would wood glue with a thin spatula and see how it holds.

Sorry to hear about the side-art.  Hopefully you can get it sorted out...I'm dying to see how it turned out.
