What are the good games that use 2 8-way sticks?
« on: January 28, 2011, 12:30:46 pm »
I'm debating using 2 8-way Wico's I just bought from a member of this forum to build a dedicated control panel for games that use 2 sticks and no buttons, but I can't think of too many "good" games that would benefit from such a setup.

Here's what I'm coming up with:

Robotron
Crazy Climber
Black Widow
SmashTV (1 player only...)

Are there more games with this config that are decent games?

Also, are there any 2-player/1x8-way per player games that don't use buttons?  I can't think of any, but maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks very much,
Ryan

RomLister can answer all of these questions.  MAWS works too if you don't want to install anything.

Yeah, I'm familiar with RomLister, I guess I'm just asking if there are games that are pretty good that I may not have played or have forgotten about versus strictly just the ones that will work, more of a "what games do you like that fit this criteria" sort of question.

Might as well drop at least one button on the panel for Total Carnage too.   ;D

Talking about two joystick games demands one on the greatest to be on the list - Karate Champ!!

Note: Maybe I was to fast.... didn't read the "8-way" part of the first post. Sorry.

Rescue uses two joysticks but it also has one button for bombs

I guess you can also use two 8 ways to play some other games.
like for instance a game like 1942, you can make the left joystick be your regular control stick while using the right joystick for shoot and loop, like maybe up for shoot and down for loop.
It could make gameplay a little confusing but it would add some games to your list.

Just out of curiousity, why no buttons?

I'm going to have many panels, my goal is to have no redundant buttons on any single panel.  I guess it's a bit of an opposite extreme from my 40" wide 4-player/trackball/4-way/8-way firetop/spinner panel I just retired.  I find, since I've started collecting dedicated games recently, that less can be more.  When I have people over, I want to just set my MAME up on 1 game for the whole night, which means less time messing around with changing games, telling people what button does what, etc.  It was an eye-opener when people tended to play my Turbo game more than my MAME, mostly because for anyone who's not into it, a frankenMAME is very intimidating to walk up to and try to use.  Having only the relevant controls available on any given game will make it much more approachable I think.

Right now I have 2 panels built, a Tron panel (with an original stick...  Nice!) and a 4-way 2-button panel (using the GGG leaf buttons, man those things are awesome).  So far the only game I've played that actually uses both buttons is Qix, but on the single-button games like DK, etc, I just programmed both buttons to jump.

I think I'll go forward and commit my 2 Wico leaf sticks to this panel.  Even if it's only used for Robotron, I guess I love that game enough to make it worth such nice controls.  Some of the other games mentioned look pretty good too.  Also, I think Tapper will be playable with this setup as well.

Thanks for the suggestions!
Ryan

SDI and Libble Rabble are pretty neat

SDI is a stick + trackball IIRC, you don't really get the movement speed with twin sticks.

Sega's Bullet is another to add to the list.. pretty obscure (and only emulated PROPERLY as of the latest MAME u release due to a rom error with the decryption key in earlier versions)

I think some of the unknown dipswitches control difficulty tho, it's seems very easy at the moment.

(it cost MameDev over $2000 to get hold of this, just to fix an error in the key.  It's more or less a prototype, and the key is battery backed in a suicide module, so getting it was important!)

I thought that strange football/pinbal-like game was a sequel to Smash TV.

Total Carnage is a lemon.
