Original Xbox power cord problem, please help!
« on: February 19, 2009, 05:29:50 pm »
Has anyone had any problems with the replacement power cord (sent by Microsoft in 2005) for the older model xbox? When I use my original cord, my Xbox works fine, but when I use the replacement power cord lately the circuit breaker pops immediately. In fact, when I plug the power cord into the wall without the xbox it pops. Is it supposed to pop when it's not connected to the console? I'm not sure how the new built in circuit breaker works.

I'm worried about using the old cord because I don't want a fire, but if the only thing faulty is the cord I don't want to get another xbox. Any help or advice would be appreciated!

Sounds like the replacement cord (PS) has a short in it if it pops the breaker without the xbox plugged in.

This happened to my replacement cord about a year ago. I just got a ps2/xbox cord  from gamestop (don't look any different then the original). I'd say use the one you have. If anything unplug it when not in use. I have mine plugged into a surge protector and hit the switch when not using it .

Thanks, I really appreciate the info!  :)

I thought it might be the replacement cord since it was popping without being plugged into the Xbox.  I'm so glad that I never bought a 360.  It's a shame that Microsoft can't seem to make a decent piece of hardware.  I've been so tempted to buy one for Pacman Championship edition and the new Galaga...

And now for a little lesson on the reason behind the replacement XBOX power cords...

Basically, there have been a few suppliers of the power supply that runs the XBOX.  One of them was produced by Foxlink, poorly.  You see, as in the picture below, the jack for the power cord is attached only to the main PCB by solder.  To the left and right of the pins that are soldered to the PCB are holes in which all the other manufacturers of power supply used to secure the jack to the PCB.  The problem that is created is when you plug and unplug the power cord a number of times the solder joints can crack and cause arcing (sparks) which can lead to fire.

Now that you're informed, you've got some decisions to make.  As I see it you've got a few options.

A) Open your XBOX, take a look at the power supply.  It might not be a Foxlink in which case you don't need the "special" cord
B) Open your XBOX, replace the power supply with a non-Foxlink power supply
C) Open your Xbox, reinforce the power jack with epoxy or something similar
D) Don't open your XBOX, replace the cord with another of the ones distributed by M$ to "fix" the Foxlink fire epidemic
E) Don't open your XBOX, use a normal (non GFCI) cord but don't plug/unplug or generally mess with the cord

There may be some other options I haven't thought of, IDK...

Personally, I'd stick with A/B or D.  Really, the GFCI M$ sent out is a BandAid for a broken bone.  The risk of fire is reduced but is still higher than replacing the root of the problem, the power supply.

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Wow, thanks for the info!  I just unplug it now after playing (from the power adapter).

I can't believe how irresponsible Microsoft has been.  :censored:
