He has to just be showing off. Heck, I would be too if I had that stuff (not that I don't have some cool stuff to, but not like that). That room could certainly hold a lot more games. They aren't exactly in the best layout at the moment though.
Optimal space saving layout would probably have both standard pins right next to each other. All the uprights in a row with the Baby Pac and the Mame sandwiching the Jr. Pac and the Ms. Pac.
Also, one of the reasons I don't like extra-wide control panels is that those machines are difficult to fit in a row with other machines. Not only are they wider, they also tend to poke out further, which means you have to pull your other uprights out from the wall to compensate, and you end up losing a good deal of floor space as a result.
Granted, that is not a problem with a small collection, but it you have a row of 7 uprights like I do, just having one "Deluxe" one with a wider/deeper panel can eat an extra 12 square feet of floor space (the one foot you have to pull the other 6 games out to compensate, times the width of them).
Single pins, and all cocktails also tend to be difficult to easily work into smaller game rooms. I will probably just end up putting my cocktail in the kitchen, rather than waste the 25 square feet in my gameroom that it takes to properly set up a cocktail (mine takes a 5'x5' square counting the chairs and the space to walk around it on at least one side.
In general, the more stuff you have that is the same size, the more you can pack into a room. If you are rich like Todd from TNT Amusements then you can specialize in minis (which save A TON of space, provided you have ALL minis), he has like 60+ minis in one room.
Real floor space eaters include the following.
Dance Machines, all types. Although not as much as you would think. A 50" Pump barely eats more floorspace then a 13" cocktail cabinet.
Quadrapong and all other 4 player "island" style cocktails. Nothing eats as much space as these.
Newer cockpits are space monsters, but the old ones aren't. Most of the old ones will slide right into a row of uprights, and just poke out a bit further (still taking less space than a pin).
Air Hockey, foosball, shuffleboard (especially shuffleboard, a single table takes the floorspace of 7 upright cabs), pool tables, all other non-video table type games.
Skiball. At least the full size ones, they also make short ones that take about as much space as a pin.
Good space savers include.
Moppet and other subcaberet cabinets (including Turbo mini, and Space Firebird mini).
Bartop games don't really save as much space as you would think they would. Unless of course you already HAVE a bar to put them on. Just putting one on a small table and adding a barstool takes just as much space as an upright.
Pachinko machines are good when you have wallspace, but have no depth to work with. THey are only about 6" deep, and they hand right on the wall.
