Can mala do this?
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:21:49 pm »
Hello Mala users.

I've been using AFE for the last 2 years - but for some reason it has become unstable, not quitting properly, not recognizing controls, freezing - et cetera. It works, but whenever I use it I'm always waiting for the other shoe to drop (usually when I've got people over).

I've gotten to the point that I'm considering switching to another FE - but I've got reproduce the following menu structure:

Some details - the classics area actually combines MAME and Daphne, plus I've got a second version of MAME with the settings for vector games.  The PC area (as you may have guessed) is filled with cab-friendly editions of PC games and the last main section is videos - where I've got nostalgic clips (which are a big hit - must collect more).

So here's the question - based on the video - can MALA be used to reproduce it?

Please let me know.

Yes.  It'll take some set-up to get it exact but I don't see why not.  Nothing seemed that out of the ordinary.  You can for sure mix MAME and Daphne roms into one list, it takes a bit of doin' but there are plenty of walkthroughs about mixing emus in a list (see first sticky in this section).  MALA will run whatever you throw at it just about.

Great - the reason I chose AFE (Atomic Front End  ;D )  in the first place was that it was easy to setup combined lists and create nice animated layouts.

LeChuck - I'll take your word for it and have a go at setting up in Mala.

Question is what's the best plan?

Should I set up the structure & emulators first using the default graphics, then create the eye candy or vice versa?

Be seeing you,

AB

PS:  Does Mala have any known issues with Steam games?

I'd download a generic layout that is similar to what you want from the MALA page (if one exists) so you have a working base.  Then get your EMUs up and running, then the videos up, then work on the art and transition sounds.  There will be a learning curve but it's worth the time IMO.  No idea about Steam.  I use it to iron my shirts, that's about it.

MALA is very very easy to install so you can check it in the same PC.
Greetings!
