You may be too into arcade games if...
« on: July 13, 2003, 10:06:14 pm »
I was down in the arcade at the movie theater the other night. Went in to check the games. Instead of finding one and playing it, though, I went to all the gun games, picked them out, and just checked out their guns. People probably thought I was pretty wierd. Maybe an odd gun fetish. I probably checked out like 4 or 5 gun games. (The namcos on Time Crisis 3 are my favorite.)

Then after the movie I went back into the arcade. I saw a Marvel vs Street Fighter so I figured I was give it a shot. I stepped up on the right and the opponent on my left didn't bother to tell me it was broken. He kinda laughed when I started putting in money (the bastard). Anyways, the joy only went in one direction. So what do you do? Naturally... you notice the CP is loose so I pop it right open and check the terminals on the joystick. The other guy though I was so wierd. I said "No wonder! The common ground is snapped and it's killing 3 switches.". The other guy was like "Uhhh... yeah." (the bastard)

IF you spend more time admiring side-art and the condition of original t-moulding than you do actually playing the game, you might be an arcade-head.

I should go back down there and offer to repair their MvsC for movie bucks! It would only take a couple minutes. (Movies are my second big time-killer.)

LOL, I do this TOO, so glad I'm not the only one.

While in the process of building my cab (almost done now) I visited my local Cinema, and bowling alley to do some reasearch about CP height, comfortable button layouts, cab depth, cp size etc. etc. etc.
Problem is, practically all I found at these places were ticket/redemption machines or DDR's, or sit down driving cabs, or those Jetski ones, or skiball... infact between the two (the ONLY places in my area with arcade games) I found TWO "real" arcade games... the cinema had a lonely, beatup, Bubble Bobble in a Low-boy Cab (which, for the sake of showing the cinema it CAN still make money, I played for about half an hour ;D), and the bowling alley had a small-end showcase cab with one of the soul callibur variants in it (and it had a cramp inducing button layout to boot)
I have never been more happy to be playing my part in keeping the "classic" arcade expeirience alive by building a cab.
I was revolted to find what the arcades have become. :'(

Dead on, not that there are any arcades around to speak of, but when you do see a gathering of a few arcade games there are usually more non-video games than video games. Sometimes you might not even have a video game in the group.

I was at the theater the other day and out of all the games there were NO video games other than the big rig driving games.

That's because for the same price as a high-end video game you can get 1-4 redemption or prize games that will suck down a buck a pop and are more tempting to the average passerby. The redemption games are the best (earnings-wise), especially if you can import cool prizes. Once someone is half-way to a plush morrigan that he couldn't get around there even if he TRIED, there's no stopping him from dropping another $20-$50 to make it happen.

LOL, actually I was more subtle... My Mobile Phone has a built in digital cam (Nokia 3650), so I took plenty of candid photos from all angles, placing my hand, or a friend, in the shot for scale.  ;D

A lot of times I go out to play games, and then get pissed off because the games in the arcade are not in as good of shape as the games in my house. All my games are 20+ years old, yet they seem to be in better shape than most of the stuff I see on location (Dave & Busters excluded).

That is more of a comment on the shape of the games in the arcades then it is on how nice my games are (except my Kangaroo, that one could hold its own against anything at Dave & Busters even).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

My one and only non-MAME game that I own is a KI2 and that thing is in really really great condition. I think it's like 7 or 8 years old so it's not as old as alot of other machines, but being in my posession it won't be getting any worse, either.

(Yes I know I'm starting to go off topic. I've got ADD. Leave me alone. I started this thread.)  :P

I find myself looking at paint and laminate finishes on office furniture a lot and checking how good the T-moulding is etc. He he my wife thinks I'm even weirder than I was --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- lol. Or I can't walk past a hardware store without going in and checking how much fluro tubes are, sad.

Yeah, I myself have started to geek out on things like Side art and stuff.  Like walking into an arcade and evaluating the look of Cabs, condition of control panels, etc...

Like I have no interest in playing a Galaxian Machine for more than a few minutes, but man I love looking at em :D

I think this is how classic car collectors get when they make "Trailer Queens"......

I was in a pool hall this weekend and I got to play one of the most interesting video games ever. No one was playing it as the place was pretty dead so I thought that I would find out what it was about.

You walk up to it and it is surrounded by a cage that is about 10' tall. Inside was a chair and about a 30" screen. On the screen, it said to lock the door. So I did. Then it wanted 75cents. Searched everwhere for it untill I noticed that it was behind the chair (really awfull place to put it) After I put in the money, it told me to put on the seat belt. I thought that this was a little strange but assumed that the game rumbled around. The  game only had a trigger handle with a few buttons. The screen looked like Beachhead 2000 (If you've seen this game) Basic premise of the game was that you were in a gun turrent firing at planes. So the game started and I was very suprised. The game (with you included) rotated 360 degrees. As you rotated, the  game rotated with you on the screen. And when I say rotated, I mean, it was as fast as any tilt-a-whirl that I have ever been on. It was also very responsive with changing directions. So I actually spent most of the time spinning around not really interested in playing it. Next time I go back I will be more concerned with the game itself. But because of all the spinning and the couple of beers that I had in me. I was done after the first time.

I've gone into the local arcades & asked them where they get their cabinets and they start looking at me like I'm a psychopath... Then they tell me they get the cabinets at Home Depot... ??? ...
Even when I try to clear it up (that I'm talking about Arcade cabinets) they just refuse to take me seriously.

I finally found a local arcade that has a warehouse full of cabinets...
But I've got to wait until he hollows one out before I can get my grubby hands on it.
(Which just happens to be the next phase in my own project... gotta wait... gotta wait...)

That game you were playing was Gun Tower, and is pretty fun. Speaking of big-thrill games... has anyone played the horrible 8-person sit down shooter Galaxian-3? It's horrible. If my position isn't yet clear, it's horrible. Don't waste your money. Oh, and it's horrible.

OMG...I do that all the time.  I rarely play games when I go to an arcade.  Mostly just look the cabinets over, especially the classics.

The problem where I live (D.C. metro and N. Va) is that the area was dead in the 70's and early 80's as far as business and housing are concerned. So during the arcade golden age there were not that many arcades and routes out here. Then the masssive growth hit in the late 80's and 90s and D.C. became a business center as well as government center. Then all the tech and medical companies showed up as well. Now you have a huge sprawling population but no real reserve of classic games.

Oh, and the local government tried to keep out growth and commuters by refusing to build roads so we all get to sit in traffic anyway.

When I wanted measurements for my cab, i went in the arcade here with my friends and had to wait for some kids to get off it (10 mins wait). Then me and my mate frantically started measuring the cab and cp. The guys who were playing the game looked at us weird  ::) but we managed to get it all done.

I went to france this week for a day, and went in an arcade looking for ideas - but it was mostly those mini neo geo cabs.. and other car/shooting games.
