when trying to build a multi touch a few years ago, I took apart a lcd, and one thing led to another, I destroyed it (worked great until I tried to fix up a few things.
But one thing to try is to take apart a cheap lcd and bend the (slightly) the top (or side, which ever doesn't have the connector attached). Then cut down all the other layers and put it on the bottom half. The top half will probably stop working (no big deal) but you can get where only 1/2 is working. Trouble would be getting the software to put the marquee just on the bottom (and mounting it).
Anyway, it might be a fun project for someone with a cheap LCD they aren't using. My only one left already has a project tagged to it.
The other idea could be a micro projector (200 bucks these days right?) and a back lit screen. I'm not sure how good they are, but if they can't handle the situation where they are inside a wood box... when are they useful?
