Alternative Light Gun for Mame?

This sounds like a great gun for mame, and looks pretty cool too, has anyone used it?

I have a hard time believing that this wouldn't work in MAME...
Unfortunately I don't have $43 to prove it... ($30 + 13 shipping)

It says it functions as a mouse (just like the Act-Labs gun) and it even hooks up in a similar way (VGA adapter between the monitor & PC)...

I would much rather use this gun than the crappy looking Act-Labs <said like Marvin the Matian> "m32 hand-held space modulatorrrr"

But until somebody with the money & time to test it out does so, I'm not going to be buying it.

<edit>
on a side note:
They go so far as to pose the question:
Quote
Does this gun support/work for MAME games?
But instead of saying "YES" they say MAME supports light guns...  They took the politicians approach... I'll answer your question by stating an obvious fact that, while related, doesn't answer your question...

UHG!!!!

I found the manufactor website and it says it works with Mame

The following FAQs are in our database for: PC Bio Gun

What screen resolution will the gun work with? (2002-04-16)
The gun should work at any resolution as it includes a VGA card adapter that interfaces with the gun and the PC. (2002-04-19)
Does this gun support/work for MAME games? What does the PC detect it as? (2002-07-31)
Mame32 v.61 and later support PC light guns. To enable light gun support, go to Options -> Default Options -> Controllers -> check the "enable lightgun input" box.

(2002-12-04)
Will this gun work on a Television (TV OUT) or only a CRT Monitor. I know the ACT Labs gun will only work on a CRT Monitor. (2002-12-18)
This gun will not work on the tv out of your pc. it will only work on your monitor, since your pc cannot register any shots fired at the tv.

(2002-12-18)
Does this gun fuction as a mouse or a joystick? (2003-02-06)
This gun functions as a mouse. (2003-04-19)

Can you use 2 light guns on the same pc and use them to play MAME? (2003-04-12)
Actually you can but the thing is the program you intend to use it for must support light gun support for multiple players... (2003-04-22)

In all of that long winded FAQ, they still never say "YES, it will work in MAME"...

Personally I think this is an ugly gun, too - all in grey!  :-X
At least better then the Act-Labs.

Look at the picture below, there was a thread here some weeks ago. (Use the search-button)

Unfortunately we still don't know if it would work with two guns/two players. I don't want a single-player gun, especially not for HOTD2!  :o

By the way - liked the review! (that was the thread I was referring to)

Still have the issue if two guns would work with HOTD2 :(
I guess it should, but as I'd have to import them from LilSang to Germany, I wouldn't like to take the risk that it don't.

Damn, I can't find any local store where I can order them - here I'd have the gurantee to return it in 2 weeks and get my money back if it doesn't work out!

One thing I forgot to mention. This gun is PS/2 based, that means you do not need USB support. That means it may work for DOS!

How about this gun?

It's said to work as a mouse.  Wouldn't that work in Mame?

I believe this gun (PC Virtual Gun) would work with two players if using MAME: Analog+ and Win98, as it behaves like a mouse  (like the ActLabs gun does).   There is a development underway to make this work in WinXP as well, see the "Raw Input" thread in the software forum.  I doubt the PC Bio Gun would work with two players as it is PS2 based.

Rampy,

If you don't mind me asking,  what is it that you don't like about the PC Virtual Gun?  Is it accuracy issues, or the fact it only supports 640X480?  I like the look of it much better than the ActLabs one.  I don't have either, and I'm trying to determine which to get (or even wait for something better, I might have to pick up a copy of Wired and see.)

I went ahead and bought 2 sets of both guns.  The PC bio gun is a pos.  It has 3 settings, turbo, turbo and turbo.....it makes no sence.  There is a solenoid in the gun that rattles when you shoot, but it acts like turbo no matter what setting it's on.  The only difference is that it does not auto-reload on one of the settings and it does on the other two....if that makes any sense.  The other thing is that it has to hook to both your keyboard and mouse port as well as the VGA port.  They say that you can use 2 of these guns at the same time, but I don't see how.  The other draw back is that it has 3 settings on the main box that everything plugs into.  One setting will let you use the gun only, the next setting is for the gun and keyboard only and the last setting is the mouse and keyboard only....ANNOYING!  Also, there is no way to calibrate and both guns were off by a mile in 640x480 mode...horrible gun!

The PC virtual gun is pretty cool.  It comes with a silent scope sticker on the side.  It actually cocks like a real gun (not that it does anything just a cool feature).  It is light and plasticy feeling just like the Act labs gun.  It comes with a foot pedal that I never used as well. (connects through a phone cord in the base of the handle).  I put both of the guns on at the same time and tried to play Zero Point 2...it workedbut not that well.  IT has two options, regular and autofire.  This is deffinately the better gun of the two, but probably even with the act labs gun.

Hope this helps! ;-)

But you haven't tried two of the same kind (e.g. two virtual guns), have you? There might be a good chance that they would work better.

My second concern is however, that I don't even know if HOTD2 even supports 2 lightguns. There is a lightgun-option, but of course I couldn't try it out as I've none.

Rampy,  I browsed through the latest Wired magazine (Oct 2003) at the local grocery store and found some new light gun references (on page 90), but they for the PS2, not the PC.   Are you sure they were PC light guns?  If so, what page/issue are they in.

How about just taking the Act-Labs guns apart and transplanting the guts into Happ arcade gun shells?

Thats a great idea, I'm still surprised someone hasn't come up with an interface for the Happ Guns.

The guys from actlabs where all for it and talked about how to do it a long long time ago.

He also mentioned some companies who produce real look/feel replicas that you should be able to hack it into.

Search the archive and you will probably find some.

I actually don't mind the Act-Lab guns.  The real arcade guns can start to feel REALLY heavy after a long play session!

I painted the removable pieces with mettalic automotive touch-up paint to tell player 1 and 2 apart, and I think they look quite cool:

Hey Chris!

As you have two guns - ever tried if HOTD2 works with two players?

The transplanting idea doesn't sound that bad - any idea where I get some good looking replicas? Though I guess I shouldn't import such stuff! ;D

HOTD2 only allows a gun to be configured for Player 1.  I don't remember if it'll accept a mouse as the second input; if so, it might be coaxed into working... I'll look at it.

why don't we try to take a regular PS1 or PS/2 gun and hack it to work with the PC?? I'm sure it wouldn't be that difficult to do..

Anyone tried it?
