Wuss Alert - I get wonky from some games
« on: November 09, 2011, 09:31:10 pm »
So I was playing Driven (GameCube) the other day - close-up on a 29" monitor in a cab.  After a few minutes, I had a splitting headache.  It lasted all night and into the next morning.  That doesn't leave me feeling very manly.  The advent of 3D games and even some 2D games where the background and foreground move independently made it so that every once in a while, gaming gave me headaches or made me feel a little wonky.  In fact a couple of months ago, I wrote about it on my blog.... (and there's a poll there now to indicate if it happens to you)...

http://mamezach.blogspot.com/2011/09/ecco-dolphin-syndrome.html

But, my poll notwithstanding, anecdotal evidence here would be much more fun to read... So, has a game ever made you feel crappy or even nauseated?  Be a man and admit it here.

Mario Galaxy did it to me the first time I played... And anything on the Virtua Boy.

Games don't bother me too bad but I don't like watching 3D movies for this reason.

I can't play or watch any first person shooters. Instant nausea. The immersive 3d Aladdin ride at Disney Quest made me so ill after less than a couple of minutes that I had to rip off the head gear or vomit, and I was sick for the next 3 hours. Miserable.

Funny, I can play racing games, but I can't watch someone else play.

Lots of people are like that. I had a friend that could play Doom and Quake all day long, but have him stand over my shoulder and watch me play, instant upchuck.

I'm a little that way with cars. I love driving and driving games, but if I'm in the passenger seat, it takes some effort to keep from getting nauseated.

But games, never had any issues with (although Descent screwed with my brain for about the first 2 months I played it).

I watched my brother play F.E.A.R. and got pretty sick...  I had to leave the room, and didn't feel right for a few hours.

I can play the game with no issues, just can't watch someone else.

Ha!  Wasn't Descent awesome with that?  It took a while to get used to but it was a blast flying, being inverted, getting lost, etc?  I loved that.   :cheers:

I think when people watch a FPS, they get queasy pretty easily because they aren't controlling the movement.  When you play, you know where you're going move, look, spin, etc.  Watching it, it's too random and more herky jerky.  At least, that's what affects me.

@Hoopz

Yeah, descent is one I really wish some brave soul would perform the "DukeNukem Remix" on and put out with HD graphics and native windows ui.

Unfortunately, while I may be brave enough, my lack of free time (and likely my game coding skillz) prevent me from doing it.

Doh. Looks like there might already be something out there

Just may have to check that out...

Playing/Watching an FPS is a quick way to nausea.  However, way back, I could play Unreal Tournament for hours without problems - not sure what made that one so special, but it was my favourite game for while for that reason.

Watching a friend play Spyro the dragon, running around not knowing what to do, always sent me straight to bed.
Playing Duke Nukem Forever...damn those blurry tunnels...

Anybody watch The Guild?  They joked about this, she played a MMORPG all day, but couldn't watch someone play a FPS

i love FPS, but every once in a while or after long day at work, i can't even last 5 minutes! and it puts me out of commission for a while and can become a migraine really easy.

i used to never be able to play halo when it first came out for the same reasons, and most sonic titles on dreamcast are nightmares..

i remember the first time playing wolfenstien 3d back on my PC in the 90s and dreaming of rushing down hallways and getting a huge head ache every day for a while until i got used to it.

Glad to see I/we aren't alone in this wussiness ;D  I used to play Unreal Tournament for hours when I was mid-late twenties.  I'm forty now, and the nausea induced by any FPS is insane.  Insta-wretch: any Tony Hawk.  Could it be an age thing?  Anybody under 25 experiencing this?

I loved playing Descent.  I'll have to check this out or see if the Descent 1 and 2 is possible to play on newer OSes.  Would love to work my way through that game or see how well it holds up

I loved me some Descent action, that game never got me nauseated though. Mario Galaxy however...  :puke When I got my first PC back in 1996 it came with a game called Magic Carpet, where you cruise around collecting orbs and what not. That used to make me want to barf almost instantly.

I used to get nauseated in rocking chairs when I was younger...  ::)
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Me too.  right hand on the logitech wingman, left on the kb zooming forwards and back.  I would love to give it a try these days with my new flight stick with twist and some headphones.  However, is there a version that's good for pc/XP/win 7?  seems like when I tried it a few years ago it didn't run well in a dos window.

For Descent on newer machines check out www.gog.com

Descent 1 & 2 --> http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/descent_1_descent_2

Descent 3 --> http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/descent_3_expansion

Loved the multiplayer back in the day.

I think there is a direct 3d wrapper somewhere, making usable some of the newer stereoscopic setups for Descent...   Mario Galaxy got me a little bit, and so did a few of the maneuvers in Portal 1&2.  I can play first person games all day but get dizzy riding shotgun on some of the faster games.

FPS don't usually bother me when playing or watching but Mirrors Edge was simply too much. Played for about 5mins, turned it off, then fell over when I tried to stand up.

For sure the Guitar Hero games mess up your eyesight.  As for other games Any third person game where you control the camera, if you set your camera above the character so its looking down at them, then run the character round in a tight circle clockwise whilst rotating the camera anti clockwise. I did this in one of the POP games and had to run to the toilet instantly.  Not going to be trying that again any time soon. Also I cannot watch others playing games,  Headache starts after about 20 minutes.  I am also well past 25 so maybe age really does have something to do with it.

I'm fine with all video games, but can't watch Diners, Drive-ins and Dives with the volume off.  (at night when kids falling asleep)
The camera constantly zooms and quickly changes to another camera view that does the same.  Pisses me off and gives me a headache.  Just show the f'n food.

Still playing Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory (it's free, ya know) weekly with a core group after 8 years, on this server:

One of my favorite games ever  :D
