ShoRyuKade 2.0
« on: May 27, 2012, 11:01:30 pm »
Edit: decided to call it ShoRyuKade (for now)

The good:
Monitor has a great picture, just needs some minor adjustments, I dont see any burnin either, weut!
Perfect 360 controllers, I think these things retail for more than I paid for the cab
cab is very sturdy, and since it was in a Laundromat it actually smells GOOD, like fresh linen
looks like it has a fairly new switching power supply in it (last pic)
Free CPS2 kick harness!

The bad:
cab is kinda beat up, has a buncha holes I'll need to patch
The wiring is a mess, but that's not exactly a tough thing to fix
Bezel is borked
Marquee has gapper tape all over it and will need to be replaced, I salvaged the translight
Marquee light needs replaced, it works but its LOUD
Monitor glass has DEEP key scratches
Tmolding is shot.

enough text, here's the money shots:

Its gonna stay in the garage so I can take it out to the drive way for sanding /painting /etc

Run N Gun! :D

Yup, some awesome guy sold it to me.
I was waiting for the download and conversion of the attract videos to finish, but its been going for over 8 hours. If only MaLa played MP4s (I cant hit the website and dont have the beta)

I've been working on game lists, even though I have almost the entire romset for the mame build I have (.141), its still too daunting to have 19,000 games to pick from. Anyone have any example game lists in MaLa format?

I just went through the exercise of buying a lamp, starter and replacement line filter for a noisy florescent on a ms pac.  just go get the $8 undercab 18" fluorescent at the hardware store and have done.

Why isn't your garage full of pinball machines?

Why isn't your garage full of pinball machines?

Can't afford the free shipping from San Antonio, Texas :)

Ok, so I pulled the guts from another computer I had sitting around, Athlon X2 6400+ 4,GB of Ram, 500GB HD, and an Nvidia 9800GT and a Corsair 520W PS; should run mame and the Taito games just fine. Not sure I can get SFxT running at a low enough res to play on the arcade monitor haven't bothered to try yet. I got all that mounted to the slide out board from the Dynamo cab along with the Jpac.  I couldn't find a good way to mount the DVD drive to I screwed it into the hard drive bracket and covered it with electrical tape for aesthetics. I already have MaLa and most of the game lists made, I can always RDP into the machine for additional changes over the network.

enough jibber jabber, here's more pix:

The Dynamo slide board:

Power supply mounted:

motherboard stand offs installed:

motherboard installed (w/giant HSF):

hard drive mounted (using a USB case frame, hey, its all I had):

Stand offs for the Jpac, doubled up in height:

everything installed:

everything installed, different view:

Now the power strip is held in with a cable hook (plastic hook with a nail in it) over top the cord. the screws just keep it from sliding around. It will be laying on its back so I don't for-see it moving at all. I used extra screws to "box it in place" I'm not dumb enough to put a screw through a power cord , heh.   Next step is making sure all this works in the cab, then I redo the sides and order new buttons and T molding.

I might have a bracket for you at the house so you don't have to use electrical tape on the CD drive. Remind me when I'm not being lazy and I'll take a look as well as get you some connectors.

got the bracket, no more electrical tape, heh. No pix of that yet, I'm waiting for the EDID dongle from germany. So I pulled the buttons and plexi from the CPO:

Gotta figure out a way to drill a new 7 button template per player, prolly cut most of that out and hope the plexi can support the buttons :/

WOW, so this cabinet has been retro-Fitted a few times.    Its like mice have been eating though that thing.
Personally id leave what you can.   Perspex sitting even on this will be strong enough to support button mashing  ( unless you have LEAD  hands )

So had to go to Lowe's to get a new filter for my fridge, so I figured I'd snag some plexi while I was there.

2 sheets was $48 and the guy was nice enough to do multiple cuts without giving me much grief, and he actually cut straight lines.  He wouldn't/couldn't do the angles of the CP, so I bought a plastic cutting knife for $5. Since I had 2 extra CP plexis cut, I might just take one over to my grandpas shop and have him cut it on a table saw, although my cut wasnt too shabby. I'm prolly gonna run the dremel along the end so its more flush.

Guess I need to hire snake to do some artwork or something.

new plexi screen and marquee:

Control panel:

and another ISO shot:

next up, casters and fixing up the sides.

scroll down to the bottom if you want to see how I retrofitted my panel. It's the same situation you're in.

Great job on that, that's going to be my last resort. I think I can just acrylic over the Swiss cheese, but if it doesn't hold, I'll do that.

In other news, EDID dongle shipped 4 days ago, according to the email I got from arcadeshop.de  Ive asked SNAAAAAKE to do the art, I'm waiting on a template so I can get the drilling done. KI2 marquee can be a place holder for the top. Once he sends the template I'll drill the holes and mount the buttons/sticks and see how it holds up. I wanna use him but if I dont get the template by tomorrow I'll PM someone else

naw, nothing like what you have, I just wanted to light the "stickholes" blue to match the buttons and what not. You set the bar WAAAAYYYYYYY too high when it comes to lighting a cab up =)

oh yeah, my EDID came in, weut!

Re: The unnamed Dynamo

so I used my KI machine to make the button template:

then I did the same for player 2. I put the plexi back on the panel and marked off what needed to be trimmed. I ended up taking a hand saws-all and trimming the metal back. then I wrapped it in black leather texture vynil (mostly just to cover the butchered panel) as a place holder till I figure out the artwork.

I think it turned out rather well:

I also bought casters but they can wait until tomorrow or later in the week, my back hurts from crouching over for almost 2 hours to get the panel squared away.

so yeah umm DVI to VGA adapter, EDID dongle, VGA cable:

still cant get soft15 to install :/

so I put one of the sticks in:

same p360 stick, just different shaft.

I also uncovered the plexi for the monitor, need to make a new bezel still though, old one looks like crap.

so in light of soft 15 not working (and no response from Sailor Sat) , I may be putting a different PC in there running XP with a 6800GT card (no dongle required) should still be plenty enough to run most MAME games, we'll see. Cant wait to mount a different PC, wheeeeee

Project looks great so far!
I have two of those cabs and love them.
FYI you can squeek a 27" crt in that cab hanging off the factory mounts.

spent a while yesterday rewiring that rats nest of a control panel:

moved the jpac to its new location:

and, the one thing I thought was going to go smoothly, didnt:

I think I need to bridge the hsync and vsync to C sync ; cant wait to blow up this monitor

Needs more tuner spray...
filled it with blinker fluid, then rebooted 3 times:

actually it was a resolution issue, this WG 25K7171 hates a TON of resolutions and Im gonna hafta go through and remove a bunch of them from soft15.  Ive had quite a few arcade monitors and this is the one I like the least by a lot.

so fired up KI2 just to see...... wait that's not right....

stupid "stretch using hardware" was on!

a lot of collapse at the top of the screen, its not like that when playing PCBs, wtf is up with 7171s?!

here's the PC, no DVD drive cause I dont need one. totally different computer than what I started with. This is a core2duo 2.6GHz per core (E5200 cpu) and 4 GB of RAM running windows XP Pro SP3:

here's a pretty good shot of the wiring, I ended up having to redrill the green button's hole and moving it up about 3 inches, where it was at you couldn't hit it from the inside:

I think it turned out rather well.

last MAME I built for me was Mortal Kabinet, lol
This is machine #4, does that count as an arcade?

Here is the marquee installed:

and here it is lit up:

heres the control panel, havent added the art yet, and theres some plastic shavings between the acrylic and the panel:

and here's everything as it stands now:

so CPO is installed, took a freekin HOUR

pinned it between the plexi and the CP:

cut the holes: (and trimmed the corners)

tada!

I think I need new P1 and P2 start buttons:

so other than making my mala skin and layout (and making more game lists) the cab is pretty much done. Only took a month! Now I can get back to work on my racing cab!

started working on the front end, well skin for MaLa. I will probably go with fairly bright yellow text for the "pop" factor and capcom factor.

640x240 is such an odd resolution.

top left will be the marquee, bottom left will be screenshot/video, the right will be the game list and the little box at the bottom will be the current list selected. After I get ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- running on the cab I'll grab a screenie or I'll just fake it in photoshop.

Malenko,

As you make your layout, don't forget to compensate for the 640x240 resolution stretching to the 4:3 (which would be 640x480) screen. Your background should look short and fat when you view it in a paint program.

The arcade monitor will run at 640x240 for the front end, no stretching (its non interlaced). I attached the background image to the previous post and it looks short and fat.  As soon as Im done tweaking the layout, I'll attach it here and see if loadman wants it or not.

Currently I'm updating the ROMs, videos, marquees and screenshots. wheeee

Is there anyway for vertical games to maintain aspect ratio and the horizontal games not to? Donkey Kong looks weird like this:

but with aspect ratio off, KI2 looks like this: (as seen before)

so honestly I got tired of trying to tweak the PC and MAME and I just wanted to play some games, so out came the PC and in went the Sega
Dreamcast. It is *STILL* wired for JAMMA and still has the JPAC wired inside.

Here it is running SF2:WW (thanks Haruman!)

Wh000ps! I think I snipped the wrong wire on the VGA box.......

Heres the VGA box right to the monitor with a breakout cable, looks washed out:

I think it needs a video amp, so I ran it through the JPAC:

I really need to redo the black, but P1 side is wired:

Dreamcast running Namco Collection:

Hey, its one way to get my Galaga fix while I work on other things.

So since its not powered by a PC anymore I had to work on a new instruction card:

aaaaaaannnnnnd done!

and printed. I also need new P1 and P2 start buttons

I drilled holes in the board where the power and video wires go, so the DC is far enough back I can close the coin door and its hidden!

Nester DC runs great and has no issues with the VGA box. I need to find a super nintendo one next and maybe a MAME one that doesnt balk at the VGA. Attached is the PSD file incase anyone wants to use it as a base.

BTW quick question, that SF:WW is running through the DC too? How so? Emulation? How good it runs emulated on DC if so?

Thanks for your time and awesome job!

Yeah the SF:WW was me showing that JAMMA still works in the cab. Sadly I play Mars Matrix and now Under Defeat more than the fighting games. I got the idea to put a DC in it just for MvC2 then I thought of all the other good games that would work. With bleem I can play some good PS1 games too ( Tekken 2 is fun, so are the Mortal Kombats and SF EX series)  I got a pretty sweet nintendo emulator (NesterDC) and Mighty Final Fight is surprisingly great.  Games like River City Ransom play just peachy on arcade controls. And with that Namco pack, Pole Position is more playable on it than on my racing cab

ShoRyuKade! Not Powered by Dreamcast! new pix 7-16-2013
« Reply #56 on: July 16, 2013, 10:23:41 pm »
No moar Dreamcast powered ShoRyuKade....

Put together a PC to go in the cab, tested MAME:

Some Street Fighter cross Tekken:

Super SFIV Arcade Edition:

and of course the new Mortal Kombat:

And yes, thats the monitor going into the cabinet as well. Its a 24" Dell and its pretty amazeballs. With the computer all squared away (its running Hyperspin, but more on that in a later update), I turned to fixing up the cab. Im going to pretty much redo everything. I started by pulling the arcade montior, theres nothing"wrong" with it per se, but I just cant get the computer to play nice with it, theres always some sort of image issue and Im just tired of ---smurfing--- with it. I took the monitor out along with the jamma wiring and power supply. The monitor and power supply are off to the side next to a new JAMMA loom, in case I ever choose to revert this back to a real arcade machine down the line.

This is where it was before I got started, and this pic is just me showing off the diamond kick plate, I think it looks neat:

Here is the Dell 24" LCD test fitted into place with the control panel removed:

Monitor framed to the existing monitor mount, despite the fact you prolly will never see it, Im goin to paint that wood black:

I had removed the control panel, sanded it all down and smoothed it out, light coating of silver spray paint, also painted the bottom of the CPO plastic with the silver paint for a smooth metallic look that cant get smudged with fingers:

IPAC2 is already ordered and I'll prolly order new sticks and buttons. Very very strongly considering adding the 7th "neogeo" button but i havent decided on button colors and whatnot yet. The monitor is slightly smaller than the 25" tube, but the entire cab now weighs less than the old monitor, heh.

All I've done so far is gut it.

She needs a lot of sanding, elbow grease, and bondo work. Already bought an HS5 power supply and a new deluxe JAMMA loom from twisted quarter.

So laid her down and tooka nice "before" pic.  The scratches on the bottom are not from my sander, but the previous owner's dog.

Smoothed out the sides, eliminating the deep gouges

First of many primercoats

Second:

Sanding between coats to level out the paint

FiF, like my favorite amendment , of primer

First of many coats of red. This is a darker red than the apple red I used on the neogeo cab. I will probably go with Black tmolding since I already used white on red with the neogeo.

sanding between coats

I think this was the final coat of red, its all a blur. The bottom box will be removed and the base will get repainted black separately.

Less pix, but this is the other side post sanding down, first layer of primer

Removed the coin door and patched up a buncha dents n ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---

between coat sanding on the side, post bondo sanding ont he front

and the last coats of primer on the front and side.

Red should get done tonight if it only takes 4 coats. Black will get done tomorrow. Maybe.

ok so boring restore is boring.  ::)

Put her on her back, and put a first coat of black on the front

This was like coat 3

finished up that pesky right side with red

then laid it back down to finish the front's black and repainted the base

Dont look like Much but this is like $100 shipped from Twisted Quarter:

Was kinda irked that the coin door wires arent crimped with QCs and the power supply didnt come with the needed bolts.
Did like that it has the kick wires for the non jamma compliant multiboards pre-broken out, even if I dont use them.

So mounted the monitor and made a new slide out shelf. Didnt have any wood wide enough so I spliced 3 pieces of pine with glue and biscuits (no gravy)

Marked off 2 5" holes to reach through for latches. Factory holes are square but circles are easier.

Saw em out

considering hole sawing a 3rd hole for the middle latch, but meh.

Then make sure I can reach the latches and that it shuts.

Started the JAMMA wiring.

Each player side had a molex plug, and Im trying to keep the wiring close to factory, except using screw downs instead of zip ties stapled down.

Probably will not be a MAME cab. "Oh Naomi!" guts will probably get transferred into it. Dynaclone cab will probably get a multi board stuffed inside and sold off. Right now Crazy Taxi and SFII Pinball are up on the chopping block.

I honestly dont know what Im doing with this stuff right now. Im really hoping I can land an Open Ice board so I can get back to work on the other more important cab.
