changing mame versions
« on: March 01, 2010, 02:04:02 pm »
hi guys, hope someone can help, been spending the last couple of hours trying to find out the exact answers to the following.

I upgraded my mame version from something like 0.60 -> latest 0.136 in order to get my light guns working, so i thought that would of been no issue..
I then found out neogeo games werent working, so after much googling..  i got the neogeo bios updated and jobs a good un..

i now noticed games like street fighter alpha arent working, so for instance sfa3 states:
C:\mamee>mame.exe sfa3
sz3e.03c NOT FOUND
sz3e.04c NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.

Now I believe from all this reading that these missing files are as a result of the upgrades made by mame, other than re downloading each and every rom I believe I need to do an update to the roms..
Ive been trying to follow "http://www.xente.mundo-r.com/mame/english/section3.html#s3-4" to basically use clrmamepro with the the 0.136 dat file i downloaded.
I then put 2 roms in the directory to see what happens, well it removed some stuff from the sfa3.zip, but it never added these needed files...

Am I correct in what i am trying to do ? if this is the case if there any decent how tos on how to basically update these roms so i can play them on the later version?

thanks guys

Sadly,  no,  that's not going to solve your problems.

As mame progresses,  older games often have files added to them as previously unemulated chips are emulated,  that make the emulation closer to perfect.  When doing a jump of around 60 releases,  there's going to be a huge amount of games that are missing files.  You won't have the files anywhere amongst your roms.  CLRMamePro works by trying to find the missing files in other roms,  which won't work with such a huge difference between versions.

What you have to do is update your roms,  pretty much all of them,  by downloading up to date ones.  Forum rules though,  no one can tell you where to look.  Good luck!  It's not as hard as it sounds.

Second that.  I've re-acquired full rom sets for much smaller jumps than that.  The time, effort, and just general PITA factor of trying to do a merge/update/etc. to save bandwidth just isn't worth it.  Just regrab everything (except CHDs...) :)

If Clrmame can do this, we don't need to download ROMS anymore :)

In order for your ROMS to be fixed by CLRMAME, the missing files must exist somewhere. Clrmame will rename, move, delete, Add (if exist) to the ZIPROMFILE file.

Actually,  if he was version .60,  he might not even have .chd's,  I don't remember if they existed then.  Even if they did,  there were at least 2 major revisions to the .chds that even chdman can't fix between then and now,  he'll still have to replace those too.  He's pretty much stuck with a full update I'm guessing.

I agree with you though,  I've done full updates for just 5 missed releases because it's such a PIA with merging,  can't begin to count the number of times I end up with crc failures merging and still have to redownload.

That and you basically have to get everything into the exact same format as the torrent you're using so...kind of pointless.  Just seed the ever living bejesus out of the torrent and you're good to go next time. :)
