Where to find this part? "top entry" coin slot
« on: April 02, 2012, 11:26:14 pm »
Does anyone know of a good place to buy a "top entry" coin slot.  I don't need a mech, just the actual metal bezel thing for the slot, looking for a simple square one that does not have a reject plunger/button/whatever.

This is what I'm talking about:

http://www.coinopexpress.com/products/parts/coin_accessories/Small_Coin_Entry_3483.html

or

http://www.happmart.com/Pro_Details.aspx?id=512&px=13&sid=45

The problem with these sights is that the first one has a $200 minimum order and the second one has a minimum order of 100 pcs (I'm assuming that MOQ means minimum order quantity?).  Also it doesn't say what size coins will fit it in, I'll probably use .984 tokens and US quarters.

Does anyone know of a better place to get these?  I've been looking on Google, Google Shopping, eBay, GroovyGameGear, Paradise Arcade, Akihabarashop.jp, etc. with no luck.

I'm also looking for the coin microswitches with the wire actuator, but it looks like I can order those directly from Happ if necessary.

Do you have any local metal shops?  You can always try taking it to them and see if they'll do it for 10-20 bucks.  More than a single one costs on those sites but less than the minimum order/minimum qty.

I don't have an original one to copy.  Could draft up the shape and dimensions I want, but I don't know if I could get the small curvature and polish from my local machine shop.

Probably want to check with a reseller like divemaster instead of dealing with Happ directly.

I don't know if the OP wants it, but that's not flat. It needs to mounted on a sloped area. Bleh. I think he said he didn't want te reject button either.

I decided to just cut a slot for my coins. I don't like it much but it will have to do until something better is found.

You should stop reading a certain person (who shall remain nameless) garbage opinion about what I write and actually read what I write. You'll be surprised.  :P

Back to the topic. Why does Happ sell a plastic version flat but the metal version angled? what machines are the plastic ones used on? I've only seen the metal ones in casino style machines.

I've hunted for something like that too, and have resigned myself to getting a rectangle of stainless steel and cutting a slot in it.

Maybe you could salvage one from a beyond repair slot machine?

Maybe I could get something cut at the machine shop and then have it chromed.

I'll also look into places selling slot machine parts as opposed to arcade stuff.

Thanks for the ideas everybody, and let me know if anyone finds a better option.

You could press it into clay from a hobby shop and make a mold and pour lead into the mold.

Press the shape, it doesn't look like that complicated of a piece. You don't need the original to get the shape of it, I work in a body shop and we have to do that all the time for little parts even if we don't have the original if the piece is small and easily duplicated you can take a popsicle stick and form out the mold.

Or, you can make it out of clay, bake it, and then press that into clay for a mold...whichever is easier :)

@eramsabe
Not saying that we shouldn't use lead, but TBH, it wouldn't be my first choice of material for an arcade cabinet.

Of course, American money has all sorts of traces of weird stuff or whatever. So a few lead tainted coins isn't going to add much to the mix.

Personally though? Wouldn't it be easier to do something like carved foam or wax with plaster of paris mold then burn off the wax/plastic during the smelting process? I say this because clay well.... looks like clay and I think cut metal looks a bit better than well... Mr. Bill. :dunno

I see what you're saying about lead but I was going for more of an ease of use kinda thing and clay is pretty easy to work with. Lead can be found anywhere (walmart fishing isle, lead weights) and be melted down really easily. That much lead wouldn't really harm anything and it would be easy to shape after you made the part. I was just offering a means to make a part :)

You could try this and cut off the bottom bit, and spray it with some rattle can chrome. Or leave it.https://www.theplaydiumstore.com/p-540-loonie-insert-for-esd-push-chute-canadian.aspx

If you can model it in 3d, there's always shapeways.
Check out my current 3 machine build:

I was liking the plastic one linked to, but I'm thinking that it has to stainless steel or chromed.  Anything painted will rub off due to constantly putting quarters in the center and rubbing your fingers over the rest of it.
