Weird find
« on: June 09, 2010, 03:11:03 pm »
I tore the side art off my Run N Gun to make my MAME and I found some strange lettering.  After a minute or two, I figured it said 2084 or something.  After some research, I found this.

If the cabinet shape was altered to fit the 4-player CP, is it possible that my cab used to be a Robotron cab?  That would explain why the think looks so old on the inside.

Is it possible? Yes. Is it smart to try to make it 4 player out of that machine? No.

I'm not asking if it would be smart for me to do it, I'm asking if it's possible that someone at some point converted the machine from one game to another and why would they do that instead of just building another cabinet?  I'm new to the world of MAMEing.

it done all the time. Why convert one to another ? Maybe that machine was not amking no money anymore and IN goes a different game by just swaping PCB's.

Mine was a Start Trek Converted into Commando then into Skyshark

Others I've seen:
Tempest converted to Figthing Game
Tron into 1941

etc...

Thanks Thenasty.  I didn't know this was common.  Maybe it's not such a weird find then.  I appreciate the info.

myty, The sides of the cab were cut in a weird shape to accomodate the Run & Gun CP and the 2084 side art was painted over in black before the vinyl went on so I doubt it could be restored without some serious work.  I could barely make out the sideart at all let alone the oddball font.

Which leads me to another question, if a sideart is painted over in black, how would one go about removing the black, but not the art?  My friend just bought an X-Men cab that someone painted black over the side art.

They did this all of the time, remember these were not "collector items" in the 80's, they served only one purpose, to make as many quarters as possible. You want bad conversions, I've got a Tron that was converted half heartedly into a 1942 with a Tron flightstick :(

That cant be real! That such a waste of memories, they should have a shelter for those unwanted cabs to be picked up for free. So Sad

And the Pole Position to World Rally was an upgrade. Probably much more reliable!
