Button Inserts
« on: March 21, 2012, 02:02:07 pm »
Hey guys, what kinds of buttons are capable of putting inserts into?  I'd like to us an arcade pushbutton as the power button to my pc, but with a power symbol insert inside.  Is there a list somewhere?  Thanks!

You should be able to do this with any clear button.

Also, you can use an opaque button, and use a vinyl sticker, like pongo sells.

There's the convex LED buttons that you can get from most vendors around here. But you can also do this with concave transluscent IL buttons. This was just printed on normal paper...

You can take a Seimitsu button apart and put an insert inside.
Any of them with a clear or translucent top, of course.

Here are mine (awaiting a new cp):

I see the clear ones on a lot of fight sticks, where people have their artwork continue accross their buttons.

A cheaper route is a square or rectangular 8-liner (poker machine) button.

Thanks guys!

Is there anyplace where you can purchase just 1 button and not have to pay $5+ shipping.  It seems wrong to pay $8+ for a $3 button.  I obviously should have planned my parts purchases better.

Paradise Arcade sells buttons with inserts, including inserts to represent power buttons:
http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/en/led-chrome-pushbuttons/35-led-pushbutton-with-bw-insert.html

They only have them as lighted buttons, but the option of a chrome button surround might be cool for a power button; however you could inquire to see if they can do the inserts for non-lit buttons as well.  They also have color-inserts:

I'll probably be going the chrome route with a red button and power symbol insert.  But like I mentioned before, that's $8+ for only one button when shipping is added in.

What do you have now?  Someone had mentioned Pongo's vinyl button stickers, so if you have opaque buttons that you aren't using you could just go that route instead of shelling out 8$ for a single translucent.  I am sure the shipping on flat vinyl stickers would be < the shipping on a button.

EDIT:  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64645.0 here is Pongo's thread

I don't have anything besides an extra Midway start button, and I'd rather use something bigger that I can put an insert into.  Unfortunately, being that I'm new to the hobby I don't have extra arcade parts laying around...yet.

Just think of a few more things that you would really like and order them at the same time as the button.  Then the $5 shipping will feel quite cheap by comparison  >:D >:D

Indeed!  If you go the Paradise Arcade route they've got all sorts of intersting items.  If you have lit buttons, they've got EZswitch button connectors that are great for grounding the light and switch together with one wrire, or for making your light turn off while the button is pressed.

I always throw in a couple of things so that my order ends up around $20, with shipping. Maybe order a few extra buttons so next time you aren't scrambling to find one  ;D

How did you make those inserts for the buttons with letters?

How did you make those inserts for the buttons with letters?

I painted the white inserts that come with the buttons silver and had pongo cut out the vinyl letters for me.

Here's the info I sent Pongo if anyone wants to do the same exact thing.
But I did it first! :P  (even if I haven't gotten the cab built yet)

Code: [Select]
Need 4 each: A,B,C,D,X,Y,Z
Arial Black font
14mm tall
white vinyl
(I ordered double in case I screwed up)

You could draw xbox looking buttons, print them out on photo paper and put them under clear lenses.
I was originally going in that direction, but couldn't get them to look the way I wanted because I'm not that good with illustrator type programs.
I'm pretty happy with these although the silver came out of the rattle can a little darker than I expected.

I can hook you up with whatever you want on vinyl (singel colored vinyl). cut it and prep it with backpaper (make a sticker, kinda).
Problem is, I live in Norway (Europe) so shipping would be stupid!
