New video card!
« on: January 23, 2012, 12:44:50 am »
So I'm looking to upgrade the OLD pc that i'm going to use to run mame and other emulators on.
What I've got is an old emachine t2896 that I've dropped the best processor it can support into, a p4 3.06ghz and a geforce fx5200 vid card with 256mb ram (got SO much mileage out of this card : )  The emachine currently has a 1 gig stick of ram but I'm for sure upgrading to 2 gigs.

Video card is what I'm stuck on though...
This computer only has pci slots.  No agp or pci-e slots.
I'm not sure what video card to get.
Looking on newegg, I could buy a 1gig geforce 9 card for around a hundred bucks.  But I kinda think that would be complete overkill for this pc????
And newegg is showing a bunch of jaton and sparkle brand cards which I've never heard of so I'm open to purchasing a card from elsewhere.

Could anyone PLEASE give me a recommendation on a vid card to buy?

*edit*
I want to be able to play dreamcast and ps1 emulators on this pc.

Well how about throwing that crap out and buying a new machine like this:

Always liked AMD.  ;D

Yea thought about that but this machine pretty much runs anything I want as far as emulators go, it just needs a little boost.

You can always strap a rocket on it!

Seriously in order to get the performance you need to run these types of emulators you need something beefier.  And we are not just talking about just the chip.  I thought the price of the box was pretty cheap considering at that link, but I was also amazed at the wireless 50" LCDs on offer.  I want a few of those!!!   ;D

replace the MOBO with an AGP/PCI-e that accepts the CPU and RAM.

I might have MOBO with an AGP SLOT for a P4 3ghz

We run Jaton PCI cards on legacy Windows NT boxes here at work all the time.  Haven't had any issues with them.
