Bypassing coin slot??
« on: August 11, 2010, 01:15:38 pm »
Hi guys

My count slot ha been a pain in the butt recently and I am wanting to bypass it so I can play my mame games again.  When I drop the coin in it's not recognizing it suddenly.  Never was an issue till now.  If anyone can give me some pointers on what to do that would be awesome

Thanks!!

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

Check the switch to see if it works and replace if not

Wire a button that gives you a credit instead
or
Rig a microswitch behind the coin reject, press it to give credit
or
Check if the games you play the most allow free play

I'm betting the metal arm on the coin switch is bent and the coins just go right by. Look at the bottom of the coin mech and see if the coins are triggering anything as they pass through, and if not bend the arm into the path of the coins.

This should be an easy fix - open the coin door, drop a coin in and watch it pass the microswitch.  If the coin isn't hitting the arm just bend it back into place.  I'd rig the coin return button so you aren't constantly digging around for quarters.

nope they are both hitting the tiny little metal arm on both coin clots are hitting it as they go by.  I'm very new to this so I'm wondering what the next step is.  All my games i have so far have to insert coins

next steps?  I thought i had it fixed because one of them the arm was out but i put it back and neither of them work.

make sure that there is wire running from the microswitch on the coin mech into the encoder or jamma harness or whatever else. basically just make sure that there are two wires coming from the switch and both are hooked up to something.

Take a short piece of wire and touch it to two of the terminals on one of the switches. Touch it to the terminals that already have wires connected. The idea is to "short" these two terminals. If a credit registers on the game, then the switch is bad. To double check, move the actuator (bent wire that the coin moves) all the way down with your finger, see if a credit registers.
If credit dont register by shorting out the switch, then the problem is in the wiring. Double check for a loose plug somewhere.

If tests show that the coin switches are good, then look into your button settings in mame (tab).
I recently worked on someones mame cab that all of sudden stop working. it turned out that his mame setting weren't pointing to his coin switches.
I think one his kids may have accidently reset them. His cab didnt have an Ipac though, it had hacked usb game pads.

Are you using an IPAC (P1 start +P1 button one) ?
