80s movies - stand up or not?
« on: August 24, 2009, 12:17:41 pm »

Just watched Teen Wolf and Teen Wolf Too over the weekend.  Gotta say these don't stand up worth a damn.

Saw Better Off Dead recently and that, while a better movie, didn't stand up too well unless you had nostalgia for it.

The end of Teen Wolf, when they roll the credits and you see the girl (?) walking down the bleachers with the pants open, makes it worth watching.   :laugh2:

Teen Wolf 2, nope.

Can't say I remember noticing either and I don't have the movies on hand anymore to check.

Not sure what PBJ is talking about but the Teen Wolf scene is pretty well known.  I'm surprised that Chad doesn't know about it.

Depends on the movies:

80s movies that hold up

Wrath of Khan -> Definitely stands up and still the best Trek movie imo
Aliens -> Sigourney Weaver is the best action chick of all time...best of the Alien movies
Conan the Barbarian -> One of the best fantasy movies of all time
Fast Time at Ridgemont High -> Still a classic comedy
Blade Runner -> One of Grandpappy Harrison's best
Princess Bride -> Still one of the wittiest pieces of written dialogue ever
Stand by Me -> great coming of age film
Risky Business
E.T
Top Gun
Popeye (underrated classic imo that is better now than then)
War Games (Would you like to play a game of Chess?)...go go 300 baud modems!
Bill and Ted's EA

Terribad

Dirty Dancing -> Gouge my eyes out please
6 Pack -> Stick to singing Kenny
Gremlins
Ghostbusters
Flashdance
Karate Kid
Footloose

Dung Heap of time

Desperately Seeking Susan
Doctor Detroit

I could go on and on but that is just a small sampling...

No doubt. I put both in my 'still good' category. Karate Kid also holds up extremely well. Footloose is a guilty pleasure, so I'll leave it in terribad.  ;D

I think you might be thinking about the Gremlins and Ghostbusters sequels....really bad in both cases.

Lol...my opinion...tried watching both  movies in the late 90s and unless things have changed in the intervening time...I stand by my assessment.  I may be letting my Dan Akroyd bitterness overwhelm me but can you guys point out a few classic Ghostbuster's/Gremlins moments that I am neglecting?

Gremlins (I may be thinking the sequel) I have watched twice and will watch again just to see how it views now that im 37 and not 27...but Ghostbusters I just can't...

Stay Puffed Marshmallow man?!?!
Venkman's ESP testing at the beginning? (That scene really set the entertaining mood of the whole movie)

As for Gremlins, I don't think you can be helped if you thought it sucked.

Long story short, we were all brainwashed to think the 80's sucked during the 90's. Now we can appreciate just how awesome alot of the stuff was back then. You owe it to yourself to watch those movies again....just skip the sequels.

Opening credits to ending credits. Both movies are excellent all the way through, and I have recently rewatched both.

Agreed.  Gremlins is on my Christmas movie list.  Try to watch it every season.  The sequels do blow.

Yeah, yeah.  Keep in mind the target audience is 8-10 years old.  And they wanted it specifically after we did the first one.

I'm an Army of Darkness man myself!

Although Airplane is from the 70's, its still in my Top 20.

None of the comedy spoof movies of today hold a candle to The Naked Gun trilogy. Although 1 is better than 2 & 3 but they are still better than any Scary Movie title.

Vacation & Christmas Vacation are both great! ("Wholly &^%$#, Where's The Tylenol?")

Just my 2 cents, and you probably want change back!

Army of Darkness was 1992.

Evil dead was a series that started in the 80's, so I consider AoD an 80's flick in the same light as the first one.
Besides, who would ever call AoD a 90's flick, regardless of what year it was made. It is practically a direct product of the 80's.
So a big POOP to you!

An American "soviets are bad" propaganda movie with Clint... You need to be a member of foxnews to like shite like that... That reminds me, what was that movie that was just as bad but took place in South Korea, where a bunch of kids had to break into North Korea to save their dads...

Damn, now I need to go back and watch it to see what you're talking about.  I remember general details but not specifics....

And speaking of Porky's, I think it stands the test of time.  The fact that it wasn't set in the 80's contributes to that, but it's still pretty funny.

Baby climbs out the highrise window and is toddling along the ledge outside.  It looks like he's about to fall off when a ghost flies in, puts him in a stroller, and flies away.

I watched Porky's and Porky's II a couple months ago.  First one is still good.  The scene where the couple are having sex above the gym during class, the woman is screaming to a huge gym echo, the kids are having trouble with their basketball drill and the coaches are wetting their pants laughing... that will always be a huge win.

Porky's II doesn't stand up if it ever was any good.

That sounds familiar.

What about these two? I doubt they would be considered classics but they were better than ok.

Last American Virgin

I saw this movie for the first time around 2001 or so. Being a HUGE Better Off Dead fan, this movie blew my freaking mind! Honestly, I never though monique was all that hot in BOD, but this movie change that in a huge way. I don't think it was all that great of a movie though - was kind of a downer.

Not sure what PBJ is talking about but the Teen Wolf scene is pretty well known.  I'm surprised that Chad doesn't know about it.

I gotta say

Ferris Bueller's Day off, as much as I love this movie, there are a couple of cringe worthy moments in it

Esp the whole art gallery scene, I know its about Cameron and his conflicts with his parents, but still, It bothers me, its still a classic, I tried to watch the whole movie on Saturday and ended up turning it off at this scene...maybe im getting cantankerous in my old age lol
