Ideas for a one-game-only cab
« on: September 25, 2011, 11:39:13 am »
I am thinking of building a dedicated upright, but to make it play only one game and that game must not have been released in the arcades.

At the moment I am looking at Team 17's Project X - Like wiki says, I never got past level two!

Any better ideas? Any era / style / orientation considered.

Cheers  ;D

Well, if you wanted to go the Xbox route, Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim are the natural evolution of the classic beat um ups. Pac Man CE: DX certainly deserves its own cab. If it already weren't part of the Winnitron project, I would suggest Super Crate Box. And Rom Check Fail in a cabinet would be hilarious, if not too practical. As far as Arcade-like early games that were not arcade ports, River Raid might be the most deserving in my opinion.

Currently I'm trying to program my own game for a dedicated cab... we will see how that goes.  :P
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

I would love to program something dedicated. I remember about 20 years ago my mate's Dad made a platform game on PC. I don't know what code format, and it was pretty hoop, but nevertheless I think that would be great.

River raid! Shiiiiite not played that in a very long time. My cousin and i used to alternate between that on the 2600 and making spaceships out of dining room furniture  ::)

There's a lot of stuff out there now:

Geometry Wars
Grid Wars
Space Giraffe
Space Invaders Extreme
Gridrunner Revolution

There are a lot of console puzzle and shmup games that could be made into a cab.

R-Type III
Tetris Attack

+1 for typhoon 2001 and Geometry Wars.

I thought the GridWars version was cool, till I came across the actual geometry wars for PC. Wow. I'd love to get the later versions as well, but looks like they're only for Xbox  :(

Platypus is also available for PC.   The shooter is done in claymation, and its brilliant.  Great gameplay, excellent 2 player action. Great retro-64 soundtracks.

I experienced TFII on the Sega Genesis (I think it can be player ok in mame now)... and it has become my top Fav. shooter of all time.  Unlike other shooters, TFII is much more balanced and enjoyable.  They dont put you back in a level when you die... so you can actually crash and keep playing (until you run out of lives).   Yet, there are a set number of continues, which forces you to get better if you ever want to see the end.

I must admit, the Top view stages are not as fun / good as the sideview stages.. and that was its main complaint.  However, I still found them a nice challenge and change of pace.  Your bombs only reach so far, so you have to get very close before they will be able to destroy ground targets. Its something I didnt figure out till late in my experience, as I never read the manual.

Took me about a yr of off and on play to beat it, and I still enjoy the game to this day.  The music and sound fx are out of this world awesome.  Theres also a level select on the Gen version.. but limited to the 1st few levels only.

Ive found out that theres another version for the X68000 computer.  I have to say, its Awesome.  More levels, better sound quality, more detail and layers in the graphics.  I vow to one day try to beat this, from start to finish...

BS, is a Great Amiga 2p shootemup.  Its one of those games you feel like could have been in the arcades.  Very polished, great GFX, good sounds, fun.. and very difficult.  Its got similarities to Raiden... but IMOP, is a much better game all around.  The underground sections are super hard.. so be prepared for a real challenge... even if fully powered up.

You can continue forever above-ground.. however, once you enter the underground areas, if you lose all your lives, its game-over.  Its so much better than the quarter-muncher "pay to win" shooters.

An older 1 to 4 player race car game for the PC.  The graphics are top notch, and the gameplay is even more fun and challenging than it looks.  Me and my buddy would play this game for Hours at a time.  You giggle with glee as you destroy other cars.. and fret and sweat as other cars tail you, that can shoot you at any time.

Winning = cash = buy upgrades & new cars.  The later cars can get fast as hell, and they also have more weapons capabilities.

On occasion, the game would get garbled graphically on my older Pc.  I remember there was a way to get it back to normal.. so it isnt a deal breaker.  Just a warning.

This ultra hard game is a masterpiece.  Its like a Japanese animation come to life.  You control a Mech suit.. and load up on whichever weapons you have available... limited to how many you can carry. (must choose wisely)    I swear I died for 1hr straight trying to beat level 1... yet loved every minute of it.  Your life bar can regenerate... but it takes time and zero conflict.. which makes it difficult, considering the furry of the enemies.

The graphics are good, and the sounds are Epic.   The mech has excellent and realistic controls.  The weapons you get are very fun... and realistic, as you can even damage yourself with them.   You even get help from your mech trooper friends at times.

The storyline is great as well.  With small intermission animations which unfold as the story is revealed.

The gameplay itself changes from each level vastly.  Some levels you are in space for example.. so no jumping.. you fly around instead.   And in each level there may specific goals... for example, protecting the mothership while waiting for your guys to enter it... trying to wait as long as possible.

The biggest downfall is the difficulty.  Theres an infinite energy cheat.  On its own, Im not sure I could ever beat it without that cheat... although, I did get quite deep into the game trying.

I imagine it would be really cool to make a version of this game in a cab which has a harness you strap yourself into... and when you jump, the game lifts you up (or you jump yourself, and the weighted harness arm helps keep you up in the air longer).

Recoil guns and or bass-shakers could be used as well.

Seeing how Mortal Kombat Trilogy never saw its much deserved release in arcades, that seems like a good choice.

Fallout 3 !

OK, it's far from arcade controls friendly but the theme and design you could build around it would be cool.

I hadn't really thought about a modern title, but there is one modern RPG with very simple controls and art design that would transfer well to a cab.

This is a great topic, with many, many choices.

The first choice is what system to use? PC. XBox 360. PS2/3. Wii, etc.

The second is what type of game you prefer.

If you are looking for a dedicated fighter, I have two suggestions:

1) Use either a PC w/the Dophin emulator or a Wii, and go for a Super Smash Bros Brawl cab.

2) Use an XBox 360 or PS3 and build a Street Fighter II HD Remix cab.

If you want to use a PC and are into brawlers, then you could go for a Streets of Rage Remake cab.

If you like kickass shooters, then a Warning Forever, Every Exetend (PC original), TUMIKI Fighters, or Fraxy cab would be most excellent choices.

In particular, I think Warning Forever would rock, as it has the perfect arcade aesthetic, the music is user-configurable, and only requires 3 buttons total to play. It's also free, so you can check it out on your own computer if you want.

There is one more choice you might want to consider - it's a doujin SHMUP that *almost* made it into the arcades. It's called Exception, and it is an extremely cool game. It does, however, need a fast CPU and a good graphics card. Still, next to Warning Forever, I can't think of a game that has a better (and unique) arcade esthetic.

Incidently, you can find videos of all of my PC suggestions on YouTube.

Good luck!

Is there a PC version of this?  I agree it's a great game, one of the only great games on the PSP in fact.  :laugh2:

There's not a PC version, but there is an Xbox live arcade version.

If you were really determined though it wouldn't be that hard to get the PSP version up and running in a cab.
