Old Versions of Mame HW requirements?
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:32:18 am »
Hello
I am looking at scoring some used computers and monitors. I was thinking of building cabinets out of them. Just wondered what older versions of mame can run on lower pcs? I recall running mortal kombat at full speed on a 700 mhz athlon years ago... let me know

thanks
Jim

If you're not running 3d stuff or CHDs, you can use almost any PC really unless we're talking ancient. I had a 1.4 GHZ Pentium and all 2d stuff ran fine on MAME 0.85 for me - except for some of the Midway games like MK, MK2, MK3, UMK3, NBA Jam, and Rampage: World Tour. For those games I used Fastmame 0.71 and they ran fine.

I could even get KI and KI2 running full speed if I used the U64 emu.

The caveat of course is that emulation will not be as accurate using older versions of MAME or alternate emulators. That may or may not bother you.

It really depends on what games you want to play - if you're set on playing the aforementioned Midway games, you probably shouldn't go with something really weak. If all you want to play is classics, almost anything will work.

I had an old crappy Celeron 500 Mhz with 64 MB of ram and I had games running full speed using MAME 0.56. I even had MK3 running full speed with the sound disabled, so a little bit better machine probably could have run it full speed with sound on that MAME version.

If you could give us an idea of specs of the PCs that you're looking at, I'm sure there are people here who could tell you what will run and what won't on it. :)

Hey
Ah .85 I see.. for some reason I recall .77 or .79 being very good... what was the last version they had before the update that required higher processors.?

Is there a way to find a list of games supported for each version? ie) I searched wwfwrestlefest support in mame. etc on google no luck to what version. Ok found this site  http://mamedev.org

it lists when the games were supported.....

also in regards to fastmame.... is there a list of compatible games/ processors required to run them?
thanks
Jim

I posted in your other thread that Emumovies has quite a bit of this type of content.  There are places that you can get snap, title, icon, pcb, etc collections, but I don't think they can be posted here if they also serve roms.

I'm running 0.37b7 (EEMAME) on my phone:lol
(Nokia N95 8GB, 330mhz processor)

The sound skips. The early 80's classics work pretty good.
By the time you get to the mid 80's, it gets slooooow.

That gives me some idea what I can expect. Now I just need some free parts! Any suggestions on how to get some older computers that people would throw out?

thx

Hello
I am having trouble finding old rom sets :( Found .36b which I know was good, but I would like a newer versions to see what each computer I haves limit is.

Is there a way to take a newer set of roms and use some software to roll it back? anyone advise?

thanks

Clrmamepro is the program to rollback a rom set.  You'll need not only your current rom set, but a set of rollback roms.  Clrmamepro is a little confusing so you may search for a tutorial.

Rollback roms are different than the old set.  The rollback roms contain all the changes through the years so you can take a new set and revert it back to ANY older set.  It's typically a large torrent.

Just search for them.  Whatever your pleasure (google, bing, etc), you can search for rom torrents.

the original pc i used for my cab was a PIII 666 oc at 750, 128mb ram, in dos.

as far as i can remember it ran most of the good 2d stuff at full speed (all neo geo, marvel vs capcom, etc)  with a few exceptions, NBA jam was always too slow and the big romsets like mslug3 took FOREVER to load (over 5 mins) and 3d games were out of the question.

but its still pretty damn sweet that u can run some awesome classics on hardware that belongs in the trash

I had to go with DOS MAME 0.78 on a 1ghz AMD to get most games running decent frame rates
0.55 for the Vectors to run fast enough (I don't know why the vectors run so much slower in 0.78)
NO MORE!!

Keep in mind that with older versions of MAME, the diff hacks (to remove nag screens) are not available.  I used MAME 0.36 DOS for a while, but there was no way to take off the nag screens (switches to remove them weren't introduced yet).  I ended up settling on MAME 0.85, since it supported Ms. Pacman (fast speed hack version), and it had the switches to remove the nag screens built in).  MAME 0.86 wouldn't run smoothly on my machine (Pentium II 400MHz).
