Quick question about high scores
« on: January 08, 2012, 02:48:40 pm »
If I have an older set of roms (like, really, old .83) and I update with the a new set of roms (like the most recent) will i delete my high scores?  i just want to write over my old files if I can, i don't want different versions of mame roms on my drive since my drive is only 80 gigs (too lazy to add a 2nd drive at the moment) I should make my husband do it :P

is there a good reason to keep two sets of roms on the computer, i mean like .83 roms are going to be different than the new roms set

updating your ROMS will require you to UPDATE MAME too (specially ver.83).
Updating your .83 ROMS to recent ones using an old .83 MAME will make lots of games not to work.

If you want to update to recent, you need the recent MAME and use CLRMAME for your ROM management.

well i already have the most recent version of mame running the old .83 roms, (laugh) surprisingly a lot of them work!  but its time to match the new roms with the new mame.

what does CLRmame do?  take out all the mahjong games?  :applaud:

so, again will rewriting the old roms with new roms eliminate my high scores?  right now I have MAME saving state when i exit the game.

official MAME build suppport save states (on some games) and got rid off the Hi-Score support. You need to get a un-official build or compile one yourself adding hi-score support.

I use MamePlus, which I started using specifically because it keeps high scores.

Replacing the ROM's themselves probably won't, but if you change versions of MAME, the high scores and save states most likely won't work with any other version with what you already had. If you're not changing MAME versions though, there'd be no reason to replace them with newer ones.

I probably should have made this clearer before:  I am already using the newest version of mame with an old set of roms ( .83).  I will not be upgrading my MAME program as it is up to date.  What I am updating is just my roms, because they are old and need to match the current version of mame.

But I really don't want to replace all the roms unless I know I am not going to erase my high scores.  So is there a consensus that replacing my roms with not erase my save states or high scores?

if you say the GAME/ROM is ruuning with no problem, then there was NO CHANGE at all since .83 to a newer set.

ROMS don't change.

Only time it changes is when REDUMPED, RE-NAME, REMOVE etc.... occurs.

But if the GAME you say runs, then there really is no point of updating that ROM (theres was NO changed).

well i do want to update files because say of the 8k games there are, only about 1500-1700 show, so it looks like some of the older roms are not compatible, which is why I want to update my roms.

RULE of thumb is if you use a newer MAME, you should update the ROMS to the same version.

Using an old set for a newer MAME, will make some/lots of GAME INCOMPATIBLE (not work).

Hi-Score is REMOVED in the newer MAME, it uses save states.

If you want hi-score support, need to use an un-official version of MAME or Compile one yourself with the Hi-score support.

Good Luck.

which goes back to my original question.  If I replace the old roms with the new ones, will it erase the save states which would mean erasing my scores?

thanks!

Your save states remain intact.

NP

kep in mind that if the ROM(s) has been renamed (specially filename wise), Save States is invalid.
