yeah, ebay and roms..  this one auction gave me the impression.  the guy had 5k game titles he bought the rights too ( his sales pitch would make you believe). I was thinking he would have some random stuff. so i thought.. i dunno what i was thinking i guess..  anyhow, so i bid 12.00 and won.. then turns out i bought the web address to a popular rom webpage.. you know rom google would find for you. hah.  the guy returned my money no questions asked.. but dang. i felt dumb.  be careful guys with ebay.  iv only been ripped off three times on ebay..  but..  it sucks just being ripped off once.  I also hate  listings that are miss leading.. and unless you ask exact questions you get taken.  had that happen too.  but that was my own fault i just assumed..

Years ago somebody put up an auction for an Xboxes photo at a time when you couldn't find an Xboxes in any store. The entire auction was worded in such a way that gave anyone the impression the Xboxes was the item. If you read all the way to the bottom, there was a small blurb clarifying the auction was actually for the guys photo of his Xbox. By that time the auction was already $800 or so. I emailed every one of the bidders with a reference to the blurb and sent a message to eBay about it. Nearly every one withdrew their bids bit eBay allowed the auction to continue because of the blurb at the very bottom of the page where no one would actually read it. The auction ended at less than a hundred but still......

Hey, I'm just wondering, but is it even possible to EVER sell that stuff legally? I mean, is it possible to buy rights to sell roms? Where would one go to? I know many of you guys make a veryvery big deal out of the illegal sale of roms, but is there an alternative?

If you look at it from the other side, sales like this could introduce many, many new members to this community and this wonderful hobby. I for one have a bunch of friends that would LOVE to get involved in it, that have the know-how and drive to build a cabinet, but just can't work with any computers/software. A DVD-set like this would help them, and many others, greatly. I know that there's ethics too, but as I read many times on this board, what harm is there in selling games that nobody will ever commercialize again?

I'm sorry if I upset anybody with this comment, and it is CERTAINLY not my intention on making this yet another 10-page ranting topic, but I've always wondered... Why all this hostility?

Because once someone starts making money off them, the original copyright holders will have a rea$on to pur$ue them (and also MAMEdev).
Then it would be GAME OVER for everyone.  Right now, it doesn't make much $en$e for them to bother with it.

The seller's disclaimer is kind of funny.  Makes me want to list a DVD set full of classic MP3s with the same disclaimer.
(and imagine how much I'll be helping the bands by spreading their music to new listeners)

I reported it as him selling copyrighted material on backup media.

This conversation comes up time and time again.  People will believe what they believe and think that it is right, only because it is what they believe.
Supporting evidence doesn't really come into play.  I haven't seen anyone change their mind.

makes you wonder what kind of person who knows he is ripping you off.. how can they sleep at night.  shrugs.. obv someone i want nothing to do with,  just wonder how they can make it ok in there head to do so.  shrugs.  maybe me growing up in a small town  where everyone knows what girl you are sleeping with on Friday makes me care.

what iv notice about roms and ebay.. most of the mame rom dvds being sold are always listed on the uk side and never complete sets. just one dvd or two.   not sure if they have different rules. but they always have at least 10 listings for mame dvds

Not gonna get involved in a flame war about selling roms you have no right to etc.etc.  But just take a look at the bottom of this very page and there is a link to Mame.140 "backup" roms. I don't hear any concerted calls to Saint to stop that link. Where is the line drawn/crossed?

I'd say the line is drawn when profit is involved.

I see a random ad each time.  Last night it was donuts.  This morning it's BMW.
I don't remember ever seeing an ad for roms there, but it would make sense that Google
(or whatever advertising program) would place it there since roms are discussed on this
board.  This is how you end up with all the funny ironic ad placements.....

I'll do a screen capture if I ever see roms advertised.

Sadly if it's anything like as bad as when there were ads on the old mame.net you'll find these people as scummy as they are dishonest.

As soon as the links gets banned they just adjust the url slightly, and bang, it's back.  Sadly they do make a lot of money out of this kind of thing, especially on 'prime' sites, that's why it's worth their effort.

We resorted to just reporting several of them to their web hosts instead, and given that it was them in breach of contract, I doubt they got their money back when their hosting was canceled.

After this I ended up quite often getting emails from these people, asking if they could pay a (rather significant) monthly sum to have their ads on my site etc.

If you got an email as full of BS as that auction you'd call it spam, nothing more.

I recently had a reset on my ad filters with Google and so started from scratch on filters, but at the height I had something like 20 different advertisers blocked. Haze is right, it's a constant catch-up game.

Well the ad is not there anymore. There is only one ad there now (as I type this) and it's for Ultimarc. But last night there were definitely three ads and one of them was a direct link to a Mame.140 rom "backup" site in the UK. I know which site it was but ofc I cannot post that here.

Dunno about that,

Got a cabinet maker here that is selling cabs with 750 games.

Cannot be bothered screen grabbing, hosting the pic, etc.

I like the cocktail though...

If an ad or a seller here is selling illegal property I need to know so I can remove it from the site. If I don't know about it I can't do anything about it. You can PM me if you know of one.

Well, that'll be 99% of the Buy/Sell/Trade posts deleted...

I haven't seen any illegal items for sale in B/S/T.  Definitely not anywhere near 99%.
