How would you solder this board? (usb hack)
« on: June 30, 2010, 08:45:36 am »
Hello
I got a pc usb stick torn apart, and looking to hack it. There is two pieces, the main board (brown) has 8 buttons and attaches to the joystick then there is addon board with other buttons.  I think I get the larger board, I am only assuming i am right.  The larger solder spots are for each button, I am guessing that all I would have to do is solder two wires to the back of each button?

The smaller board I am not sure.. what to solder too.. (my first try at this usb hack)

If anyone could take a few mins too explain simple hacking and maybe show me on my pics where/what to solder I would appreciate it.  I should let you know that I have successfully hacked my first stick yesterday!! Hacked a flight stick, however after I got it all done there just is not enough buttons (5+joystick).  So I am going to try this.  I guess I could make a simple 3 button panel with the joystick......

I attached photos too... hopefully someone can help me out...

thanks in advance and as always much appreciated!

Jim

For the Adsaptor for extra buttons, you have FIVE wires
One of each if for a Button and the ONE COMMON WIRE will be Ground.
Use a Multimeter and see which is which.

GROUND is GROUND. On PCB, there are usually many GROUND points. You could use any one.

I suggest you use a Multimeter to make sure what you see is what it is.

Which ever wire goes to more then one connection is the ground wire.  All the others are one for a button.  Follow the traces on the board.
