4 player cabinet and 4 player vs 2 player roms
« on: November 27, 2010, 11:29:50 pm »
well, i recently switched from a 2 player panel to a 4 player panel and i'm working on getting my gamelist revised.  i have gone through and replaced the 2player roms of some of the games with the 4 player version, which is working pretty well.  however i noticed that in most games, i lost the ability to select my character.  it's not that big of a deal, i setup my panel to color match the TMNT characters, in the proper positions, so that my 3 year old knows that if he wants to be raphael, he needs to go to the player 4 location where the red buttons are.  this is working well....however in some games, the default character setup sucks.  normally when playing games, it is just my 3 year old, and I playing.  i am always at the player 1 spot, so i can control the front end, and my son as at player 2.  however in sunset riders for instance, we always get stuck with the pistol guys, instead of the shotgun guys that we want.  normally my panel is wired up so that players 3 and 4 are on the outside, like this:

3 1 2 4 (purple, blue, orange, red)

so today i remapped that game so that it is 1 3 4 2, which puts the two shotgun guys in the middle, and the pistol guys on the outsides.  other than the obvious player designation on screen not matching what i know in my head is the player layout of the panel, is there any downside to doing this?

i also did the same thing with Captain America and the Avengers.  player 1 is mapped to that stupid yellow guy, while p2 is ironman, p3 is captain america, and p4 is hawkeye.  i want to be at the main p1 controls for obvious reasons, but i hate being that stupid yellow guy.  so i set it up as:

4 3 2 1

that puts hawkeye with the purple buttons, captain america with the blue, ironman with the orange, and the stupid guy with red...for color matching purposes, i should have put ironman with the red buttons, but since my son loves ironman and is normally at the orange buttons, i made an exception.

i havent really seen any problems come up by doing this, so i figured i'd post this here, because it may inspire someone else.

also, while we are on the subject, what are the good 4 player games that are a must have?  I have some of the more popular ones, but i want to make sure there aren't any that i am overlooking.  i don't get the opportunity to play alot with 4 people, but it happens occasionaly, and will happen more once my other son is a little older. (he will be two next month) so i want to be prepared.
