Clarification on multiple trackballs...
« on: August 20, 2012, 08:37:39 pm »
So I have a gutted Millipede cocktail I might MAME into a "multi" pede... if I have two trackballs, and an opti-pac, will I be able to play 2 players appropriately (p2 disabled when p1 is playing and vice versa)?
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

Opti-Pac can support two trackballs (and two spinners) connected simultaneously, no need to disable them, mame will recognize them independently. I have two trackballs in my 3-sided cokctail and they work great together...

From Ultimarc:

Plug USB cable into the connector on the board and connect to the PC USB port. The PC will auto-detect the device and install a standard mouse driver. (Actually it installs two mouse devices)

Looks like it should work fine  :)

Thanks, I checked the site but wasn't sure how windows would handle two mouse devices (if it would sum the input into one, etc.- I was looking into using trackballs for a homebrew game but the game dev forums said 2 mice were a no-go). But I guess if it did combine the input no one would buy the optipac!  ;D

MAME can do it, with the proper command line switch, so it can be done.  I think you need to look at the RAW input methodology in order to support two mouse devices simultaneously.

Thanks Randy. I assume a couple Opti-Wiz(es) would be another alternative for a 2-trackball cocktail?

Yes.  If you decide to go this route, make sure that each Opti-Wiz on the same PC has a unique device number (i.e Device 1 and Device 2).
