Welcome aboard, PT.

I think you need about 10-15 posts before PM sending enables.

Who are you trying to reach and what is the topic?

If they are receptive to the topic they might send you a PM with their e-mail so you can discuss it offline.

Thank you both for the warm welcome!

I've been lurking around for a while now. Sounds creepy when you say it that way...Regardless, I'm just starting my MAME project, and it's going to be a while before it's done. Progress is slow because the wife has stipulations about selling this before I can buy that etc. HA!

Anyways, I'm slowly putting my plan together, getting all the emulators working, and acquiring some parts. It's going to be a 4 player upright cabinet. One of my prime motivations for this project was to have a working 2 player light gun cabinet. I wanted it to have real arcade guns. I happened to see the HAPP 45 caliber guns and see that they were discontinuing the "deep purple" model. So, before I knew if I could actually use them with MAME, I bought the guns.

I've since scoured every thread on every message board I could find to try to see if there's a system of any kind that will allow me to use my guns with MAME. I read a lot about the Opti-Gun adapter, and saw all the negative comments (that were mostly speculation), but I did find one thread that had an interesting post. It seems as if the folks at Nanotech who made the opti-gun adapter sold it to Global VR who renamed it the usb2gun. A forum member here called dmarcum99 claimed that he has the board and that it works great with his setup. See this thread http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,82460.msg1209063.html#msg1209063 He didn't have much more to say on the subject, but I would like to ask him a couple of specific questions. Since then another member (lodoss118) had bought the board, but could not get it to work right. I suspect though, that that might be because he was trying to use a Namco gun. If you look at the original opti-gun specs, it says that it works with HAPP and Betson/Imperial guns. Furthermore, if you can dig up and OLD thread where Mr. David Foley from nanotech was talking about the product pre-release, he mentioned that some guns were not compatible. Hence my desire to ask dmarcum99 a couple things about his setup!

I know a lot of people seem to be recommending the Aim-Trak system from Ultimarc, but that doesn't seem like a route I want to go if I can possibly find another way. I've carefully watched every video I can find, read everything I can find, and come to the following conclusion:

1. It seems that this system is not actually accurate to where you're aiming, but is only accurate to the extent that you can move a cursor around. I want to aim with gun sights, not with a cursor. I have a Wii, and that's not the experience I'm looking for. It's 2 different ways of playing a game. I was a 3DO Mad Dog McCree maniac. I want real arcade light guns!!!

2. I'd rather not hack up the insides of my (now discontinued) purple HAPP guns if there's any chance that a real light gun solution will be available in the future.

I have seen a recent thread about integrating a camera instead of the LED sensor bar to make the aim-trak more accurate and better functioning. I might be able to convince myself to go that route if it was the ONLY way, but I want to exhaust all other possibilities first. I also don't want to screw up my bezel with a sensor or camera.

It's funny. All of the amazing creative solutions that people have come up with, but this one seems to just be the one nobody can figure out. I understand that many people have LCD screens now, but the games that I want to play were originally designed for a crt screen with light guns, and that's how I want to play them again! You'd think if the ACT Labs guns could function even halfway decent, that someone could come up with an interface board that would actually work. Some of the people on this forum seem to be able to solder up their own personal nuclear reactor out of some bits of wire and a couple resistors, but yet here I am holding two HAPP guns with nothing to shoot them at...

Well as far as I know, if you want to use REAL light guns, you are going to need at the minimum, a CRT of some sort.  It is getting harder to find CRTs, and that Opti board is only an interface, I thought you still needed the CRT to blast that little white square to be picked up by the sensor in the gun.
A Wii (and Aimtrak)  has an IR camera in the control, and a distinctive array of IR emitters that the camera looks for, and judges where the gun is pointed based upon that.  The Wii sucks compared to an Aimtrak, but the Aimtrak isn't perfect, but it does offer an intelligent calibration method that the Wii lacks, so it is more accurate.   I have used Aimtraks in Happ shells to play various games with no crosshairs, and it works at least as well as some of the arcade guns I've used in real life.

User by the name of John Blund seems to be headed towards light gun development.  Check out this thread.  Way too early to tell if it will actually happen but Emphatic vouches for the guy.  I sincerely hope he produces such a device.

I have often found it can be more price effective to just buy an actual game that uses a specialty control than it is to try to shoehorn some of the stranger controls into a mame build.

Light guns in mame are one of the areas that, well, are still somewhat lacking. I would probably just check craigslist daily for 3 months or so until I could pick up an Area 51, Police Trainer or similar in the $200 range (they do come up in that range often enough, all the time in the $300 range). Sure you only get one game, but it will get that shooting monkey off your back and there won't be any compromises in how it works.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

HAHA!! You know...that's totally my fault. I've only been married for 8 months and I'm still learning the ropes! If I'd have said "I think I'm gonna build an arcade machine", she would have been all about it and given me no grief whatsoever, so long as it's themed purple and has an awesome jukebox, both of which it would feature with or without her. But I had to open my yapper and say "You know, I think I'm gonna sell my old drum set and eBay the rest of that stuff so I can use the money to build an arcade machine". To a guy, that means I'm just gonna build an arcade machine, but to my wife, that means I'm ACTUALLY going to sell stuff first. Lesson learned!!!

The tophat stays! As do the purple HAPP guns, the Purple 1974 VW Bug, the 11 purple ties...oh the list goes on and on! The wife wouldn't want any of that gone anyhow, so I can breathe easy! HAHA!

Good to know for sure! The CRT is no problem! Besides the fact that there are tube tvs all over the world, how long do you think it will take before EVERY 25" arcade crt monitor is gone from the earth? Loooong time! If all else were to fail, at least I know I can go the aimtrak route and have decent aiming without crosshairs. I'm still going to wait and see what develops, but plan B is always good to have.

YES YES YES! That does look intriguing, doesn't it? I'll be watching that thread for sure! He seems serious and capable. It seems to be a ways off, but I can definitely wait for the real deal!! We need to encourage him and support him in this endeavor. I liked seeing that you offered to send him a HAPP 45 for testing!!! Seems like our best bet for sure!! If he pulls that off, he is the man.

HA! Funny you should mention that. I just found a Lethal Enforcers on Craigslist for $200. I asked the wife about it earlier and she said to go ahead and get it. Then she proceeded to give me 20 reasons why I didn't need to, and said that if I'm patient I can just integrate the HAPP guns into the MAME cabinet I'm going to build. To be fair, we're renting a condo right now while we're looking to buy a home, so it would just sit in the garage for the foreseeable future. That's part of why I'm not rushing to build this cabinet. I've nowhere to put it until we move. Don't get me wrong, I'm married to a sweet, wonderful, beautiful woman (is she listening?), but I just don't get why she has to be so damn logical all the time. Sometimes you just wanna go out and buy a Lethal Enforcers cabinet for $200 that you leave in the garage for 6 months untouched. How does this not make sense? Bah...she's right, but I hate that she's right.

Alright, so I'm going to hold onto hope that Mr. John Blund has our backs and proceed with my designs as if I'll be able to integrate my guns one way or another. You haven't heard the last of me though...fear not! For I am completely inept, and shall be needing loads of advice! I'll be sure to post these questions in the appropriate sections. Thank you all again for the warm welcome and for the swift answers!  :afro:

I'd want to hear what Andy from Ultimarc says about what it is that John Blund is planning,  I dropped out of my EE courses decades ago, so I am in no position to judge its true feasibility.  But it sounds like a tale I once heard about a man named Paul and his capacious cerulean bovine. :dunno  Until then I'm not altering any of my plans.

such is the problem.

It only a problem due to the way LCD's and other video technologies display information on the screen.

CRT's actually draw white on the screen (flash) for the gus to pick up...this takes time to do. You pull the trigger and the computer starts counting how long it takes to see the flash. it gauges a rough estimate of where the gun is pointed by how log it takes to see the light. the single flash you see is actually 10 or so quick flashes in quick succession. the computer takes an average of all of them.

LCD/plasma/projection TV's all update the screens one frame at a time. so you end up with one frame of picture-one of white-one of picture-one of white. There is no "drawing time" so the counting until the flash doesn't work.

I know this isn't exactly what your looking for but I use this.set of AimTrak lightguns on my CRT screen. Arcade Guns are the closest thing to the real deal that Ive found. See full review here:
