U.A.M. -A Gaudy Yet Refined Project
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:18:50 am »
Hello,

Officially announcing my official first Arcade Cabinet Project. The U.A.M. (Universal Arcade Machine) This will be a space themed 4 player arcade cabinet. Currently the resources I have are enough for the control panel. I got hit hard by bills so it may be some time before I can have a dedicated MAME machine and afford the rest of my supplies. However. I do have some panel pics (attached to this post). Things are very bare bones for a while, but I am definitely enjoying myself!

(Arcade Controls [Machined and buttons fitted, apologies for the poor quality. Took this pic on my dumb phone])

Excited,
Bryden

I'm guessing you plan on playing a lot of 4p console games as well?  What do the buttons at the lower edge of the CP do?

Officially those are pinmame buttons, as I was unable to find another location for them that I was satisfied with. That being said they likely will not get much use anyways. Glad you noticed the wealth of 4-player buttons. Yes, I will be playing 4-player games very often, as I am an avid fan of smash bros, I also like to entertain. I will also be using the 4-player layout for my own game that is in development, and I will be posting the beta here on the forums.

Waiting at work,
Bryden

Great to see more cabs coming up on the boards with games being developed for them.  I'm liking this trend.

Can't wait to see what kind of game you come up with for the 4P control scheme - I do love a good party game!

Hey everyone,

Its time for an update. I spent all day wiring yesterday, and only got one player done. I'm frankly a little disappointed in my general slowness, but it did get me thinking. I don't really want an upright cab. So I've decided to switch to an arcade podium. This changes my design in several places. I will be mocking everything up in sketch-up/ or maya, depending entirely upon how into it I get, but I do have some cool things planned, based mostly from things I have seen here that I really like. For example. I was a huge fan of the modular build using cat-5 cables to simplify wiring harnesses, so expect to see something related to that in my build, and I think going a step further on that concept I will use a network switcher to interface other pcb's into my build (i.e. xbox, n64, ps2/3, dreamcast) whichever of those I'm feeling. Also I regret to inform everyone that my game is on the back burner for the moment. The game library I was using does not support online play, and I would prefer to build my own game library anyways, so I'm going to start that project with a friend of mine this winter after finals. However, if I find the time I will still try to finish what I have in the other game library, and release it as a concept alpha.

More progress as it slowly comes in, including a sketch-up design, and some screens of the new plans.

Always learning,
Bryden

Hello everyone,

Got my design blocked out in Sketch-up. Check it out. I'll be going to the lumber store soon. Hopefully In the morning to get the new lumber pieces for the change to a podium. I'll be posting more as progress continues. After I get the structure finished and assembled I will be posting pictures.

stay tuned!
